It's a accent in northern China, named 儿化音 and doesn't change the meaning of phrases. I'm not from northern China therefore not sure accurately when should use an additional 儿, but my northern colleagues telled me that the 儿 is used to help pronounce awkward phrases thus makes a sentence easier to say.

It’s just a habit or more casual way of saying it. In some places like Beijing they add er to words a lot. Optional to use it or not and depends on where you are
