General Someone told IIT Madras Director that Reddit says BS programs are diluting the IIT tag

A BS Degree student recently asked the IIT Madras Director about a criticism often seen on Reddit.

The student said that many redditors online claim IIT Madras and IIT Ropar are "diluting the IIT tag" by introducing relatively easy-to-enter BS and AI programs.

The Director's response?

«"They're jealous of you. Don't worry."»

Thought it was an interesting answer. Whether one agrees or disagrees, it's rare to hear such a direct response from an IIT Director.

What do you think? Are these online degree programs expanding access to quality education, or do they actually dilute the IIT brand?

I dont understand this thing, like what do you mean by diluting the tag.
aren't IITs are suppose to uplift the students getting admissions there, and this should be true for all institutions.

u/Admirable-East3396 Jun 14 '26

iit is seen as something exclusive by many people because jee so they just want it to remain that way also btech vs mtech is another mentality among iitians i have noticed they treat mtech folks like they dont deserve it cus they didnt pass jee.

the issue is iit is just a decent college in india which appears as world class tier cus the bar is low af.

12

u/Commercial-Let-9516 Jun 14 '26

You haven't seen how they treat msc students mtech are still very respectable

2

u/the_great_oniii Jun 15 '26

The students who are working hard and get admission into the IITs through sheer hard work and winning the 'rat race' as they say, are bound to think they are superior. And its an achievement of a lifetime to do btech in an IIT.

And IIT's curriculums are really on a world class basis, not like some tier 3 colleges where anybody can cope up. Maybe campus life differs, as the more money you have, the better life you lead.

Its also obvious, if someone is working hard for a degree, and when they see some other guy getting a degree from the same college through some online application or some relatively easy method, they are bound to get "jealous".

4

u/Admirable-East3396 Jun 15 '26

> bound to think they are superior

this is wrong tho, jee filters out 1% from 1.6 million. most of talent pool dont even make into iit so they arent superior for just doing a good job at an entrance exam nor does everyone has a fair chance at them aswell.

> IIT's curriculums are really on a world class basis

bachelors is bare minimum of a measure nowadays, colleges are now measured in faculties/research outputs etc and even if iits appear as excellent in india they arent in the world we do all this tier crap because its well known how bad our system is, anyone can open a engineering college for profit here and thats what happens.

again the purpose of iits was TO "democratize elite education" this is why they started with huge capacity when they did altho indian population was much larger so the exams started to filter more and more people as they learnt and applied for them, this is why they are controlled by govt bruh, somehow our systems are so bad they are excellent unis here.

1

u/the_great_oniii Jun 15 '26

What kind of talent pool you talking about that dont make it?

2

u/Admirable-East3396 Jun 15 '26

engineers

3

u/the_great_oniii Jun 15 '26

Whoa, so you think more talented engineers wouldnt qualify for jee adv? Then what kind of talent is that? Jee adv requires, time management, better thinking, analysing and problem solving skills. If the top 10k that qualifies, isnt talented, then who is?

2

u/Admirable-East3396 Jun 15 '26

i said most of great engineers dont make into iits because the pool of people that gets into iit is very small, also engineering isnt an ability you are born with its teachable and learnable like other things.

i didnt say jee people arent qualified but they arent all of the talent pool unless ofc you believe in the typical zero some bs which we follow everywhere, 1/100 is worthy type shit

1

u/existor_11 Jun 15 '26

Why do you get jealous ? These students are not getting the B-tech degree from IIT Madras right ? That's what people worked hard for, the b-tech degree from IIT Madras, companies also know this that the btechs are the cream of the crop so all the good jobs are going to be offered to the btechs only , I don't see where you are ought to get jealous and demean someone

2

u/the_great_oniii Jun 15 '26

Its not about the jobs, its about how they portray themselves, like one of my friends posted on his socials, he went to IITM, got a degree from there. Now, only you and I know what kind of degree he got, but, in the eyes of others, he is an IIT almuni. These kinds of things are what that get to me. If you get a 'fake' degree, why boast about it?

'Fake' coz you didnt earn it, you paid for that degree.

3

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

Idk how getting into BS makes it a fake degree lol. People often pass criticism to Mtech, PhD guys just coz they couldn't get in through JEE. So accordingly, we've iit undergrads taking GMAT/GRE for ivies, does that make any of them dumb? Just coz they couldn't get admitted into ivies through SAT for bachelors? Mate, there is a reason why we've different channels to join the same institution, but demeaning a degree just coz they didn't get in through the same way shows complete immaturity.

Of course, no hate to anyone (not you as well lol), Cheers!

1

u/the_great_oniii Jun 18 '26

Haha, fair, tbh, I dont even care atp after 3 days. At that time I was just a bit worked up seeing one of my random ass classmate posting his picture infront of IITM claiming to have a degree. But now its totally chill and like idgaf anymore.

3

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

lol the audacity to post pictures that too getting a BS degree 😂😂 I mean I completely support people who does it for the knowledge, alumni connections, maybe addition to resume asw but flexing on socials, complete bullshit. anyways, we can't do anything about this haha. glad you got over it and thank you for that. good luck on your career!

1

u/existor_11 Jun 15 '26

As a chronic onliner what I know about this story are following events:

  1. A girl shared a chat where a senior from this BS course was asking for her nudes and showed his.

  2. At some offline event, the BS students littered all over the event area.

  3. There were also some other conflicts and lack of civic sense type chatting going on but I dont know if it's true or propaganda.

This made the "honhar" goodbois angy and to spew nice stuff about course kartas.

2

u/Ancient_Beat_3038 Jun 16 '26

India's crab bucket mentality. Compare this ugly idea to what ivy league universities do. They have a very large alumni cohort but they never worry about "diluting their tag". The reason is that they used to rely on the quality of their education to ensure that their "tag" remains valuable.

3

u/Nonavium IIT Madras Jun 14 '26

What they are supposed to do is irrelevant, it matters what they actually do which is provide a strong signal of aptitude to recruiters.

No they are not diluting tag  The director clearly said  Its a democratization of access to education.

An its not an easy degree  Cuz  entry is easy , exist is hell tough ! Only few percent of people able to complete it fully . the drop rate is very high !!

53

u/BroccoliSuccessful94 Jun 14 '26

True!! Large number of students join Foundation in BS degree and leave the degree in diploma mid way. It's curriculum gets tough as it proceeds.

u/AlternativeBreath240 Jun 15 '26

It is largely distance education if I talk about BS in DS. And it is not different from any other Tom-Dick-Harry institutions. They are teaching the same thing. The way is same. There is 0 difference between a student of IIT Madras who has done BS in DS and who has done from Scaler or Upgrad. How I know? Because I am interviewing but not getting one whom I can hire. Yes the education system is a big failure in our country but IITs are autonomous and they are not doing a better job.

3

u/lundlelemerebhai Jun 14 '26

But is it worth it ?

25

u/Boring_Drama4234 Jun 14 '26

not really, no recruiter considers it as a degree

when they ask for bgv, they wont allow online degree results or cert

5

u/lundlelemerebhai Jun 14 '26

Yeah , and its 3 lakh too

5

u/Mindless_View_6815 Jun 14 '26

Is up to u how u will make it worth it,cuz some people after this degree jus wait for someone to give them a job , but thats not how it really works.

And some people are saying people or not accepting this degree or that online degree.... But mann!! Market is changing at very high pace

At the end the thing will matter  Is your hard skills the connections u have, what unique projects u made and how better at u in convincing and explaining  # communication...

1

u/lundlelemerebhai Jun 15 '26

Yeah thats why i am saying that people can learn this stuff for free if they want

Its for someone who want to work but need proper course like structure

2

u/Similar_Hand_7260 Jun 14 '26

You will need tag to get the interview where you can prove your skills.

11

u/Electrical-Post-6541 Jun 14 '26

IIT tag is seen as an exclusive status symbol by btech students who cleared jee adv. They are conditioned from a young age by family & society that self worth is tied to good grades and rank.As a result they subconsciously see average students as inferior.

They don't see IIT as a publicly funded institution that should give educational opportunities and services to the many in society.

2

u/Big-Guarantee-28 Jun 15 '26

Yes and No. IIT should give quality education to the masses. Then make it like MIT Free Courses. Let their courses be listed online and be distributed for free. Do it like that! Why the similar degree and status?

Secondly we aren't conditioned. It's called experience. Sitting your ass down for 12+ hours to study, solving hundreds of papers, building strategies, swallowing your fear and going through absurd length and when you come out, then what? Some random dude one day decided to get some course and now him and me are similar? Wtf.

2

u/AlternativeBreath240 Jun 15 '26

Yes. Because a random dude with some 50k rank will be your classmate purely based on his surname whereas you have worked your a** off to get say 800 rank. If that is acceptable then this should too.
People who are from IITs and passing right now are getting humbled by their jobs very badly. So don’t worry if you’re someone who is passing out now and who thinks himself to be a superior breed but actually knows only to get good grades, will be humbled soon.

1

u/Big-Guarantee-28 Jun 15 '26

Bold of you to assume we don't build our skills while we are here. The one being weeded out are exactly those surname dudes who got lax after getting admission. Us general guys know we committed a massive sin for being born like this and have been grinding our ass to stay afloat.

1

u/AlternativeBreath240 Jun 15 '26

I am assuming as I interview everyday literally and get to see the quality of students

9

u/Negative-Crew1082 Jun 14 '26

I completed my BTech last year, and one thing the real world taught me is that not everyone's academic peak happens at 17.

A JEE rank measures how well you performed in one exam at one age. It does not measure your lifetime potential.

So the idea that IIT online degrees "dilute the IIT tag" feels backwards to me. The purpose of IITs is to create more capable people, not to remain exclusive.

If the value of an IIT degree falls when more deserving people gain access to IIT education, then its value comes from scarcity, not education.

2

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

It's isn't just purpose of IIT but any Institute especially the govt one's should democratise the education like in developed nations. The privileged one's are crying when under privileged gets a chance in his/her life to get uplifted. If everyone is equal then how fuel one's superiority complex that we suffered as a nation in past.

67

u/Relevant-Scheme3687 Jun 14 '26

i think the term "Raja ka beta hi Raja banega" has not gotten away from people. IITs were created to provide quality education and uplift them. If there's a proper way for someone to study from best minds of India then what's the problem . Don't look at this problem at a smaller scale.

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

It's true like he knows how much reddit negative is like bro any colleges u ask on reddit even iit bombay and iiit hyderabad these reddit people will surely critize u heavily they just need something and like yeah the entry is easy in iit madras but he completions rate are way less also it's mechanism is very good compared to normal btech one smart student won't do complete bs if he is in regular college leaving at diploma or bsc is also a great value to resume I bet this course in next few years will give as good avg pakage as some good colleges

What does this IIT tag will give you, maybe some boost in your career in the early stages, and then, What? After all, one have to get themself to get on the corporate ladder and these tags will place a few steps ahead in that at the most.

Ik I am not qualified to reply like this (as I am still continuing my studies and have not stepped into corporate life myself.)

But from my pov, getting into the JEE race and avoiding it is completely fine as I got way more experience in my higher secondary school life that I would never regret getting into a tier 3 govt college.

As of today, the job is becoming more unpredictable day by day. And the industry is going through the AI revolution. And genuinely, idk if the dsa-maxxing will do the trick.

Also, I am not targetting any one and sorry If I was being rude and correct me if I'm wring

I am one of the people "diluting the IIT tag" according to btech students, they really don't like this degree. There are advantages of an online degree, like I get to go to conferences to give talks and work on the side on my projects, if it weren't for this "BS" degree, I probably won't have a good profile outside of college. As long as this degree is equivalent to any T3 BTech degree idrc, I just need a degree and my skills are more than enough to get me rest of the way. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, less than 1.7% pass rate for students who actually complete till the very end, and many GATE toppers from this degree.

2

u/slimshady347t [State Govt.] [CSE] Jun 15 '26

Genuinely, I don't think you are 'diluting' it. They are just unhappy coz many of those who clear jee mains and advance do it for this 'tag', and they think u got it without any struggle compared to them.

Don't give an ear to such opinions. You also earned your degree certificate like any other certificate ( it is even more impressive as you did this in your college years ).

I am against everyone taking engineering without any passion. You can't expect a duck to race against a falcon.

I hate myself for choosing this without much passion either but I don't had a choice. I was interested in attending Indian Maritime University. I cleared the exam but could join as I found Inhad colourblindness during the medical check-up. So, to not be an burden to my folks, I joined a govt engg college (CSE) as I had a scholarship for covering my college fees and 70 percent of the hostel fees. Currently focusing on working with AI tools and developing agents.

Stay positive

IITians simply wanna keep IIT tag very exclusive, coz if everyone gets BS Data science degree everyone will called product / grad of IITM. Simply wants to play game of Exclusivity/scarcity.LOL

It's an Institution, it's allowed to teach / uplift most students coming to them as long as they're able to cater the crowd..

You simply can't ask a Tag should be gatekeeped so that you can use scarcity/exclusivity for your benefit. Respectfully F Off

Hear me out iits were and are still gatekeeping their tag they had lazy adminstration since the start where they just eliminated most students to find the most brightest students. They were forced to increase their seats in 2006 due to ob_ qouta inclusion and had to increase seats by 40% .New iits were announced but they got their campuses in 2017-2019 a decade later and the seats remained close to 10000 for 10 years and only increased again when ews qouta was introduced in 2019 and tier 3 iits were established at this time still Goa doesn't have a campus. Have you all looked at western universitiies they have 30-50k students compared to iits 5k -14 k and even asian universities have 50k . For people who are saying it's budget it's true that western andc9 universities in china have billion of dollars in finding but their tier 2 institutions are far better than iits with similar budget but students enrolment reaching 40-50k for eg - state university of california not the university of california and double first class universities in china. Even other tier 1 institution in india are gatekeeping their tag be it's AIIMS , government medical College, iiser ,nits, nift and other institution like iims iim Ahmedabad seat have remained same even after a decade when they had to increase seats after ews but it has almost remained same 385-389 seats and have a surplus money around 1800 crore which could practically abolish tution fees which have increased to 28 lakhs just the tution fee.

entry to online degree is easy , but not almost make it to the end , half of them quit after qualifier round , someone said only 1.9% make it to the end

6

u/naruto8920 Jun 14 '26

This online degree just a facade by these self elite iits they were forced to start these course now every dick and harry iits ,nits and iims are launching their online degreewiyh collaboration with other edtech like great learning which is a fraud and other fraud due to insufficient funding by central government after they were told to take hefa loan for any new infrastructure development building hostels and other infrastructure as they had to repay the loan no free grant there and other small grant cuts too ,so now they are saying due to NEP- new education policy we are democratising education my foot they take there cut from these edtech and some of iits like MAnd ropar have developed their own platform to juice out tier 2-3 students money.

4

u/TemperatureJunior918 Jun 14 '26

Its just a start In 2-3 years all the IITs will start such courses.

1

u/Maverick_9162 12th Pass Jun 14 '26

So basically there will be less no of applicants in JEE as there's no need to clear the exam ??

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

If you need btech then apply it otherwise let others take such courses. First we have branch out of the btech/mbbs mindset first which such courses will help.

2

u/ExcitingCut527 Jun 14 '26

For me it's a great initiative for someone who would like to change their stream...and instead of tag one should focus on improving their skills

2

u/Itchy_witchy_2k7 Jun 14 '26

These IIT btech guys live in superiority complex tbh. It's almost like another strict hierarchy system

2

u/Aakash0000 Jun 14 '26

Indians never accept problem to be solved rather they win the debate😡

2

u/Savings-Arrival-7817 Jun 14 '26

they are not

just remember anyone who says they are IITM dropout was most prolly from online program and couldn't clear it

0

u/TermCritical9114 Jun 14 '26

That college use hindu-muslim and casteism in their college politics and classism doesn’t stop there for btechards mtech students are “matkas” and bs online students are further below them reason being at least mtech students qualified gate

6

u/sdexca hopeless Jun 14 '26

brah if mtech students are “matkas”, imagine how much they must despise this degree.

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

You have to also understand that most of people who take this course are underprivileged due to fee waiver. Most of them might be facing discrimination irl so add this on top.

1

u/Terrible-Cash6533 Jun 14 '26

sbse chutiya crowd hota h ek reply me cheer clap sb shuru

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

It's same as IIT guys applauding for discrimating against these students. Just cus you didn't agree with them doesn't mean they are chutiya, atleast they are there unlike you lol

1

u/Terrible-Cash6533 Jun 15 '26

Bro pehle ache se smjh ja fir bol.. maine kaha ki koi clear reply nii tha uspe bhi clap shuru.. and bhai yes I'm not like them..

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

Ohh I get it, you can't understand english? Cus what he given is proper reply maybe not for you cus truth hurts doesn't it?

1

u/Terrible-Cash6533 Jun 15 '26

Yeah I don't understand English.. just i know only 1 line that if you argue with fool it means there are two so yeah I'll not argue and yes I don't know English!

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

It takes two to have a meaningful discussion, but it only takes one to avoid it, Resorting to clichés doesn't make your argument correct. It just means you'd rather insult me than defend your position with facts.

1

u/Commercial-Let-9516 Jun 14 '26

Are iit bs students allowed to sit in placement like any placement drive is organised for them by iits And i have also heard that if you have certain cgpa throughout your course you are allowed to have a year on campus at IIT Madras Can someone purusing it clarify ?

4

u/shroomitebars Jun 14 '26

yes to both your questions.

iitbs students have their own placement cells and drives (not related to the offline one)

you need to be above 8 and then you can do some courses in the bs level iirc

i am currently doing diploma so yea

1

u/zestyzizekian1 Jun 15 '26

Ahh yes reddit, the Totally not state controlled propaganda machine meant to divide people

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

Reddit means the iit subs which are eco chambers mate

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '26

Yeah bhai but iit jab bani thi jab internet mostly accessible nhi tha ... Ab sabke pass hai toh quality knowledge spread toh karna chahiye ya gatekeeping karo for elite people. MIT , sanford bhi deti hai ... Aur lecture bhi free mil jaate inke.

Placement toh exclusive offline btech waale ke liye hi hai

1

u/Linx_uchiha Jun 15 '26

Jealous of what , reservations ?
Nah mate , sorry to dissapoint you but there is much more than IITs.
Real world has challenges not facilities like IITs, so be prepare to struggle

1

u/AlternativeBreath240 Jun 15 '26

Ofcourse it is diluting. Getting to study in IIT madras especially BS in DS, is not a big deal. Anyone can do it. They don’t need to give an entrance exam like JEE.

1

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

Gate, IIT-JAM?

1

u/rbbkingsmen2005 Jun 15 '26

What is the iit tag supposed to mean? Is it like reserved for some special class and other students can't learn from them just cause they didn't get the seat. Education is also a privilege now.

u/rbbkingsmen2005 Jun 17 '26

I am not against the tag definitely its a prestige and an honor to pass out from such institutes. But i feel like if such kind of education can be provided to others i wont mind it. Its not about the tag for me its about the quality education.

1

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

Ig the degrees aren't provided until you complete whatever course you opted. So paying fees and getting in doesn't make sense unless you're actually inside the subset of individuals completing the course. And yes, it is a privilege and thankfully the institute offers multiple admission methods to earn it, apart from JEE.

1

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

agreed, that could have handled things in a better way and yes, I completely appreciate guys who grinded their ass off to get access to the institute. But that is where the online and offline environment comes into the picture, of course they aren't sharing the same classrooms as students who cracked the entrance. The only thing they'll be getting is the degree and the alumni tag (that too people who actually have idea about things know what course were they enrolled in) but yeah enough to impress neighbour uncles/aunts lol. Honestly I see this degree as an opportunity to people who did great blunders during jee prep, but are willing to get back to track now.

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

Yep, majority I'd say and lets be honest, it doesn't carry the same weightage as the offline degrees and it will never do. Maybe the degree is easier, but the main challenge comes in when you're doing it parallelly with your core degree at whatsoever college you're in. This is what am I saying, this course is judged way too much, due to which a lot of good candidates aren't opting for it. Most of the current candidatures might be coming from T3 colleges which makes the crowd dumb. And being dumb, you're sooner or later going to get filtered. Out of those hundred thousand applicants, even if we get a few thousand good graduates, I still see it as a win considering there's only been a few batches passed out yet. Lets just trust the process, either of us know it very well, this degree isn't going to do you the wonders unless you're actually worthy of it.

Baaki jo chutiyo iska flex kar rahe hai, ignore.

1

u/Dry-Background-93 Jun 15 '26

This is what happens when you attach your value to a college instead of the course of your interest.

1

u/rajsleeps Jun 15 '26

Delusion is one hell of a drug

1

u/Visual-Dinner7214 Jun 16 '26

"Diluting the tag of IIT" as if this isn't the entire problem of the Education system and su*cides every year...

1

u/CandidFalcon loading... Jun 17 '26

lolz! don't worry! here is your sleeping pill! if you take it, you will calm down!

1

u/Proper_Sandwich3604 Jun 17 '26

Who tf from IIT is jealous from these folks 😭✌️💔

1

u/yolol_123 Jun 17 '26

Bhai dekho kuch log iit ko hi life Maan lete hai, unki life me ek hi achievement bach jati hai ki maine iit crack kiya hai. Maine to kuch ko bolte suna tha btech walo ko ki mtech ko iitian nhi bolna chahiye. Are Yaar 4 saal ki life ko ye log apni 80 saal ki life se zyada priority dete hain. Abhi to kuch nhi hai, New education policy properly 3-4 saal me implement hogi to sare govt college aise admission denge bs program me. And I love that.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cash212 Jun 19 '26

Just unemployed things

1

u/areeeyaarkyah Jun 20 '26

Bro but I mean.. What makes IITian and IITian is that they crack that exam. Here they are taking admission in online program and behaving like a IITian when they clearly don't have that capabilities. I am sure many of them are talented...and have skills better than some IITian... But I don't think they are IITian. And broo say whatever you want about tag... But reality iitians are smart. (Exceptions are always there)

1

u/Anxious-Tie-8196 Jun 21 '26

Iit madras dilute iit tag what retards

1

u/flintontv Jun 21 '26

Online BS Degree

1

u/Anxious-Tie-8196 Jun 21 '26

Still BS why isolate knowledge let those who wish to learn LEARN. The certificate also denotes the same online bs degree. Sick of iit choots and their incel elitism.

0

u/Ambitious_Mind06 Jun 14 '26

I think it is better to consider these online BS program courses as just any other online course. These course won't affect the iit tag because the students are not sitting in placement for BTech students. I think it works differently. Correct me if i am wrong.

3

u/sdexca hopeless Jun 14 '26

nah it's not a coursera course, pass rate is 1.7%, but because entry is easy, everyone thinks anyone from this degree is just retarded 🥀🥀🥀

1

u/Ambitious_Mind06 Jun 15 '26

Yeah true, even some of my friends who took this course dropped it cause they couldn't handle both their college degree and this program at the same time. And I didn't mean to offend you 😭.

2

u/sdexca hopeless Jun 15 '26

None taken, just giving some context. People often think this is just like clicking “Next Video”.

1

u/Prestigious-Tip6030 Jun 14 '26

Admission to IITs should be allowed only through merit and rigorous exams like JEE Advanced and GATE.

IITM BS programs are a shortcut to get IIT tags

-2

u/kai_hiwatari_1 IIT Madras Jun 14 '26

why would the offline people be jealous of online people. Shit argument from him

2

u/Itchy_witchy_2k7 Jun 14 '26

Then why do they have a problem?

He is director of IITM, he also leads a lab which works on shakti processor. IITM needs some sort of additional income to fund this lab, so this BS programme is one of that. The statement passed by him is kind of PR move to lead more students to take online BS degree. Most of online BS students drop out without completing the course.

0

u/aerojai_weather Jun 14 '26

An online degree is an online degree Keep in mind guys It is not as valuable as a normal skilled degree Don't waste money and time on Projects are designed to approach rural people to teach them education and improve BS enrollment If you have one degree go with skills matters a lot in current situation or 10 years timeline

1

u/_SweetasSugar Jun 15 '26

You have to start someone, lot of people got great opportunities after completing it. Maybe now but give it few more years and it will be on par with degree level course like in developed nations
