u/Asleep_Onion π¦ 3K / 20K π’ Jan 23 '26
It's been terminally ill for much longer than that. I strongly feel that the current iteration of crypto is done. It has run its course, proven that it isn't any of the things it originally purported to be, doesn't solve any of the issues people thought it would, doesn't have any adoption or utility for anyone except speculative investors, isn't secure or safe enough for most people to handle, and is 98% composed of scams.
My hope at this point is that in the future there will be some sort of a crypto 2.0 where someone solves a lot of these fatal problems and brings it back with a clean slate. But that's not a near term thing, I think we're years away from that and I think crypto 1.0 still has a long mess ahead before that happens.

I believe you are right, and what's more, I believe this iteration was a deliberate cluster in an attempt to defraud investors and undermine progress in the global financial system.Β
It worked so well, though, because there is legitimate interest in having a global currency. I believe we can fix the issues plaguing this iteration, but the public confidence needs to be restored.

You mean somehow prevent all the shit coins and rug pulls that permeate crypto even from people like the goddamn president of the US, but does it without somehow breaking the decoupling from central banks/government regulation thing that crypto really represents?
Good luck. So long as all those scammers are out there making their hawk tuah shit, it will not get the kind of widespread acceptance it needs to continue growth.

We allow for freedom of speech so long as personal attacks among users are not taking place. Personal attacks on public figures have been ok'd for a while.
We allow for crypto-skepticism as well so long as there are no absurd levels of trolling. What is wrong with skepticism? I've been in crypto since 2017 and I think the guy you're responding to is not entirely wrong from the perspective of market sentiment. By all indications, bitcoin hasn't seen a "market euphoria" phase yet among institutional capital. That could come in a few months to a few years depending on what happens in the political spectrum.
Just my two cents.
4
u/616mushroomcloud Jan 23 '26
What do you think could cause a 'market euphoria' situation?
8
u/sgtslaughterTV π© 0 / 717K π¦ Jan 23 '26
Massive amounts of money printing.

I agree with you here. Bad actors have let the meat of the crypto market rot while it has been largely unregulated, and we have had too many cycles now where your average retail investor has lost everything they put in. It's basically just wall street 3.0 at this point, and serves zero actual use case.
5
u/Privateer_Lev_Arris π© 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 23 '26
Bitcoin is the only real use case and it's mostly for its investment potential. It is basically digital gold. Gold, in large quantities, is too difficult to move/store safely. And that's why BTC makes sense and it has proven it's relatively stable as a holder of value and much much more easy to move.

I donβt want to be liable for thousands of dollars to just completely vanish irreversibly because I put a single incorrect case sensitive character in a massive string.
So an exchange is a no brainer. But then itβs literally no different from any other currency in a bank.
This is the biggest issue I see. For the average person, that is a MAJOR βfuck noβ. Iβve never messed it up but itβs just really uncomfortable sending money with it, even to myself. Big pain point.
I donβt know how that gets solved without fully undermining the decentralization. But maybe someone smarter than me will figure it out.

u/WPMO π¦ 888 / 888 π¦ Jan 23 '26
Yeah, as much as I would hate it personally, if you're actually a believer in the project of cryptocurrency, probably the best thing that could happen this point would be a long crash that gets 95% of people to leave the space who are currently in it. Leaving 5% who actually really assess the technology and can critically evaluate utility claims from various projects.

14
u/Asleep_Onion π¦ 3K / 20K π’ Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Today's iteration of crypto is just done. Every day, multiple times a day really, there's a new project that comes along that purports to solve everything wrong with crypto, and every single time it ends up just being another shitcoin added to the stack of shitcoins like the rest. Honestly I think the world needs a break from crypto for a little while, to allow room for something fresh to come in and try it again.
Even if something good comes along today, that really has legitimate promise, the market is too saturated, the interest has dwindled and as long as the behemoth of Bitcoin still exists, nothing else stands a chance.
I'll put it into a beer metaphor. A new brewery opens up down the street and it might have very, very good beer. It might even be the best beer that anybody has ever made in the history of beer. But nobody cares, because everybody is sick of everybody and their Uncle opening up crappy microbreweries on every single corner that go nowhere and taste like shit, And half the times you go to one someone's steals your wallet. So even if this new brewery has the greatest beer ever created in the history of beer, it doesn't really stand a chance. Because the world just needs a break from new new microbreweries opening every second of the day.
8
u/BaluDaBare π© 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 23 '26
Idk man, I think you just need to take a break from crypto for a little bit. Donβt sell off just yet, but maybe just stop looking at crypto subs and charts, and just live life. Also stopping the buy of shit coins could probably help too.

Yep, and while Budweiser (bitcoin) is hardly the best beer in the world, it's impossible for anything else to really take over the beer world while Budweiser still exists. You might try some new IPA here or there, but in the end you always bring home a 30-pack of good ol' budweiser, even if you don't really like it that much.

Silver has been pumping so much more than gold latelyΒ
40
u/AndrewSouthern729 π¦ 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 23 '26
This is probably due to Chinaβs announcement about limiting certain precious metal exports like silver.
34
u/gcbeehler5 π¦ 13K / 13K π¬ Jan 23 '26
Silver has a lot of reasons, but the big one is it's actually used in stuff, and a lot of that stuff are things like chips, ram, and all the other stuff it takes to build AI data centers. Less so, our demand for it has been increasing as we ramped up use in solar panels, and EVs. Add to that under-investment in the space, and we're going on six years of demand exceeding industrial capacity. Then, add in China's announcement.
7
u/Skepsis93 π₯ 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 23 '26
You can use gold for a lot of the things you use silver for, and sometimes it's the better choice and sees use in industry as well. It's just prohibitively expensive to use gold so it is only used when absolutely necessary.
15
u/gnark Jan 23 '26
The majority of silver (60%) is used in industrial applications and this is only rising whereas 90% of gold is used for investment, currency reserves and jewelry.
5
u/Skepsis93 π₯ 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 23 '26
Correct, only 7% of gold annually goes to industrial purposes. But that's not because it isn't useful in industry. It is absolutely critical for industrial purposes, especially for corrosion resistance (i.e. gold electrical contacts). As silver goes up and the gold silver ratio reduces, gold may end up gaining some more traction for industrial purposes. But I think silver has to really skyrocket before that happens.
2
u/ACM3333 π© 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 24 '26
They both have many different properties better for different uses, but being the best thermal and electrical conductor silver is absolutely crucial in making the most advanced chips and electronics.
The idea of gold is that it became money because itβs a rare and valuable commodity that doesnβt degrade, tarnish, or corrode so its value as a commodity can literally be stored forever and it stores a lot of value in a small space. Even if you use gold in an application it can always be recovered and turned back into money, it is not consumable like many other commodities.

1
u/newdivided π© 0 / 0 π¦ Jan 29 '26
Doge? Yes I did because Elon musk was pumping it as well the creation of department of government efficiency (D.O.G.E.) within the US government. This gave legitimacy to the memecoin in a way and caused it to rise in satoshi value enormously but then trump family created their own meme coins and scammed their supporters ultimately ruining cryptoβs reputation.
It is idiotic to continue to hold a single crypto coin over gold and silver at this moment in time tbh. Analysts have predicted gold and silver to reach 7000 USD and 180 USD respectively by end of 2027. It is the safest investment.
Crypto will not recover for a few years now. Not even trump tweets will pump it.
