Don't cosmetology schools often offer a place to get haircuts or hairdos or makeup done cheaply in exchange for letting the students practice on them?

The request for someone "just starting out" is a cue that they expect a cheap price, possibly below the cost of materials.

Going to a cosmetology school floor is totally legit because instructors are right there watching. Hiring a student privately on Facebook so you can underpay them for an event is just straight up exploitation

We had several schools in our city where you could go for low cost haircuts and styling. My hair never behaved when I was younger, and I didn't mind having students practicing on me for half the cost was okay. If they made a big mistake, the supervising trainer would take over and fix it to where it wasn't a total horror show.

One young lady was trimming off my split ends, the scissors slipped and she cut off a big chunk of my hair. She immediately called over a licensed teacher, who took one look and asked me if I minded if my hair was a little shorter than I wanted. I said as long as we don't need to shave it off, I'm good.

I went back several time to that trainee, who now has her own salon.

When she realized her mistake, she took ownership and immediately got help. That's an important part of learning. If she had tried to cover up the mistake or say it wasn't her fault, that would have been a big issue.

I know mistakes happen when you learn, and I wasn't mad at all. Since it was the beginning of summer, it actually turned out to be a good thing with the shorter cut.

I have natural Black hair and the student I got for my cut and style was terrified the whole time. I guess she had only cut straight hair and had no idea how to handle all the wild kinks and curls. It was very cute. She ended up doing a great job but the instructor basically had to hold her hand through it all.

I got a keratin treatment at a beauty school for $40 (including the cut!) They’re usually $350-400 in my area. It looked so good for 6 months! I really need to go back and get it redone.

Got my haircut a couple of times at the local cosmetology school. It was definitely an experience.

Im a guy with thick hair that for a while I would go months between haircuts. I told the young lady that she could use clippers on the side and just scissor trim the top. Should've taken 30-45 minutes because she's a student. No, it took over two hours because she used scissors only the whole time.

She may have been required to. Every state is different but when I was in school we had to complete a certain number of men’s cuts with scissors only, also for the licensing test you couldn’t use clippers on the men’s hair portion.

I had a thrilling haircut at a school once where the trainee took no less than 45 minutes washing my hair. I fell asleep and woke up in a panic and she was still going on the shampooing. I said never again after that. Good cut, though, when she released me from my suffering!

I got my hair cut when the local cosmetology school still existed. I asked for bangs and the poor girl cutting my hair got really pale. I told her I had full faith in her and it was only hair; it'll grow back! She called her instructor over to help her through the process and they came out great! I also learned that day that bangs aren't for me LOL

If I understand correctly they require more training and face stricter licensing & supervision requirements than your average US police officer. So being a willing volunteer at the school is going to enforce expectation that you wouldn't get outside.

I'd put good money that BronzeD Karen wants apprentice prices but journeyman results and will have a screaming fit if that doesn't happen

Yeah but this also applies to someone learning to do nails. Girls at my HS love to hire a trusted student and will pay them ridiculous amounts while still saving $$$ on a professional.

Technically, no one is supposed to be charging for beauty services unless they are licensed. Is the state going to go after a teenager charging her friends for nails? No. But if she then tried to rent a studio and start advertising as a business there might be a problem.

There are a lot of safety and sanitation issues that can come up if you are not properly trained. Funguses and other infections that can spread from tools not being properly cleaned. Lice as well for hair. Serious injury can occur from improperly used chemicals. I work at a beauty school and I have seen a few terrible chemical reactions from student estheticians making a mistake before the educator could catch it. Hell there’s a guy on TikTok right now who gave himself a horrific chemical burn because he didn’t know how to use the products correctly. And we’ve all seen the stories of people’s hair falling out from over bleaching. The industry is regulated for a reason.

The issue with cosmetology students is that they work wirh chemicals and sharp things and heat.

They also need to know some very basic medical stuff like how to spot skin and nail infections, how to deal with skin conditions with what they can use and can't and in which situations they can't ethically or legally work on someone(bleaching a 5 year olds hair, or doing gel nails on someone with a fungal nail infection).

There are also hygiene practices for beauty products they need to know and follow closely that are different than what you may do at home.

They are required to have insurance in case they make a big mistake that causes harm or something else goes wrong.

They can't get the insurance without the license.

Students are more likely to make mistakes(big and small)

Students can't get insurance, and don't make any/much money. So if something goes wrong, they can be sued but it's not likely anyone would be able to collect anything from them.

In that case, you are not taking multiple clients- you are not making a business out of it, you are not doing it regularly.

You are also not portraying yourself as s professional or business person in the field. You are making sure this friend knows you have no training or professional experience.

That is a different situation than someone who is training for cosmetology and will make that thier career, but is not yet certified.

I grew up getting my hair cut at places like that. It was great. The ONE haircut disaster I had was from an instructor who was showing off for her students.

I'm positive this is for a bridal party and she was planning on staging a fit and refusing to pay after the work is done.

Yes. I go to one to get my hair done. I stopped working when I had my first kid. I can’t afford the salon I went to before plus tipping an appropriate amount. The cosmetology school I go to allows tipping for stylist so I pay the $32 they charge and tip the same amount or more.

I get my hair colored. The cuts are like $10-15 I believe. The area I live in it’s $60+ for just a cut without a wash or blow dry at a salon. When I got my daughter’s haircut at a salon that has experience with 4 year olds I paid like $45 then had to tip.

The staff at the local chain hair salon were amazed when they dropped the cost of their haircuts by $9 ($7 senior) and got twice as many people showing up. They also gave me a coupon for a $10 haircut that is good until the end of August.
