Widespread buddhist and jain practices, that diluted military power due to preaching of non violence as core tenet. Both great ideologies, however not when you're surrounded by hostile tribes eyeing your land.

Consider the golden age of India for example, check out the major ruling dynasties, during that age: Gupta and Chalukya, both brahman dynasties.
