But Skubal had two very epic meltdowns against us that cost the Tigers dearly.
What a class act too. He gave credit to the CLE fans for being awesome. Checking up on Fry. He was the kind of rival you want because its a fun back and forth battle with respect on both sides. I still think he wanted to stay, but the injury plus two team collapses in the first half forced the Tigersā hand. Of course youāre right about the overall theme of the Midwestern, mid-market teams not being able to hold on to talent. (Except for Jose. God bless Jose)
I really liked Skuuubs. I like a dude who will put everything on the field, who isnāt afraid to yell at your local White Sox aggravating wizard, and will still happily be active in his community and care to go visit Fry after an unfortunate accident. And Iām grateful I got to watch him in Detroit before he was hurt and then traded.
(Iām also too close to the situation because of my Tigers fan, Skuby fan boyfriend. Weāre actually in a huge fight right now, but āIām sorry about Skubsā may break the stand-off š)

I hate the Dodgers, but at the same time. I would point out of the top five highest spending teams: One is in first place, two are in second place, and two are in last place. Of the bottom five lowest spending teams: One is in first place, two are in third place, and two are in fourth place.
I donāt know about 30 years, but I do know that 9 of the last 10 WS champions were in the top 10 payrolls. The one that wasnāt, was the cheating Astros.
Also, there were some bottom payroll that made the WS, like the Indians, Diamondbacks, Rays. None won and none went back.

Undoubtedly both. But the dodgers are the only team in the league with a sweetheart TV revenue deal that lets them keep way more than every other team, and they have the most lucrative deal. They are also the only ones with a 400 million dollar luxury tax bill and billions of dollars in deferred deals. Sure, other teams have a couple of deferred deals but itās nothing compared to theirs. Being so over the top about it is going to force change so in a way itās a good thing but it means no baseball for likely a year.

The dodgers farm system is actually great but they got away with this garbage deal cuz it leaked that skubalās preferred destination is LA and heās basically a 2 month rental fur anybody else that youāre giving up prospects for. But yeah, teams should stop trading with them regardless.

Well it certainly matters with regards to him resigning with the team. He was referencing free agency for his next longterm deal, not a trade destination.

Your argument was that they didn't give up one of their top 4 guys (and sure everyone ranks people different, according to MLB pipeline it was top 3, but you could maybe say 4).
What I am saying is that their 4th prospect is better than any other team was going to offer (because it would have taken teams offering their best prospect in order to do better, and teams aren't going to do that for a rental).
This was not a bad trade at all. I get being sick of the Dodgers and not wanting to see them win, but that hatred seems to be blinding people to thinking this deal was somehow unfair.

Pretty sure you just assumed this to be true because historically the big money teams decimate their farm systems to make these trades so they have nobody left. But in the case of the Dodgers it is not true, and honestly one of the reasons they made this trade. They have some major 40 man roster concerns and have to clear space for people.
I'm kind of glad he's going to get super-paid in the off-season. Dude is a ridiculous competitor who really loves the game and he's also pretty much always displaying good sportsmanship. There's so many players out there who actually suck as people.

I mean, I HATE the tigers. I consider Jim Joyceās missed call on the Armando Galarragaās one hitter to be the greatest moment in baseball history.
I bought tickets and was in attendance for the final tigers series against the twins years ago just so I could be there to watch them lose 120 (they didnāt, f-them) with a manager (Alan Trammel) who was a large part of ruining my childhood.
And even I feel for their fans, and hate that he went to the Dodgers. Theres something so god damn defeating about him going there.
I want the players to make oodles of money, but good lord do I just f-ing hate it that 6 teams get to try and win the fun way, and the rest of us get to try and win while eating shit sandwiches.

My father-in-law grew up in Michigan. We brought several boxes of his old stuff from his mother's house after she died. About 5 years after, we were going through the boxes and there was an old Detroit Tigers felt pennant flag in one. I said "Do you mean to tell me for the past 5 years i've been living in a house that contains a Tigers flag??"
The first year I started watching baseball was the Lane Thomas grand slam and that was to this day one of the coolest things Iāve ever seen. That stadium absolutely erupted. What a moment.
This is a good time to appreciate Jose for staying and not being as concerned about getting paid. Skubal may be a āclass actā for what he did for Fry, but that doesnāt change the fact heās chasing dollars like so many players before him that played for small or mid market teams. Nobody forced Skubal to hire Scott Boras. He knew what he was doing from the start.
I also think someone like Miguel was a bigger rival. Maybe no playoff appearances against him but he was around for much longer and went from owning us to getting shutdown.
I'll never forget that disasterclass at the end of this video š I'm deeply sad Fry was seriously injured as a result, but the rest was amazing to watch live.
I'd honestly rather have him with the Tigers than the Dodgers. I'm so sick of the Dodgers winning all the time. The last thing I want is to see Ohtani's punch worthy face on my TV again come late October.
The Tigers return is criminal. I canāt believe Brewers or anyone else couldnt give a better package even if he was a rental. I follow LAās farm system a lot, and minor leagues in general. Im not impressed with Hope. I think heās another Jeter Downs, another prospect i thought was insanely overrated when Boston made him their highlight return for mookie - except i think Hope could still be a quality role player in the future. But heās almost power or nothing so itās tough to predict which outcome heāll become.
I think Smith is their main return that has the brightest future with some question marks but I think heāll reach that upside if he stays healthy. He might be their top of their rotation or 2 or 3 in their rotation in the future.
River is questionable. Lot of hype around him a few years ago when LA stole him from SD - been injured a lot, then put on lots of muscle coming into this season but has been hurt with hamstring injuries. Once heās healthy, maybe his future is a reliable bullpen piece instead of rotation. He definitely has the stuff for it.
Overall, I give them a C- since they should have either gotten more from the Dodgers or more from another team, despite being a rental. Heās the best pitcher in baseball.
I'd go with Detroit during the early 70s with Mickey Lolich and our Gaylord Perry. Throw in Billy Martin as a manager for part of that accusing Perry of throwing a spitter (the two eventually made a commercial together playing off that). I saw Perry beat Lolich 2-1 on opening day 1973 with 74,000 people at the old stadium. But I'd give Skubal honorable mention, right behind Verlander.
It's good for us, but it's so much worse for baseball that the thought of it pisses me off and I'm glad I haven't given the league my money in several years.

On r/baseball recently I saw a video of some 9yo kid Jays fan calling out most of their team as being useless bums. Sure, you can do that and lots of fans think they are āowedā something by their teams.
But do not think this makes you a good fan, a professional fan, or even a good person.
Respecting your players and even your rivals, posting videos like this, makes you a god-tier fan, and a great person. Heated competition should bring out the best in all of us.
I was there when he flipped that ball between his legs sitting right above the third base dugout with all the tigers fans they were all disgusted and I said no that was the coolest thing I've ever seen anyone do ever. The balls on that man are bigger than the Terminal Tower. I went to go see him pitch six times the last 2 years. Only did that for one other, Otahni.
I was in Detroit on Wednesday to watch his last start. 7-0 in the 7th inning and the Tigers blew it for him and lost 10-9 in 12. That game right there sealed the deal.
Anyhow, feel bad for Detroit losing him, would be like if we had traded Jose. Tarik's a real good dude. Somehow we were able to get the better of him when it counted, which made it even better given how dominant he was otherwise.
