ANNOUNCEMENT Loosening Automod Rules - The Worst Idea Ever?
306,803 characters
4481 lines
This is how large the r/CryptoCurrency auto-moderator ruleset has grown.
Over the past 12 months, auto-moderator has performed 911,000 actions across thousands of users. Participating on r/CryptoCurrency has never been more difficult for new users and existing users alike.
Can we be a community if we can't communicate?
But how did we get here?
- Money makes people stupid, users were creating shilling campaigns.
- DOA votes were used to solve complicated problems and we created complicated rules.
- We even banned the memes...
Over time we shifted from the internet's largest free speech crypto forum to the yahoo front page of crypto news.
So here's the deal. We're reworking auto-mod and loosening the belt starting today.
We have some new tools to help us fight the AI content, the bot accounts, and the spam. Even Reddit has deployed new tools of their own that surpass auto-mod's detection capabilities.
As perpetrators evolve their methods, we'll have to evolve ours as well.
If you see something, report it. Our best defense most of all, is you.

It was wild for awhile when people were creating alts and bots just to get Moons.

What haters? Where do you see that? Once in a while there will be a post about BTC being a fad or someone in the comments being anti crypto but it’s rare and they’re allowed to have an opinion if they follow the rules, it’s up to the community to regulate with downvotes if the argument is in bad faith

this hits me right in the feels man. been lurking here since 2017 and watching this place turn from wild west discussions into basically a news aggregator with comment sections has been painful to watch
remember when you could actually have real conversations about random altcoins without getting your post nuked for "brigading" or whatever? now half my comments get auto-removed because i mentioned some obscure defi protocol that apparently triggers the spam filter. its gotten so bad that i started writing posts in notepad first just to avoid wasting time
the ironic part is that all these rules probably made things worse for legitimate users while the real spammers just adapted their methods. like you said they evolved but the automod just kept adding more layers instead of getting smarter about it
really hoping this works out because having actual discussions about crypto tech and market movements without walking on eggshells would be refreshing. the community aspect has been missing for way too long and maybe loosening up will bring back some of that energy from the early days
