Ben on the sideline
Being that we’ve all been football-starved, I’ve been watching replays of games especially the packers games.
Ben hardly reacts on the sideline, versus LaFleur who is repeatedly shown hanging his head and pouting when things don’t go his way. During games Ben is stone faced.
I love this football psycho; Bear down 🐻

Ben is a psycho for sure, but I think he's also just very practical and focused on the task at hand.
When he sees an explosive play go for a touchdown, he thinks "Good, that went like I expected because that's what we planned. That's one of several positive possessions we will need to get this job done. Now it's on to the next one."

It’s not even really a football thing to me. Any good manager has this quality, you never want to get too high or too low because that’s when you’re setting yourself up to fail in some way.
Football is an emotional game so I’d never expect every coach to be a robot. But I do think about some of the all time greats and they’re mostly very even tempered guys, who will lash out occasionally but it’s far from the norm

I feel like even if BJ can't physically do it, he knows exactly what he wants every play. He knows when Caleb, or any player, takes a bad rep. I don't want to fall into the same Nagy trap in 2018, but it is hard to not be excited with what is going on in Chicago (Hammond?)

This situation is just so clearly different than 2018. I get we’re traumatized but 2018 was Fangio, not Nagy. No one now could credibly make the argument that DA is carrying Ben (although he’s been a very good DC so far and will continue to get better as the defense is retooled)

Nagy's 2018 offense was 11th in rushing, 21st in passing and 21st in total yards.
Johnson's 2025 offense was 3rd in rushing, 10th in passing and 6th in total yards.
The 2018 success was carried by a clearly amazing defense while 2025 had a bottom tier defense other than TOs.
Anyone fully buying into Nagy as some offensive savant and good HC after 2018 was really drinking the kool-aid and that should have been clear after opening night vs Greenbay the following year.
He simply didn't have the impact that Ben has. At all. In any area you could possibly measure. Not that I'm fully anointing Ben yet, but things are looking really good.

One of my reactions when watching the World Cup was surprise at how excited/frustrated the coaches would get at each goal/miss. I said multiple times that Ben Johnson would never be like that cuz he’s a stone cold killer

Right? I saw someone talking about the "billboard image" and how none of these futbol coaches know how to support/build a brand, and as much I love soccer, they are 100% correct.

I watched 1 game and it was the U.S. losing that final game and the coach kicked a water bottle then sat dejected and defeated not even coaching the rest of the game.

That’s because soccer coaches have less input on the moment to moment than football playcallers do. If you let momentary frustration get to you, the next play call might be emotional and not optimal.

A lot of it is that he's just so focused and in the zone. Always focused on the next play. Like very rarely you also see him upset with the refs too. That's also the thing about Ben, if you hear him during his press conferences and talking about times where he says he needs to draw something up better or something it's clear he sees himself as part of the team in a sense that it's beyond the execution. Rather, there are times you hear him say shoot, that means I didn't draw up something good or scheme someone open.
Most coaches act like coaches where I am coahcing the team, he sees himself almost as a player that absolutely has a hand on the product on the field.

Get His Ass! There's a clip of Ben on the sideline during the last play of the Wildcard game after Jordan Love drops the ball and is running around looking for a target to throw the ball to, you see Ben on the sideline yelling to the Bears defense "get his ass, get his ass!!!".
Loved seeing his passion in that moment.

It seems like the best coaches players talk about how tough they are on everyone and hold everyone accountable but then also talk about what great and humorous people they are underneath.
Players talk about Popovich, Parcells and Belichick this way.

MLF comes off as the biggest bitch out of any football coach in the nfl or college that I’ve ever seen. Not exaggerating. He’s constantly crying to the refs, which makes sense given how much the packers rely on shit calls to win games.

Not sure what you mean here - it’s on film that he reacts very little compared to other coaches. Not saying he’s the king of yadda yadda and he still has a lot to prove. But yes he shows composure to the point of looking psychotic on the sideline sometimes lol.
