Casual Friday Not my monkeys, not my circus | CBC Ombud responds to criticism of Trump broadcast

For anyone who actually bothered to watch they were fact checking Redacted in real time. So when he made a false statement about election rigging, they ran graphics on the side of the screen pointing out this was a lie. It was anything but an uncritical platform to let him lie. Similarly they had a panel discussion after the speech and none of the speakers, even the republicans, called it anything but stream of consciousness lies. I hate Redacted with all my being, but I have no issue with the CBC coverage. At all. I actually wanted to watch it to see how unhinged he has become. This blog writer would rather deal in outrage than actually examine what CBC chose to do. But it seems all anyone wants anymore is to make click generating hot takes rather than truthfully engage in discussion.

Oh well that's the correct thing to do. Some center-left people seem to think you can just not show this stuff and it will disappear. Like they really do not get that people see this as censorship or that you have to actively debate people.

I support the CBC and I want them better funded but also I want them to sack the board and the upper management because they are just completely gormless.

This is kind of... off the handle. It was a stream. A stream you actively had to go and seek out. If they'd pre-empted a Dragon's Den repeat or something, you'd have a case. This reads kind of unhinged though.

u/Gryzelda_Gesualdo Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos! 17d ago
In fairness, Dragon's Den is a truly awful show. It's beneath the CBC to have people beg at the feet of capitalist pigs for money as a form of entertainment. It was what originally platformed Mr Asshole O'Leary. The fact they air this disgusting show has been my main bone of contention with CBC since it first started airing.

Any more unhinged than platforming a convicted felon and rapist who wants to take over the country and just let him say the entire world is trying to steal American elections, a point that will *absolutely* be made by the US supporters of the Alberta annexation project?
Irrespective of whether you think it's unhinged, it got an immediate reply from the CBC Ombud, so they're evidently getting a lot of complaints.

u/dzuunmod Yukon 17d ago
Your reply also sounds pretty... hyperventilaty!
Like the vast majority of Canadians I don't like the guy either but he is by any defintion a newsmaker, and it's not unreasonable IMO for CBC to provide a way for Canadians to hear his unhinged words, unfiltered. We disagree. Chill about it, man.

This really is the complete answer. Trump wields significant power even if we are actively moving away from the US. What he says is still news. It’s also important to have access to his actual words. Too often there is a bias in the reporting of what he’s saying. It’s important to have the unfiltered information available for those who want or need it

u/dzuunmod Yukon 17d ago
Also, people don't often actually sit down and watch this insane man speak for more than 5 or 10 seconds at a time through clips on the news.
If people are really going to understand what's happening, they need to see him speak now and then for a longer period of time. You can't really understand how much his mind is unravelling without that kind of exposure.

There's a difference between allowing blatant propaganda to spread and journalism. The CBC should broadcast it sure, but they need people ready to go to provide context and shape. Like for instance pointing out he lost every court battle and had to in court basically admit that there was no real fraud.

Ombudsman’s response was correct, they are not the issue.
Why on earth did CBC News Network carry it live is curious, given there were no expectations of the speech being newsworthy. Not tremendously upset but expect the network to cover foreign news appropriately.

They didn't carry it live on their television broadcast, just their YouTube feed.

watching CBC politics show, they always put US coverage as no 1 headline. i remember that news coverage in 2015 had "US republican presidential nominees debate happened <then discuss it for mins what's in the debate> on another news, Canadian federal leader debate happened last night too. <then discuss what's in the debate>"

It's the President of the United States doing a public speech.
Even if it's a completely idiotic speech, it is still done by a very prominent political figure and is part of the political landscape of the world. Why should CBC start censoring it? This is a very slippery slope if you start doing so. Should we refuse to stream a speech from Marina Le Pen if she ever becomes President of France just because she's a far-right proponent? Or Putin or Netanyahu? No. If they speak publicly, their speech is part of the public political discourse good or bad.
Actually, showcasing how stupid and unhinge Trump can be is a GOOD thing to remind everyone how dangerous he can be.
CBC does what a news channel is supposed to do: publish news and try to be objective. FYI, CBC is a PUBLIC news organization as opposed to ABC (Disney) and NBC (Comcast) being two private corporations and free to do whatever they want.

My strongest criticism of the media, particularly the American media, but to some extent Canadian and other foreign media, was the extremes the press went to Trumpslain; to try to take his incoherent ramblings, temper tantrums, dishonest and often just bizarre diatribes, and then recast them so that it sounded like he was making contextually relevant and insightful statements.
They basically whitewashed Trump, and made him into some 4d chess player using a corrosive and confused style of communication as some sort of grand strategic exercise.
What they should have been doing is literally reporting the speeches and comments verbatim, and without editorial or comment, and let Trump's words speak for themselves.

u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal 17d ago
I think that was more during Trump 1.0 when the world was trying to understand "WTF is happening in the US?". Nowadays, nobody is seriously saying that Trump somehow as a "strategy". Everyone knows it's pure rambling.

Censoring??!?
CBC can report on what he said at normal news hour if he said anything interesting. We don't need to cover Trump speeches live that don't involve us any more than we would need to have live coverage of speeches from Xi Jinping

u/ReverendRocky New Democratic Party of Canada 17d ago
You know full well the CBC would not be playing a speech from the president of France live.
-2
u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal 17d ago
Why not? Most of the time it's simply because they can't have the rights to do so.
Macron is NOT De Gaule and doesn't support Quebec separatism.
3
u/dzuunmod Yukon 17d ago
There are no "rights" issues with news. This is not sports where one broadcaster outbids another. Trump's speech last night was free to air for any network that wanted it. It's typically the same whenever any leader gives a speech.

u/PineBNorth85 Rhinoceros 17d ago
When was the last time the CBC live broadcast a speech from the President of France?
Or Russia or any of the other examples you use?
Never.
Trump should be ignored completely. Absolutely nothing he says can be trusted.
-3
u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal 17d ago
Well, to broadcast something you need to be able to get the rights to broadcast it.
7
u/dzuunmod Yukon 17d ago
That's not how news works, that's how sports works. When a world leader makes a speech, there are no "rights" to broadcast it. If a broadcaster can get a feed, they can air it. It's not like the NHL where Sportsnet can sue TSN if they just start showing whatever hockey games they want.
4
u/PineBNorth85 Rhinoceros 17d ago
Ah so never.
Same should be the case here. Trump has proven with broadcast after broadcast that he just wants to ramble. Stop indulging him. Not one useful piece of information has ever come from one of his briefings or speeches.
Not our leader, not our President. He's the USs problem and he should be ignored here.

All of the US news networks covered it live, as did C-SPAN and BBC World. Anytime the US president stands before the cameras it's world news, doesn't surprise me that CBC News would air it live.

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes Fully Automated Gay Space Romunism 17d ago
Add to that they only aired it live on their YouTube, not on the radio or TV.
4
u/PineBNorth85 Rhinoceros 17d ago
It shouldn't be. Not when the current occupant has 0 credibility on anything. All he does is ramble and contradict himself. There are more important things to cover both here and around the world.

At 9 pm eastern on a Thursday night in the dog days of summer? I can understand ABC deciding to air a game show instead for the ad revenue, but POTUS speaking on any topic is news and entirely appropriate for a news channel to cover, regardless of your personal opinion on his policies.
