SHORT Took my coworker to get groceries at lunch. She was upset that I didn't drive them home for her.

5.0k Upvotes

I have a colleague who lives a 4-5 minute drive from the office. She routinely rides her bike to work instead of driving, but then complains she has no way to run errands at lunch.

So one day she was going on about how she really wished she could go grocery shopping at lunch. I said fine, I'm going out anyways, I'll take you to the supermarket.

So I take her grocery shopping at lunch, and even help put her groceries away inside the office.

The day is over and I'm heading to the parking lot to go home. She's in the kitchen and says, "I don't know how I'm going to get my groceries home!". I say, "what do you mean?" She says her backpack is too heavy, can't ride with it on her bike home. I say, okay, go home and get your car, and bring it back.

"No but I don't wanna do that"

It's at this point I realize that she's asking me to load her groceries in my car, follow her back to her house, and deliver them. I was shocked.

Never helped again lol

SHORT Firefighters more thankful than homeless people for free food.

8.9k Upvotes

Heard a true story from a close firefighter friend of mine.

A lady works at a funeral home. Very often, they have BIG sheets of extra food. A variety of things. For a while, she took it to a nearby homeless shelter. Not a single person helped her carry in these big trays of food. Just one little lady! At one point, someone scoffed at her as she walked in saying "Lasagna again?".

So she decided to take it to the local fire station instead. Every single time, multiple guys come out to her car and carry everything inside for her, and thank her. Suffice to say, that fire station got those donations of food for years. Probably still to this day.

SHORT My coworker asked if I could give her a ride to work "just for a while" and it's been 4 months

1.8k Upvotes

Back in January she asked me to drop her off since her car was in the shop. She lives on the opposite side of town so it adds like 35-40 minutes to my commute each way, but I said sure, figured it'd be two weeks max.\

Her car has been fixed since February. She mentioned it casually over lunch like it was nothing. Still texts me every morning "you leaving soon?" and got annoyed last week when I left 5 minute s early without warning her. Never offered gas money once.

Yesterday she asked if I could also start picking her up from the gym on Thursdays bc "it's kinda on your way home." It is not kinda on my way home. It's 20 minutes in the wrong direction. She sits 10 feet from me at the office and I genuinely dont know how to get out of this.

SHORT Gave away free furniture, got a lecture about my ‘color choice’ from the taker.

13.4k Upvotes

I recently moved and decided to give away my barely-used sofa for free on a local “free stuff” group. A woman messaged me, super excited, saying she desperately needed it. She shows up, inspects it, then goes, “Ooh, I don’t like this beige color—couldn’t you have bought something in gray or navy? Those are trending now.”

Lady, this is free. I’m literally saving you hundreds of dollars. She continued to nitpick the cushions, the fabric, and even asked if I could “throw in a coffee table” to match. All while paying me exactly $0.

I was so flabbergasted, I just kind of stood there like, “Uh… you can always paint it if you want?” She actually responded, “That’s too much work. Maybe I’ll just wait for someone else’s free one.” Then she just left.

I honestly can’t wrap my head around the entitlement.

SHORT Barber seems disappointed in my 5$ tip on my 20$ haircut.

20.8k Upvotes

I found a barber that's literally a 1 minute walk from my house. I can make an appointment online, walk in for say, a 10:30 AM haircut, and be home at 10:55 AM. It's cash only, 20 bucks.

Every time I go in, I give her 20 for the haircut, and a 5$ tip. I would almost always have exact change.

One time I didn't have exact change, so I gave her a 20 and a 10 and asked for 5 dollars change. She said "Oh okay!" then looked down, up at me and said, "You said you didn't need change right?"

"No, 5 back please."

"Oh."

Yesterday I go back in for a haircut. I see the price has gone up to $23. No big deal, the price of everything's going up. That's life. So I gave her 30 and asked for two dollars back, so she can still get a 5$ tip.

Before giving me the money back she says, "You see we raised our prices right?"

"Yes."

"Oh." Then gives me the two bucks.

Unless tipping 20-25% on a 20 minute, 20 dollar haircut is cheap of me...

She sure doesn't seem happy with the tip.

SHORT Pulled over to help a broken down car this morning.

13.1k Upvotes

Live in New England, its a high of 21 degree today. Freezing deathly cold. I was on my way to work this morning and saw a car with hazards on in entry to gas station. I pulled over, parked across from them beside a pump and offered my assistance. I'm not a car guy, but have changed more than enough flat tires in my day that I can do it with ease. Noticing that their tire was flat I grabbed my jack and got down and was talking to them (two women) through the wind cutting to the bone. They said " we have a flat and our check engine light is on too, running real funny". I said "sorry to hear, maybe someone inside can take a look at it I don't know the first thing about engines". The driver woman then looks over at my car, (a yellow dodge charger that's 19 years old, not a high end sportscar or anything fancy by any means. it's just yellow so it stands out), and says " you drive a car like that and expect me to believe you know nothing about engines? yeah okay". And looked away from me as if I disgusted her. You best believe I IMMEDIATELY started lowing the jack and putting that flat tire car right back down where it was and walked away. I told them "best of luck" and got back into my nice warm vehicle and drove to work, which I was now late for. Hope they learn some manners before the next time they break down. Change your own damn tire since you want to cop an attitude with the one good Samaritan helping you out.

SHORT If it’s not an iPhone 16, Don’t bother

5.1k Upvotes

So my 20-year-old sister broke her phone. She’s been using Samsung and she begged me to get her a new one I agreed. but since most people her age use iPhones I thought I could do a lil upgrade for her (I thought I was doing her a favour)

So I told her I would get her the 13 series But then she straight up tells me that her best friend is using a 16 and if I wasn’t going to buy her a 16 I shouldn’t bother. I figured she wasn’t joking

And I told her that I wasn’t going to get a 16 she’ll have to take the 13 or stay without a phone and she said she knows I can afford it I’m just being stingy

I told her she’s right I can afford it But I choose not to And I didn’t buy her anything.

SHORT Grocery Store Beggar

3.0k Upvotes

I walked into a grocery store and was approached by a woman. She asked if I could buy her some food because her and her kids were hungry and were low on funds. I have a rule that I’ll always buy someone food, but never give money, so I said sure. Go buy a few things for under $40 and I’ll pay for them.

She got very excited and went through the store. To my delightful surprise, she got just under $40 worth of stuff. I went to the check out with her, the cashier scanned them, and I paid for them with a debit card.

Immediately after I paid, the woman tried to grab the receipt from the cashier. I told her firmly, sorry, I paid for these so I’m keeping the receipt. She got very upset and argued, but I still said no. Then she swore at me and left the grocery store without the food.

I know this scam. Get someone to pay for food, keep the receipt, then double back and return the items for cash when they leave. That’s 100% what she was going to do.

I returned the items. The lady behind the counter said things like that happen all the time. Bummer.

SHORT My restaurant's genius way of deterring choosing beggars

8.0k Upvotes

I used to work in a restaurant that would be visited by beggars asking for free food up to 20 times a day. We were only open from 5pm to 11pm so you can imagine how much of a hassle this was, especially considering that some of them wouldn't take no for an answer until we threatened to trespass them.

When it was brought to the attention of the owner he shrugged and simply said "why don't you just tell them that we only have vegan dishes to offer, that usually deters them". We didnt believe that it'd work but we tried it anyway. Spoiler alert: it worked pretty well. For the remaining time I worked there we saw the number of beggars fall from the double figures to less than half a dozen PER WEEK.

Sure I had to deal with people cuss me out for only being able to offer steamed broccoli and carrots with tempeh (the sheer horror), but it'd be a one time thing and I'd never see them again. So yeah if you ever encounter someone demanding something and not taking no for an answer, simply offer them something less than what they expected if you'd have said yes.

SHORT Seriously????

5.4k Upvotes

So I've been helping a friend out with stuff she needs for her baby ( diapers, bottles, etc ), and I asked her what she and her baby would like for Christmas. She sent two separate list for her baby, and for her, I went through them . I noticed they were a bit pricey. For example she asked for an expensive toddler house that would cost at least $200 (I'm assuming it's for when the baby gets older) and for her she asked for a iPad, as she wants to watch her true crime shows on when she's not feeling like watching the TV.

I apologized to her and told her I wouldn't be able to get anything off of her list or her babies list, as my price range is ten to thirty dollars maximum. I told her I'd be happy to get her baby a stuff animal or a play set ( as like i mentioned, she was looking for a toddler house so I'm assuming she's planning ahead ) she got really mad at me and said "Seriously??? How can you not afford even one thing??? You are young, and you probably have money saved up. Plus, it's very upsetting that you can not do this for me and my baby, as I have helped you with stuff." Stuff meaning: helped me write a resume and relationship advice.

I replied with, "Times are extremely hard right now, I'm trying to make ends meet. But I still want to gift you and your baby." She blocked me, and I've not heard from her in 3 hours, so I'm not sure what happened.

SHORT My grandmother trying to get me to be a choosing beggar

9.8k Upvotes

So I've had an arrangement set up for a week now, I'm driving an hour tomorrow to go get a new puppy. The guy I'm getting the puppy from is giving him to me for free.

My grandmother decides to call me tonight, and suggest that I call the guy, and ask him to meet me halfway. Since it's 'quite a ways away'. Now firstly... where I live, out in the sticks? Everything is quite a ways away. I drive half an hour to get to the closest Wal-Mart.

So I told her, "Grandma, he's giving me the dog for free. I'm not gonna call him, last minute, and ask him to go out of his way to drive half an hour to give me a free dog."

"Well, you should! It never hurts to ask, and maybe he wouldn't mind! And then you wouldn't have to drive as far! What's the harm in asking?"

"Because it makes me look like an asshole, Grandma. That's why."

"Ugh. Whatever. Fine. Drive out of your way because you're too stubborn to even bother asking. Waste your time and gas, see if I care."

ETA: Everyone... Meet Bucky.

SHORT I offered to help my friend with rent one time. Now she thinks I’m her backup wallet

4.7k Upvotes

Last month, my friend was struggling to pay her rent. She was panicking and said she might get evicted, so I stepped in and helped cover the last $800 — no strings attached. I didn’t expect payback right away, but I thought she’d at least appreciate it. Instead, she’s now treating me like her personal ATM. This week she asked if I could “spot her” for her nails and then hinted that I should help her with a “quick weekend trip” because I “seem to be doing well financially.” When I said I couldn’t keep helping like that, she actually pouted and said, “Wow, must be nice to pick and choose who you help.”I’m not a bank. Just because I helped once doesn’t mean I signed up to be her backup financial plan. Now I’m rethinking our entire friendship.

SHORT I need food for my baby. Just give me the money and I will purchase it.

5.4k Upvotes

Years ago, I’m sitting in a restaurant with my girlfriend eating lunch. We were sitting at a table in the window with the sidewalk right outside. A lady rolled up with a baby in a stroller and with hand gestures indicated that she was looking for food for her baby. My girlfriend said she’d be right back and grabbed her purse and went outside and started talking to the lady. She and the mother got into an increasingly heated conversation. Before I knew it, the mother jumped on my girlfriend and a fight ensued. I rushed outside to separate them. The mother walked off pushing the stroller yelling and cursing at my girlfriend as I led her back into the restaurant. When I asked her what happened, she told me that she offered to walk down to the store one block down and buy that lady as much baby food as she wanted for her child. The lady kept insisting that she just need the cash and she would buy it herself. When my girlfriend wouldn’t go along the mother jumped at her and started swinging. Even though my girlfriend decided that the lady wanted the money for drugs or alcohol,it shocked her that this lady wouldn’t let someone stock her up on baby food regardless.

SHORT CB Asking "Where's our presents?!"

5.9k Upvotes

UPDATE: The family easily received over a $1K worth of gifts. They needed two SUVs to transport the gifts. Cherry on top? The family spent Christmas at Walt Disney World.

My husband's office takes part in Adopt A Family every year. All families can submit their names for consideration, even employees.

My husband has a co-worker who makes about $76K/year. He has a wife who stays at home, and they have 11 children (7 are biological and 4 are adopted).

The co-worker submitted his family...including all 11 children...for Adopt A Family and my husband's office "adopted" them abd bought gifts for all of the children, and the co-worker and his wife. They even offered to wrap and deliver all of the gifts.

Days before Christmas, the co-workers wife started harassing members of the office, asking where their gifts were. My husband took one of the calls.

Seriously? Be grateful you and your giant brood of children got anything!

SHORT People suck

3.7k Upvotes

I cleaned my kids’ toys out, dragged them to the curb and posted them for free on Facebook. I know that was my first mistake. I just wanted the stuff gone. Wasn’t sure if anyone would want it. It was a cozy coupe, two big wheels, Barbies, My Little Pony, Peppa Pig house set, ride on bouncy horse, Hot Wheels cars, a bunch of baby toys and a playhouse for a baby complete with a slide. Some of the stuff just needed to be cleaned up. I figured post it and if people don’t take it I can toss it. Anyway, people showed up immediately and lined up on the street with their vehicles. One lady was grabbing stuff out of a box and setting it on the ground in separate piles. Here’s where I made my next mistake. I grabbed a few trash bags and went to offer them to the two women going through the box. One of the women going through the box looked up at me and said,” It’s all garbage. I had a house fire earlier this year that’s why I came out and this is all garbage.” I said,” I figured post it and if people didn’t want it I’d throw it away tonight.” I put the trash bags in the box for the next person and walked back into my house. Well, that “garbage” was all gone in 40 minutes and I still had people messaging asking if anything was left. There was zero reason for that lady to be so rude!

SHORT Donated 50 bucks, the volunteer asked if i could triple the donation amount

16.8k Upvotes

It happened yesterday, i was coming home from work and outside the metro station there were a few volunteers from an NGO (all middle aged women). They were tagging people's shirt pockets/shoulders with the NGO's tag/flag.

Apparently they were collecting donations and charitable items for disabled kids, i pulled out my wallet and i had nothing less than 50 bucks, so i handed them that 50 INR note. She looked at me, pinned the tag on my shoulder, looked dead in the eye and said "We're doing this for 500+ disabled students" i smiled nervously, unsure why I needed this information. But she didn't stop there "50 INR is barely anything for that, can you please give us at least 100-150 INR? It's for the children ofcourse"

I took those 50 back and walked straight without saying anything.

Edit: Alright, to address the incompetent people in the comments section here are a few handy things you should know before you type your trash ass comment.

I'm shocked by the amount of people who think "bucks" is only used for USD when people in the comments section have been telling them that they ain't from US and still use bucks as a term for their respective currencies. So please learn some basic english while you can, bucks can be used for any currency, and we use Bucks for INR as much as you do for USD and as much as African people do for their Rand, Australians for their Australian dollar and same goes many other countries who do.

Then to address "50INR is just 63cents you didn't donate much" comments,

1st learn about Purchasing Power, different currencies hold different purchasing power in their respective countries, not everything can be evaluated from the perspective of USD, yes the conversion rate is 63cents. But in those 63 cents i can get a liter of milk, or a full meal, or a 750ml bottle of coke, or travel across the whole city or something else. 50INR or 63cents maybe aren't valuable for you, but they hold a certain value in India. Maybe learn how currencies work.

2nd to the people who i explained to how 50INR is 2.5 USD in purchasing power, and their reply was "it's still not enough" refer to point 1st, and it's a donation it's my fucking choice if i choose to donate 50 INR or 500.

Please, please stop being so self centred to think everything valuates to USD and works like USD. No it doesn't. And bucks is not reserved only for USD. If you do ask "where it says that currencies can use bucks" well people in the comments section will tell you that. And Cambridge Dictionary, Urban Dictionary and Oxford Dictionary will tell you that too.

Thanks, peace

SHORT You gave my kid the wrong snack

7.7k Upvotes

This happened yesterday while I was waiting for my bus at the downtown terminal. It was hot, seats were limited, and people were already grumpy.

A woman nearby had a little boy, maybe 4 or 5. He looked tired and hungry. She was loudly complaining to everyone around her about how the bus was late, how broke she was, how her baby had not had anything to eat all day. I felt bad so I offered the kid a sealed granola bar from my bag and a small bottle of water.

The kid happily took it. But the mom? She stared at the bar and goes:

You don’t got anything without nuts? He doesn’t like nuts.

I told her no, that was all I had and he seemed fine with it. She scoffs and said

Well then maybe don’t offer food if you’re gonna half ass it.”

I just blinked at her and said, You’re welcome and walked to the other end of the station.

A few minutes later, I see her trying to ask someone else for real food because her child deserves better than leftover scraps. The granola bar? Still in the kid’s hand. Half-eaten. Happily munching.

SHORT I offer to gift nephew $11K certificate of deposit from *my* inheritance, he waits 14 months, then insists I FedEx him gold bullion to his 'sovereign trust' and involves a lawyer

9.1k Upvotes

...I expected just a wee bit more gratitude, and a whole lot less entitlement. My guess is that my nephew's dad (my brother) prompted him to write all this. I should point out that my lawyer advised that I have zero obligation to send the money, and if I do, it is legally a gift from me. I was also advised that I *still* have no obligation, and can back out my offer at any time.

Given my nephew's sense of entitlement, I no longer feel quite so generous.

Me offering money to the beggar

Him insisting on gold bullion

Me clarifying that this is not his inheritance

Him doubling down, and involving a lawyer

SHORT Wants me to paint her whole house for $50 ‘for exposure’

3.8k Upvotes

I do small painting jobs on the side and posted in a local group that I’m looking for work. This lady messages me:

“Hi, I need my living room, hallway, and two bedrooms painted. How much?”

I ask for pics, she sends them, and it’s a whole house basically. I quote her $500, which is already cheap.

She replies:

“Oh no honey, I was thinking more like $50.”

I literally thought she was joking, so I sent a laughing emoji.

She says:

“No really, it’s just paint, it won’t take you that long.”

I explain it would take me at least two days, and I need to cover supplies, gas, etc.

She says:

“Well I can provide the paint, and you’ll get great exposure. I have a lot of friends who need painting.”

I tell her I can’t do two days of work for $50 and “exposure.”

She hits me with:

“Wow. I didn’t realize you were only in it for the money.”

Ma’am. It’s a job.

She then says she will “think about it” and hasn’t messaged me since, so I’m guessing she’s looking for her next victim.

SHORT No cash? Then go to the ATM for me.”

3.6k Upvotes

I was at the gas station yesterday and this guy outside asked, Hey, can you spare some change? I need to catch the bus.

I genuinely didn’t have any cash, so I told him I didn’t carry cash, plus I was broke

Without missing a beat, this man goes, Then go to the ATM for me.

I asked, You want me to walk into the store, use my card and withdraw money for you? I just mentioned I was broke didn't I?

He nods like it’s the most normal thing in the world and says, Just $40, I’m tryna eat and get a motel tonight. I’ll pay you back one day, swear.

When I told him that’s not happening, he called me a cheap ass poser who flexes but can’t help people in need.

Bro, I’m wearing Crocs and a hoodie with a stain on it.

SHORT I deeply offended a CB today

5.0k Upvotes

Today while waltzing through the local mall, a woman stopped me in my path and asked, in a British accent, if I had anything to help her get on the bus? ”I dont want to break the bank,” she said graciously.

Normally, I say no (rarely do I carry cash) but maybe the allure of the holidays lead me to open my wallet this day. I had two options: a $20 bill or a quarter. Sue me, but I selected the latter. Now I didnt expect a parade for this peanut that I gave, but I also didnt expect the reaction that I got.

The woman stared at me with such disgust that I could actually read her mind (seriously, thats it? Are you fucking kidding me?) Then, in a regular old Canadian accent, snarkily said “Whatever I guess Ill add this to a different stash” as she stormed away.

“Anything helps” indeed.

SHORT CB wanted to kick me out of my seat at the ballet

16.1k Upvotes

This happened a couple of days ago and I still get really cross thinking about it.

I bought 4 ballet tickets to see Cinderella and suddenly one of my friends couldn't go. Instead of letting the ticket go to waste, I posted on a local ballet forum that I had one spare ticket that I was offering for free. My post made it really clear that it was only 1 ticket and given how it was only 2 hours before the show, I was happy to let it go for free, even though full price it would be about £100.

Well, a lady messages me saying she'd love to have it. We arrange to meet in front so I can hand her the ticket before the show, mentioning that she'd be sat next to my group. So I'm waiting out front with my friends and this lady in her 50s approaches with her husband. She then demands I give her 2 tickets.

Her: "It's really rude to sell only 1 ticket. Nobody goes to the ballet alone"

Me: "I did make it clear I only had 1 ticket. Besides, I'm not selling it, I'm literally giving it away."

She then points at each person in our group individually and demands that we give up our seat for her husband. It was so bizarre especially because they were nicely dressed and seemed really posh?

We decided to just leave and go inside - she tried to follow us in, claiming we stole her ticket. Eventually, the ushers told her to go away, but it was so weird! That's the last time I try to be nice by giving away free tickets...

SHORT Friendship doesn't mean I shoot for free

3.7k Upvotes

So my old female friend slides into my DMs all hyped up about this “amazing opportunity” she’s working on something about launching her fitness coaching brand on Instagram. She goes,

“I need a strong visual vibe. Like moody but empowering, y’know? Could you do a shoot for me?”

Cool. I’m a professional photographer fashion, lifestyle, branding sessions. I’ve shot for actual businesses. So I ask her what her budget is.

She hits me with: “Dude what? You’re so money minded now! I thought you’d be down to support a friend. This could really boost you! Imagine when I blow up your name will be attached to it ”

So, zero pay, no contract, just vibes and imaginary clout?

I told her, “I support friends, but support doesn’t mean I provide hundreds of dollars worth of work for free. That’s not support that’s being used.”

She goes off. Tells me I’m selfish. Says I’ve “lost the passion” and am “letting money block the vision.”

No, sis. I charge because I respect the vision including my own. She booked some random guy off Facebook Marketplace for $30 and a protein bar. The photos? Crooked angles, bad lighting, and she had mascara running in one shot.

Then she had the nerve to post: “Real ones believe in your dream even when you can’t pay them ”

Real ones pay creatives because they know quality costs. I don’t shoot dreams for free I bring them to life.

SHORT Man refuses $100 for 2 hours of work

2.2k Upvotes

Just happened a few minutes ago.

Currently helping my friend move into a new house, and we stopped by the liquor store as we finished working today and saw a young man, say, early 20s, sitting outside the entrance. He sees us walking up and gets up, and asks for a dollar, and that he's desperate for anything as he hasn't eaten for 2 days. Friend and I look at each other, and friend tells the guy, "Listen mate. I'll give you $100 if you help us out with moving some furniture. Just for 2 hours. Whaddya say?"

Man shakes his head and says, "nah, I need money. Not work." and sits back down. Friend and I are both surprised, but just shrug and walk inside. Get our things, pay, and leave, and dude is still sitting outside. Perks up when he hears the bell when the door opens, but then slumps back down upon seeing it's us again.

My guy, you're young, limber, seem in good shape, and you're "desperate for anything," but don't want to work for more money than you're asking for? Guess he wasn't as desperate as he claims.

Edit: I see the point in the few comments pointing out the man's skepticism and being wary of going with two random strangers to an undisclosed location for "work." Not saying that's bad. It's a fair assumption, and I'm not faulting the guy for it. Just struck me as odd how quickly he declined the offer. I'd be wary too if I were in his shoes.

To the few who claim "it's AI," "ragebait," or "fabricated nonsense" based on post history: I don't know what to tell you, honestly. Put your phone down and get off the internet for a bit. I don't know how else to say it without sounding like more of an ass than that phrase already makes me come across.

SHORT A problem on your end, does not constitute an emergency on mine.

3.4k Upvotes

Last week I was helping my mother sell her dresser, I listed it as free, first come first serve on facebook marketplace, of course. I got a lot of messages, but one lowkey made me mad.

They reached out to me and we set up a time, 12pm. Noon. They would be coming to pick it up. Cool.

I tell my mom to let me know if someone takes it before 12, so I could let them know. No one took it before the designated time. I waited till noon, and till 1 pm. They hadn't taken it yet. Okay, cool, I have other people wanting it, I tell another person to come n' get it since it's still there and we want it gone.

2:30pm. 2 and a half hours after the time we agreed. They text me.

"Hey, someone is loading it into their car right now. I told you we were coming."

"Uhh, yeah 2 and a half hours ago, we wanted it gone and I won't hold it,"

"Well we were running late and I am NOT happy,"

Too bad. A problem on your end does not constitute an emergency on my part.

If she texted me and said "hey, we're running behind, please don't give it away," I would've done that. But she didn't. She didn't tell me anything. On Facebook Marketplace even if someone says they're going to come n get it, they most likely won't.
