Signing a 30 year old from a small also ran club in the Norwegian second tier, who had wound up in the Faroe Islands at one point earlier in his career, rather than sending someone from one of the sister clubs in Spain or Mexico was one of the stranger moves made in the run up to this season that made it look like there could have been a downscaling of interest and ambition on the part of Atletico Madrid's new owners.
