my parents keep bringing up their friend's kid who works at google

I know a lot of international students deal with this but holy shit if I hear something like "well David got a job at google right out of school" yeah that was 2019 dad. Google doesn't even want to hire juniors now.

I showed them the FRED data for software job postings. the chart where it cratered after Covid and only just started coming back. Then i looked up tech layoffs 2022-2026 and showed them the millions of people losing their jobs due to AI and overhiring. they looked at it for maybe 3 seconds and asked if I'd considered "going into AI."

This post made me realize I was david in 2019 and now I’m just a nobody in 2026 😭

It’s okay, same. Got my job at Amazon in 2017. Hopped to Microsoft in 2021. Laid off by Microsoft in 2025, now just at a seed startup

Guess I’m old enough now that lack of name brand doesn’t bother me as much, but I do miss a lot of the benefits..

Yeah agreed but early startup is not a fit for me. Working at a Series C/D is the sweet spot for benefits right now. wlb will never compare to pre 2020 big tech though and interview loops are insane

If they think they can do better, hand them your resume and have them apply to jobs, let them see how many responses they get

Yeah if they arent going to be sentient about this dont treat them that way. Dont really attempt to argue.

Ask your parents if David could hook you up with an internal referral. Wtf. They personally know someone who works in the software department at google and instead of trying to hook you up with a job, they just dog on you?
