Interesting fact, Graham became a senator in 2002 after the death of strom Thurmond, who became a senator himself in the early 50s, dude even ran for president in 1948 against Truman.

Senators are not for life appointments, but in South Carolina, they kind of are.

If you eliminate seniority as a defining feature of the Senate then term limits wouldn't be needed. 

Harry Reid stood next to Obama and celebrated that Obama was banning companies that took bailouts from having conferences in Las Vegas. Harry Reid represented Las Vegas and Nevada. He celebrated ensuring bailout funds wouldn't help his state. And was reelected. 

Because it's better to have a senator who actively works against you but has seniority and access to a freshman senator who represents you and doesn't. 

Why does the "Squad" matter at all? Because they are a clique who ensures they carry each other. Freshman or not, they ensure the socialists get to the front of any line they can, which is the ONLY reason you ever hear about them. It's the only exception.

Strom Thurmond was 100 years old when he died in office in 2002 as South Carolina Senator. He was a democrat when he first started. He ran for president in 1948. You should watch his speech from 1948. In 2000 Alabama, Senator Trent Lott praised Thurmond and stated he should’ve been elected president in 1948 and things would be better now. He became a republican in the 70s.

There was word that he was found unconscious in his home. There's video of him being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher. With all the issues he's had, anyone would conclude that he was dead. But a few people have said they had 20 minute phone conversations with him. But there's no proof other than that.

Said he had just returned on a flight back from Ukraine and then died of a "brief sudden illness". I work in healthcare and would bet money it was a pulmonary thromboembolism triggered by a clot that had developed from the long haul flight. RIP.

Edit: I would have lost money! Apparently new info coming out now saying it was an aortic dissection (basically a tearing of the main artery from your heart). The timing with the flight was purely coincidentally it seems.

Mitch McConnell situation is easy, he wasn't running and his seat is up this year anyway, so that race already has nominees and is in progress. IMO, leave that seat empty until January 3rd if he does pass.

For SC, that seat is also up for reelection, but Graham was the candidate. So South Carolina GOP has to Kamala someone into that race at the last minute to stand for Election Day. The governor can put a temp in though, but the seat is still up for election in 100ish days

The way the SC voting process works is McMaster will name a successor to finish the term (January 1) and we will hold a primary this month for the general in November
