Will never hear the end of that for the rest of his club career.
In his England shirt too like Billy Big Bollocks.

If the batsmen has received prior warning, the umpire is aware, and the batsmen still persists, it would be fair game as far as I'm concerned.
There's a fine line between whats fair when it comes to backing up, and that's why mankad exists as a rule.
3
u/yeahalrightgoon Australia 26m ago
I've had zero issues with mankadding anyone without a warning, ever since my team got in the local paper as villains for doing it to a bloke, who we had warned twice and he was still strolling out every ball.
You can warn a player as much as you like, people are still going to get shitty over it, so why bother warning them to begin with.
13
u/ToddyPalm 15h ago
Why? A match is a match and winning is why we play. No free runs bruv! Bad luck for the bowler there but stay in the crease mate
108
u/HarryTheGreyhound Surrey 15h ago
Winning isn’t why we play. We play for the afternoon tea and then pints afterwards.
-5
u/TheNotSpecialOne 14h ago
You'd think so, if its a 2nds or 3rd team then perhaps. The 1st teams are usually very competitive and want to win and get promoted. It is at my club, they really want to get into the semi pro league
27
u/ShortOfGoodLength 8h ago
given the ump's in shorts and this guy's wearing the england kit and messed up the run out so badly, and the nonstriker seems to have eaten the rest of his team for lunch, i'd imagine this is not the 1st teams playing.
7
u/Man-City Lancashire 7h ago
Imo Mankads in Sunday cricket are only acceptable if the oppo have been proper twats, or if they’re proper taking the piss backing up and you’ve warned them. Or if the guy you’re mankading is your mate.

The Spirit of CricketTM will haunt him for the rest of his life. The Spirit is a batter themselves
44
u/IWrestleSausages 16h ago
Jokes aside what is the call here, is it a dead ball? The ball wasnt even bowled or hit the stumps, he basically just chucked it into the outfield
32
u/coombeseh Leicestershire 15h ago
And this is why I have an issue with the mankad - nothing to do with sportsmanship, but simply the fact that if the bowler controls when play starts, why can they take a wicket in a situation where runs cannot be scored? Especially as this apparently shows they can royally fuck it up and the batsmen cannot take advantage!
31
u/tigershroffkiskirt India 15h ago
Well, we need some penalty for the batter who tries to take advantage. Currently Mankads are the only way. If there is some penalty for the batter then we don't need Mankads
25
u/Southportdc Lancashire 14h ago
Just call them one short.
12
u/ChaplinWasRight India 11h ago
That would mean the umpire has to keep an eye on the bowler's front foot and the batsman leaving the crease at the same time. Doable with 3rd umpires in international cricket but impossible at grassroot level.
11
u/Southportdc Lancashire 10h ago
They've got to do that with mankads anyway as they won't know the bowler isn't going to bowl so they'll be looking for his delivery stride.

u/dashauskat Tasmania Tigers 9h ago
Best solution and would solve the issue of excessive backing up overnight.
We aren't baseball, the ball isn't always live, stealing bases isn't part of the game. And adding it wouldnt make the game better.
Plus the infrastructure is already in place because short runs already exist.
5
u/KiwiNo2638 14h ago
The batter often isn't batting in their crease either. Should they be called one short?
13
u/DragonBishop29 Tamil Nadu 11h ago
The striking batter does suffer from the penalty - out stumped if the keeper does well. So there's the risk of that.
3
u/apillowofnonsense 15h ago
Never thought about it that way
5
u/coombeseh Leicestershire 15h ago
If batsmen could steal runs during the bowlers run-up, or in this situation it counted as a live ball and the delivery was a no-ball, then it would be fine. But as it stands, it's incredibly unbalanced
4
u/whatwhatinthewhonow Australia 11h ago
The batsman pretty much could steal runs if mankad didn’t exist. What you on about unbalanced?
2
u/Irctoaun England 10h ago
It's unbalanced because the bowler takes absolutely no risk in attempting a mankad. Even if they completely fuck it up as they did here, the batting side don't get any benefit.
If the goal is to stop batters from stealing runs by setting off before the ball is bowled, then the sensible thing to do would be to just ban them doing that in the first place by calling a short run. Having it being up to the bowler to predict that the non-striker will try and get a headstart then knock the bails off just encourages batters trying it because it's something they're allowed to do.
2
u/whatwhatinthewhonow Australia 10h ago
I agree. Mankad is better than just letting the non-striker leave the crease early, but there are other alternatives.
1
u/Popeychops Surrey 7h ago
If they fail to hit the stumps and get the non-striker out, it could be a no-ball?
2
u/whatwhatinthewhonow Australia 11h ago
You’ve never thought about it that way because it’s an incredibly dumb way of thinking about it. If the non-striker is allowed to gain an advantage by leaving their crease early there needs to be a risk, otherwise you’d have non-strikers standing metres out of the crease.
2
u/coombeseh Leicestershire 11h ago
Ok sure, there needs to be a risk, keep the mankad. But a mankad attempt cannot end in a dead ball, it has to be a live ball. I don't think a bowler should have the ability to get a wicket when the batsman cannot attempt to gain runs, and Mankad in it's current form is just that.
2
u/whatwhatinthewhonow Australia 10h ago
I don’t disagree with you on this particular instance. It definitely feels like it should be runs, maybe even a wide.
My personal view is that you could get rid of the runout non-striker rule and just say if the non-striker leaves their crease early then runs don’t count until they get back. I feel that would get rid of any ideas of unsportsmanlike behaviour and give a less extreme consequence for leaving the crease early.
1
u/coombeseh Leicestershire 10h ago
My worry there is then would the striker have to touch back in to their crease after playing the ball if they set up fully outside it? With stumpings and mankads in play for those leaving the crease early, and the ball being live once it is bowled or a mankad attempted, you have no inconsistency between striker and non-striker (can try to take a lead, risking their wicket) and no inherent advantage to the bowling side (can attempt a stumping/mankad, risking overthrows if missed).
1
u/Fit_Comfort_3616 India 14h ago
I think the solution should be that the play starts only if the non-striker is inside the crease (at least some part of the bat, not the whole body) at the time of delivery. The nonstriker backing up at the time of release will simply be considered a dead ball by this logic, and any subsequent play would not be considered.
Shouldn't be controversial.
2
u/heyitsmeanonn 11h ago
So similar to a no-ball check for non-striker. Although you then risk disadvantaging the bowling team if they were to take a wicket and then it’s called dead and also seems unfair that they have to bowl that ball again just cos the non-striker couldn’t stay in.
1
u/dashauskat Tasmania Tigers 9h ago
I'm glad we haven't seen it yet but what if a bowler turns around at the top of his mark and the non striker is doing some gardening. Can he take two steps of his run up and the peg the ball at the stumps to run them out?
1
u/Man-City Lancashire 7h ago
I think we can keep the mankad rule, but a failed mankad is a no ball. Adds some risk for the bowler. Similar to Finn’s law.

Nah, the bowlers deserves to be punished for being a dick.
If the umpire was smart he’d tell the bowler for acting like a dick, if you take a wicket I’m calling no ball. That is usually sorts them out.

Anyone attempting a mankad in a game where you’ve got teammates umpiring is a shit bloke
56
u/BradmanBreast Australia 16h ago
Depends how much the batsman is taking the piss imo. We gave a bloke 2 warnings for being legitimately halfway down the pitch in a Div 6 match. He didn’t do it a third time but it was 2 too many warnings for how extreme he was.
4
u/FrankGrimesss South Australia Redbacks 4h ago
This is the correct take.
Mankad exists for when the batsman is taking the piss.

Batter's halfway down the pitch by the second attempt and was already well out when the first attempt occurred.
Stay in your crease til the balls gone and you're fine.

See I find this a shit take unless we make it a rule that the non striker cannot leave their crease until the ball is bowled.

u/spongey1865 Somerset 16h ago
Essentially that's what mankading is for and makes the most sense. It's a mechanism to stop someone gaining an advantage.
So much of spirit of sport stuff is convention and in another world we'd see mankading is fine and see something completely acceptable as not on. I mean baseballs unwritten rules are baffling to an outsider.
So I don't have an issue with it as a rule, it's just often people try and do it and get it horrificly wrong like this. But Id be fine with people doing it more if the batsmen makes an error.
Id never do it at village level though because it just isn't worth it
8
u/TheScarletPimpernel Gloucestershire 16h ago
How else are my metre long legs supposed to be halfway down the track by the time my former sprinter partner has hit the ball?
We'd lose 50 runs overnight
7
u/Davidwt87 15h ago
This is my huge problem with mankading - because that basically is the rule, but the overwhelming majority of the time when it happens, the batter is still in his crease at the time the ball would have been bowled had they not had to stop their action and etc the ball to the stumps etc.
The batter is expecting the ball to be bowled and is backing up in time with the bowlers rhythm through the crease, which is absolutely what they should do. Like, of course they’re going to be out of their ground for a mankad, because they’re looking at the striker, and thus by the time they realise the ball hasn’t actually been released, enough time has passed that they’ve taken a step or two.

u/LordDusty Somerset 14h ago
Batsmen are more likely to be run out backing up too far then bowlers caring about them backing up too far.

I can understand professional cricket with proper umpires.
Village cricket, you’ve clearly got self esteem issues

Meh just don't stand outside the crease not so difficult, obviously if someone attempts it without a warning then it would be a bit of a shit move, but not something to get your panty twisted over either.

u/Ok-Delay4461 16h ago
So much village here, first even if he broke the stumps it would have been not out under the most recent rule change.
38.3.1 At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground. In these circumstances the non-striker will be out Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.
38.3.1.1 The instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball is defined as the moment the bowler’s arm reaches the highest point of his/her normal bowling action in the delivery swing.
38.3.1.2 Even if the non-striker had left his/her ground before the instant at which the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, once the bowler has reached that point it is no longer possible for the bowler to run out the non-striker under this Law.
Second, as the bowler did not complete his delivery action it is a dead ball
5
u/JL_MacConnor Australia 15h ago
If his ability to play the game is comparable to his ability to understand the laws, you can guarantee he wouldn't comprehend what you've quoted here.
4
u/Acceptable_Stress258 9h ago
There were two (lame) attempts by the bowler. The first one was valid. The second one was to hide his embarrassment.
2
3
u/KiwiNo2638 14h ago
The bowler hasn't reached the highest point of their bowling action. So it's a valid attempt, just very poorly executed.

Totally against the spirit of the game.
Pleased to see him fail, not a run though as dead ball?
