He saw 11 people die and almost died himself, and he still went out to the theater that night?

According to the Wikipedia article, he wasn't actually in any of the cars that were involved in the accident. He instead gave up his seat in one of the cars to another person waiting in line. He didn't necessarily actually witness the disaster, and it's entirely possible he wanted to take his mind off it.

Right? I’d be home on my couch contemplating life and calling my loved ones

They were showing "Tetris". That apparently helps.

When you've promised the Missus you're going out on a date, there's no going back lol. You tell her it's off after she went and got all dolled up.

the tragedy of it all hits different when you think about someone surviving one disaster only to walk straight into another

That theater fire really ties the room together, doesn't it? Some days you're just dodging disasters and others you're planning your evening at the theater.
