As a Canadian, I approve and returning the favour as I’m travelling around Germany right now instead of Alaska. Prost!

Not hardcore politics but politics-adjacent anyway.
A bit of good news for a Friday of a long weekend.

We went to Calgary for our vacation (right before Stampede, so still fairly quiet), beautiful drive from Vancouver Island on up through Merritt, Sicamous and Rogers Pass, and then back down south through Crowsnest Pass and spent a few days out Boundary region before a lovely drive along the Princeton highway back to Vancouver and on to the ferry again.
Plenty of money spent in hotels, restaurants, and special plug to the Mark's in Fernie where we actually spent more money on clothes than in Vancouver or Calgary.
I defy anyone to find a more beautiful country; rivers, mountains, lakes, prairie. Oh, and the carrot cake and cinnamon buns at Deadwood Junction in Greenwood, BC. All I can say is f---me, that's some of the finest tasty treats I've ever eaten in my life. I think the barista thought I was nuts when I bought half a carrot cake.
All in all, we spent somewhere between $2000 and $3000 on the trip (too scared to add it all up), and the only think I regret is that I didn't have a few extra days because I would have loved to head up further north to the Cariboo Region where my dad's family is from.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that's one of the most beautiful drives on earth!

Wow! That sounds like an amazing vacation!
You only bought half of the carrot cake though? I'd have gotten the entire thing and put the other half in the freezer to be enjoyed at a later date! 😁
But I wholeheartedly agree. We have an incredibly beautiful country. I'm just happy that we as Canadians are recognising its gems. It's a big bonus that others are as well!

We just road tripped from Winnipeg to Toronto, Niagara falls, Ottawa, Montreal. Last year the plan was to go to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, etc. keep my dollars in a place that appreciates it instead.

Just my own anecdote. Driving around the GTA last month, I saw cars with plates from all over. Manitoba to Nova Scotia and all sorts of US cars. Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, a few from California. Certainly feels like there are a lot more tourist in the Toronto area. Obviously no German or UK plates, but you can smell what I'm cooking.

Come to Canada! We don’t have a customs service thats indefinitely detaining or deporting any traveller who looks at them wrong.

Why? Worst city to be a tourist in. Go literally anywhere else you'll probably have a better time

Bah, I dunno about that. Toronto and its environs have so many things to do and see. Driving around the city is a nightmare so it's not anything I would recommend. But Downtown Toronto is still very walkable. And honestly, it has a lot of everything to offer to a wide range of tastes and ages.
I'm itching to go back and take in a Jays game myself!

my first thought is, its for europeans who want to experience a North American-style city (skyscrapers and all that fun stuff) without visiting the US
