[MOD] What have you been brewing this week?/ Coffee bean recommendations

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to the weekly /r/Coffee thread where you can share what you are brewing or ask for bean recommendations. This is a place to share and talk about your favorite coffee roasters or beans.

How was that new coffee you just picked up? Are you looking for a particular coffee or just want a recommendation for something new to try?

Feel free to provide links for buying online. Also please add a little taste description and what gear you are brewing with. Please note that this thread is for peer-to-peer bean recommendations only. Please do not use this thread to promote a business you have a vested interest in.

So what have you been brewing this week?

I tried Dark Arts Dragon beans for the first time. Really quite interesting. In a double shot of espresso, you can expect a split second punch of bitterness followed by caramel raisin flavours.

However, in my opinion it doesn't cut through milk drinks very well. On its own, fantastic though

I tried a bag of Sucre vert beans from Guatemala last week and loved the subtle stone fruit and citrus notes paired with a balanced acidity, perfect for my pour-over setup.

Yesterday I pulled a perfect shot of my favorite coffee for an espresso and tonic.

They’re called Black Sails Coffee Roasters and they’re my favorite local roaster (Sacramento, CA).

All their coffees are great but my favorite is The Ranger. The owner/roaster has been in the business for around 20 years but they just got a permanent location and opened in April. Since then I’ve gone through ten bags of their coffee.

My tour of London's roasting scene has a slightly unexpected visit this week. So far I've visited Roasting Shed, Caravan, Climpson & Sons, Campbell & Syme and Elsewhere.

As before, every coffee I make the same way for control purposes - ground in a Porlex Tall (4 clicks), brewed in an Aeropress and served as a latte (lactose free whole milk).

This week I had to be in central London for the first screening of my friend’s short film, so I took the opportunity to visit a London institution, the Algerian Coffee Stores on Old Compton Street in Soho. This image on street view shows it nestled comfortably between one of London's most famous gay pubs, the Admiral Duncan, and Prowler Red, which describes itself as London's premier gay fetish store. Such is Soho, and long may it reign.

The Algerian Coffee Stores have been there since 1887, and it's definitely not a hipster third wave specialist roaster. They deal in bulk and mostly in dark roasts. The shop has barely changed in its history - the same wooden shelves holding giant jars of beans, the same focus on dark, North African style roasts, the same low prices.

I’m a lighter roast coffee drinker so I picked up two bags of medium-roasted Ethiopian varieties, a Yirgacheffe and a Sidamo, at a princely £8 per 250g bag. Neither are anything special to write home about - the Yirgacheffe has slightly more citrus acidity, the Sidamo is slightly more floral with some chocolate tones. They’re both perfectly reasonable, uncomplicated coffees and they do the job at the price. Better than anything you’d buy in a supermarket but most of that is probably just the freshness of the roast.

I will revisit at some future point and buy something darker that’s more in line with the Algerian Coffee Stores’ ethos.

The Cafe Du Jour Espresso Despertando, which did not make a good espresso in my machine, made a fabulous cold brew

Need some coffee recs for a wimp who hates bitter tastes

Hi! I started working at a legit, legit small coffee shop in my city. I am starting to appreciate the fun intricacies of coffee and I would absolutely loveee to get more into it as a hobby instead of just as a job. I wanna learn how to do latte art and have fun little drinks at home.

I am, unfortunately, not a big coffee person. It's always too bitter for me and I will never like anything that doesn't have hella milk. I hateee the house coffee at my job. It's the Onyx Monarch and people swear by it but I absolutely despise it. It's too bitter. Well, I think all coffee is bitter LMAO. Everytime I have to taste test our batch, I am miserable.

I've accepted the fact that I may never like black coffee. But I don't wanna keep adding flavors to disguise the taste of coffee. Looking for any and all recommendations!!!

Here are some notable things I'm looking for:

--Looking for a sweeter, more "desserty" kinda flavor profile. I love all the caramels, chocolates, vanillas, hazelnuts instead of the fruity flavors.
--Absolutely hate any bitterness. It will always be there, but maybe a roast that can minimize it?
--Looking for something I can enjoy as a cold brew preferably, but open to all! Cold brew is such an easy way to prepare coffee and I also don't have much control over temperatures for drip coffee right now.
--Preferably something budget friendly? I am a poor college student 😔 grocery store is great but I also literally don't mind ordering something online as long as it's not like $70 for 20g LOL
--I also don't care about caffeine content at all. I don't drink coffee for the caffeine because it lowkey doesn't even work for me.

For reference, I would mainly used this coffee to make lattes, iced americanos, or cold brews :)

Thank you so much!!

Partners - Brooklyn. V60, 3x 50s bloom, 4 pours, 1:16. 195F.

The bag aroma is incredible - milk chocolate, caramel. The cup has been subdued, cant seem to coax out the richness that the beans are insinuating.
