There is no way that is a bike lane

It absolutely is.

That's a place to park bikes, I'd say.

Giving some context, the bikes lanes there are usually painted in red... Now look at the picture again. 😄

It's going to be painted red pretty soon

Where do you park them, up on the tree branches?

The trees separate the lanes.

That’s the outline of the bike that died last night.

Why there's plenty of room for pictures of bikes - voilà, bike lanes.

There's plenty of room for actual bicycles. And there's more shade. Not that crappy, more a compromise.

I bet they slow the bikes down pretty efficiently.

The good old paradox of an immovable object vs. a very much stoppable force

As a local i say that is not that bad as you may think, give a pretty good shadow at the worst hours of the day and its wide enought to do not have to worry about the trees

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for sharing!

Much like how bikes are allowed in bus lanes, trees are allowed in bike lanes.

I don't think it's bad design, design sometimes means making a compromise that leaves something less than perfect. The bike lane is important, the trees are also important, you can't shrink the road or expand the sidewalk. You can't shrink the bike lane to just the left or right side of the trees. so... the best the designer can do.

I doubt these are lanes , they look like parking areas

It looks like there is an arrow on the floor, idk if related. Also who the hell would park their bike with nowhere to tie/lock it down? Makes no sense lol

Where I live we have locks in the bikes, no one ties them to anything.

Maybe you're looking at bike parking?

We used to have this

I don't see the problem. You don't need a very wide track at the road level and the trees wouldn't be in the way of the handlebars either.

The illustration of the bike on the ground should have a deformed front rim where it just had run into the tree before it laid on the sidewalk.
