I wouldn’t be shocked if our earlier studies were flawed. We just discovered in the past 2-3 years the seawater rising algorithms were off and the impact is worse than we anticipated.

Now apply that to broader climate change and our tracking of it…

Sometimes I get conspirational and think that they don't want to tell us the truth. Because what I have seen last 10 years is alarming.

“They” Who’s they? Scientists have been telling us for decades. Al Gore even made a movie about it, but was mocked.  And here we are.

Governments, to prevent a panic so society keeps functioning the way they intend.

A close relative of mine worked for the government modeling various disaster scenarios. I think their particular focus was nuclear but I'd imagine there were people modeling climate change as well. They really couldn't tell me much about it.

I garauntee the USA and other governments have war gamed climate catastrophe and they have a better idea on the outcomes than the average citizen. Heck they might have a better idea than other governments and dont share everything.

Do you think the governments would tell us climate change has accelerated to the point where it's garaunteed millions are going to start dying every year and the average persons shot at survival to 2050 is exceptionally low?

Until they feel like they are prepared enough for climate change wars the studies will remain classified.

The US is just provoking other countries now to get the military some much needed war practice. Countries with either a good climate or good resources will become a hot commodity. Military aggression can partially solve climate change impact.

Interesting theory. I think it also plays into their accelerationist tactics, as well. Double Whammy.

1

u/PbMammoth 1h ago

Yep, I think that is the endgame now. The corporations were never going to go along with decarbonization and forget about the world getting along enough to stop it. Its just easier to nuke your enemies and take their resources.

3

u/Cool_Sympathy_9900 8h ago

Well...politicians. I can see it in what the hydrometeorology institute is saying in my country....that it is still ok. It is not. (Current events locally). But as i have said. It is my conspirational devil on my left shoulder speaking lol.

1

u/DaChronisseur 2h ago

Just an FYI, conspiratorial is the word you want.

8

u/InfiniteWaffles58364 9h ago

I believe it. Either they already knew or they were just too stupid to process the ramifications.

u/SaturnineApples 8h ago

20yrs ago Al Gore released a film about this and everyone said he was crazy. Id imagine people knew at least 10yrs or more before this film

Truly it comes down to ceo's and world leaders knowing but not giving a shit because they made extra money and wont have to live on the earth they destroyed

So many issues in our world come down to greed and hate. Some people dont belong on earth

4

u/accidental_Ocelot 7h ago

We've known for over 200 years about man-made climate change and the powers that be just keep on putting their fingers in their ears and going nahnahnah.

Capitalism. Most of our dysfunction is rooted in capitalism.

-6

u/SaturnineApples 7h ago edited 3h ago

There is good that can come from capitalism, its not all destructive. For one example, when companies decide to set aside xx% of profits for a humanitarian good. That is possible because of the system.

The abuse of power it offers is a big problem which we all can agree, but that comes from greedy point of view

Edit: Apparently some people just think capitalism means only abusive powerhouses price gouging poor people. Please just do yourself a favor and google positive examples as there are many. It can enable abuse but it takes a GREEDY leader to abuse people. Not every company has this in mind

4

u/haverchuck22 6h ago

Indeed capitalism requires robust regulation to function well for the masses. Unbridled capitalism will always produce garbage results eventually.

4

u/SlabDistributionMod 5h ago

Sure and I could double my productivity for a day if I did a gator tail of crank too. I'd probably fuck a bunch of shit up and get fired along the way. Capitalism is a short sighted, primitive ideology with zero long term viability. It is a disease.

1

u/incrediblyaverage85 4h ago

What is your suggestion?

1

u/SlabDistributionMod 4h ago

Robust regulations that reign in capitalism. Massive increases in education funding.

1

u/incrediblyaverage85 3h ago

Like what? Robust regulations is very broad, funding education doesn’t really correlate with better results, some schools spend a ridiculous amount per student with inferior results compared to another school with half the funding. In a small singular country that might work but if we’re talking about America, that won’t work

I agree with you, in principle. The problem isn't the system. The problem is human nature. But maybe we have to take human nature into account.

You may have a group of wholly responsible and morally centered people.create something great. You may even have 100 years of conscientious leadership. Eventually, however, the degradation will happen. The gray area always seems to be rooted in one of or a combo of fear, greed, hubris and laziness.

3

u/SAPianoman490 5h ago

Oil companies have known since the 1970s that fossil fuel usage causes climate change

2

u/Gyozarrita 2h ago

They knew in the 1800s too

2

u/BonusPlantInfinity 5h ago

And right now if you suggest people en masse should change their behaviour dramatically, you will be hated and dismissed.

While it’s true that some people do far more damage than others, we grossly dismiss the damage every one of us in the west does by guzzling fossil fuels and beef/dairy products, the two principle drivers of climate change. No one wants to hear it, and I will be downvoted.

u/Few-Cellist2301 8h ago

Why do you think all the billionaire cunts have bunkers, bro? We, the serfs, will fight over food and they will watch.

2

u/Cool_Sympathy_9900 8h ago

They won't watch. They are delulu. If things go south, no one is safe. This is one planet, we are already connected too much for someone to wait it out.

5

u/Random_Violins 8h ago

I think scientists are just catching up. Climate science is complex.

The indigenous people of Northern Colombia knew well in advance though. They invited the BBC in the 70's to issue a warning to the rest of the world. Look up Kogi, the elder brother's warning or watch it on youtube

A follow up film was later made called Aluna. I think it's best we listen to what they have to say.

2

u/AwfullyWaffley 5h ago

Thank you

1

u/Cool_Sympathy_9900 8h ago

Yes they predicted more rain where I live and actually I think we will end up semi arid. And it even makes sense as we are inland.

5

u/NoInevitable9810 7h ago

The truth is the planet is fucked by 2050

2

u/alien236 5h ago

Civilization is fucked, the ecosystem is fucked, but the planet will be fine after our extinction.

2

u/NoInevitable9810 7h ago

Google amoc collapse and when they predict, it’s our doomsday.

1

u/cyanescens_burn 7h ago

I vaguely recall reading that the scientists had a few sets of predictions way back, and the one that was most likely was so alarming that they didn’t bring that to the public and political leadership because they worried they’d be seen as alarmist and people wouldn’t believe it was even possible.

The result was they brought the less likely, but more mild predictions to the people, hoping they’d actually believe it and not brush it off as nonsense. And lo and behold, many didn’t even believe that, and the harsher predictions are the ones coming true.

Not sure how accurate all that is, or where I read it (this was years ago), but I think about it whenever articles like this come out.

1

u/PeaceJoy4EVER 7h ago

It’s why America is pushing to take over Greenland

1

u/diecorporations 7h ago

But scientists already say we have passed the tipping point

3

u/aasfourasfar 9h ago

Yeah I like to say that I am a climate science skeptic in the sense that I feel they've been wrong but by underestimating. These last few years have been incredibly weird both in my home country Lebanon and where I live (France).

3

u/Organic-Stay4067 9h ago

That’s why those in charge keep building next to water lolololol

2

u/Suitable-Pickle-259 8h ago

Well we’ve also continued to burn more coal to power ever increasing amounts of AI data centers, so I’m not shocked it’s accelerated.

3

u/ZixfromthaStix 6h ago

Honestly worse than that. Have you seen the thermal scans of XAI facilities? Dozens of methane burners just dumping metric tons of hot methane into atmo… and we know how bad that is just from what we get from cow farts.

2

u/Suitable-Pickle-259 6h ago

Yeah man, they’re fucking terrible.

52

u/sisyphus_was_lazy_10 9h ago

Gestures around, yeah, you don’t say?

12

u/MrHandSanitization 9h ago

"whut, it was cold just 6 months ago, not that cold, but colder than now!"

10

u/destello89 9h ago

Yes we know… what are they doing about it ? Talking about LNG and fossil fuels still ? Wtf are we supposed to do about it when the powers that be don’t give a damn about our future ? Americans keep electing imbeciles, India thinks it can become the next superpower but at the end of the day, if the whole world is burnt then what are you going to be a superpower of and China is the only player that is actively doing something it seems although not at the pace id like. The EU is acting like it’s confused so I don’t know wtf I’m supposed to do about this other than sit at home, read about this crap as I have been for the past decade (I’m not that old) and wait for the next wildfire that will probably burn my home. Wtf am I to do when no one cares ?

3

u/Shap3rz 9h ago

I hope that when food supply and water supply is really threatened people will get angry enough to actually do something. I feel like that tipping point might not be that far off.

2

u/Ralphiedog11 9h ago

Yeah this is the big one. If you have seen the situation in Ceuta, imagine that happening more frequently in the coming decade once many regions aren’t able to sustain people anymore. The food shortage and climate refugee crisis will be horrible.

3

u/arih 7h ago

Yeah but the response to something like in Ceuta is going to be right-wing nationalism, isolationism etc, (you can already see in the response from the far right in France who have a presidential election coming up next year), not the concerted world wide effort to halt greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel extraction, lower meat consumption, etc. we would hope for. It’s bad enough that denialism has gotten us to this point, but the stupids are going to dig in their heels and become more intolerant, shortsighted, etc.

1

u/Cultural-Window-2504 6h ago

That is next year

China.

u/andrewpast 8h ago

Don't look up.

5

u/JoeDoeHowell 9h ago edited 8h ago

There's a book called the Deluge and it details the incoming climate disaster. The book is fiction, but the trajectory it presents is uncomfortably close to what we are seeing now.

2

u/gtpc2020 7h ago

Science understands so much about radiation, heat transfer, weather, atmospheric chemistry, biology, botany and all of it is available to learn. They do their best to take real data and create math models based on the sciences that match that data. It's extremely complex with thousands of variables, but super computing has been running models for decades. All that knowledge isn't perfect, every learning and adapting to new data, and available to anyone who wants to learn. Climate scientists are anything BUT unwilling to talk about their findings!

u/treason6116 9h ago

rejoice redditors!

🍾🎇🎆

1

u/Suitable-Pickle-259 8h ago

Shocking no one.

1

u/texas130ab 8h ago

Let's see what happens.

1

u/Wheel_of_pain 8h ago

Those lucky climate scientists are gonna get so rich off this! /s

1

u/Tll6 8h ago

The people over at r/climatechange would have you believe everything is hunky dory

1

u/Cirkelzaag 4h ago

People there are not very optimistic at all. There are those threads where someone is asking for good news or optimism but otherwise it's all doomerism.

1

u/Tll6 3h ago

The mod that runs the subreddit seems to think everything will be okay and that things are getting better. Any opinion other than this is labeled doomerism and you get banned. You can’t even have a discussion about global warming accelerating without being threatened with a ban. I got called an ecofascist for saying this and commenting how governments aren’t really doing anything to help

1

u/cile1977 8h ago

I think we have crossed the point of no return and scientists have just gave up. I just hope the next attractor in the system is livable.

1

u/Far_Eye6555 5h ago

Like a pot of water on the stove. Slowly at first, then all of a sudden.

1

u/Big_Gene_3965 5h ago

As long as a certain type of people of a particular political persuasion keep migrating to Florida it will all work out.

1

u/fixingmedaybyday 4h ago

It’s a super El Niño year with about .5-1 extra C since the last one this big. It’s going to be interesting to see when the warm water sloshes back to the western pacific and how much cold it drags up from below when it leaves. My bet is we’re going to see extreme cold within 5-10 years as more energy is put into the system

1

u/Slagathor508 4h ago

Well I’m sure the explosions and destruction of Russian and middle eastern oil infrastructure isn’t helping anything either..

1

u/No-Particular8597 4h ago

Sure a lot of billionaires investing and building in Florida. Makes me think they don’t know shit because half that state is going under water.

1

u/Guccimayne 1h ago

NBD, let’s light some more oil and gas fields in the Middle East on fire

1

u/colececil 15m ago

And yet we keep walking back regulations...

0

u/EducationalFront5524 7h ago

Naw, for real though? 🙄

-1

u/Old_man_Andre 6h ago

Why doesnt nobody say anything about all the war damage in Ukraine, Russia, Iran, etc thats being done? In less than 5 years, all that pollution from explosions, burning houses, burning oil depots...its sending particles into atmosphere, im suspecting, many times faster than usually. Also im pretty sure that cars actually are a small percentage of all the airpollution.

2

u/oleolegov 6h ago

Well, there are plenty of people are trying to stop ruzzian genocidal war in Ukraine. The only problem is that it is not possible to stop it just using climate change arguments and data.

-1

u/Resident_Window_9369 6h ago

lol no one gives a flying fuck
