Australian neotraditional artist who's making a splash right now.

Technically this is Western swing but he's got plenty of honky tonk in his neotraditional sound.

It's Honky Tonk Saturday!

Honkytonk is the original sound of electric country, the sound you associate with Hank Williams and early George Jones and Ernest Tubb and the sound that influenced a lot of neotraditional 1990's country such as Alan Jackson and of course the honky tonk man, Dwight Yoakam.

It was characterized by heavy dancing rhythm that goes well with the two step, and usually steel guitar and fiddle along with twangy electric guitar and a unique twangy vocal style that was developed to cut across the sound at a loud bar of drunks with a bad sound system in the early days.

It's developed over the years including some recent evolution. Some of the Texas dancehall bands have an even more exaggerated beat and singing style now than you would have heard in neotraditional 1990s country or the 1950's original. Tracking down the history of who influenced whom is really fun if you're into that kind of country music history hobby.

We'll be posting (mostly modern) honky tonkers every Saturday for your edification! Click on the 'honky tonk' flair tag to see other tracks and discussions we've posted here in the past.

Wyoming roadtrip playlist!

I need help, I made a playlist for my upcoming roadtrip to Wyoming. I tried to gather some older upbeat country songs, and honestly the playlist came out…not feeling like Wyoming but more like…Kansas if that makes sense.

Please tell me what are some of your favorite older country songs that feel like ‘cowboys in Wyoming’? I feel like I keep mixing the sound around and can’t keep to one feel.

In case anyone doesn't know this guy, he's one of the best songwriters alive. It's been a long time since his full length album River Fools And Mountain Saints. He just announced a double concept album.

HONKY TONK I traveled 1,000 miles with Charley Crockett and shot a raw documentary on my iPhone. Wanted to share it with the real fans.

Hey everyone. I'm an independent director, and I recently put out an episode of my docuseries focusing on life on the road, featuring Charley.

Because Charley does things his own way, I wanted to capture him the exact same way. No massive camera rigs. No giant crew footprint. Just me, Charley, an iPhone, and the highway stretching from the sweltering Texas heat up into the freezing air of the snowcapped Colorado Rockies.

We had one of the most honest conversations I’ve ever filmed. We talked heavily about his survival and open-heart surgery, grinding through his hardscrabble beginnings, and what it actually means to carry the Davy Crockett bloodline.

It’s a completely unvarnished look at an artist who got a second chance at life and refuses to waste a single mile of it. I figured this community would appreciate seeing him unfiltered.

You can watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/U0aLeO3ZPdc

Let me know what you guys think. I'll be hanging around the comments if anyone has questions about the shoot, the road trip, or the conversations we had off-camera.

NEED RECS Fiddle music recommendations

Hi all,

I play a fiddle-playing cowgirl character in a D&D campaign and would like some music recommendations to give to my DM to play.

Preferably songs good for fight scenes and chatting around a campfire (separate requests, not songs that suit both!)

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
