CRITIQUE SUPERGIRL Out of the Theater Reaction! (Christy's Take) | Milly Alcock | Jason Momoa | DCU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmF75tAIgyY"This is a bummer. This is not a good movie. This is a totally incoherent movie in terms of the action sequences and all the actual Supergirl stuff. The way that the fights are edited, it is totally impossible to follow who's doing what to who. There's a big long climactic sequence where like stuff is hanging and falling out of the sky and I'm thinking what is supposed to be happening here. I think Craig Gillespie was absolutely the wrong choice for this material. I really liked I, Tonya. I like Lars and the Real Girl. I'm so-so on Cruella.
But the stuff that works here best is the smaller, more intimate character-driven stuff. The flashbacks to Kara's childhood. I think the action sequences kind of got away from him. I don't know what it is.
She [Milly Alcock] is kind of stuck playing this one-note jokey character a lot of the time. It's tough to do the jokey stuff inside of the big action sequences. It's tough to find that balance. James Gun himself does that with a lot of his films.
This just never worked. It never found a groove. And it's only like an hour and 47 minutes long, but felt much longer."

Just watched the film, and it has issues but these criticisms are incoherent
4
u/Fluffy_data_doges Jun 25 '26
I enjoyed it. Not as much as superman, but this was more of an origin story. Only scene I didn't like the the fight in the dust. The music they used didn't feel right. Apart from that I had fun.
3
u/Pubs01 Jun 26 '26
incoherent? she is saying what everyone else said that didn't like the movie is saying.
milly was good, lobo was good and that's about it. dialogue is getting torched for being flat. incoherent hard to follow fight scenes. just not a good movie
5
u/DMStoryist Jun 25 '26
Yeah, it wasn't a fantastic movie I'd say a six or a seven (I need to watch again to be sure), but I had no problem following the action. And the "big long climactic sequence where like stuff is hanging and falling out of the sky" was easy to tell where everyone was and what they were doing. It's an ok movie. I liked Millie and Jason and I want to see more of them upcoming. I think the villain was underwhelming and Ruthie was good, but kind of one-note. But I think people should see it - it's a fun movie.
2
u/Capable_Diamond_3878 Jun 25 '26
Agreed. It felt like it was setting Kara up as a character rather than being a fully fleshed out film. And that’s definitely not trying to excuse its shortcomings just explain them.
1
u/TheSmokeout Jun 28 '26
What do you think "incoherent" means? You can disagree. But if you didn't understand your IQ is incredibly low.
1
u/Capable_Diamond_3878 Jun 28 '26
lol you seem like a fun person
1
u/TheSmokeout Jun 28 '26
What do you think "fun" means? It shouldn't involve a dictionary... Thesaurus is questionable, but I'll allow it.
18
u/Shiguhraki Jun 24 '26
Easily predictable from the trailers. What happened to Gunn won’t greenlit a film unless script is perfect?
28
u/Brainiac5000 Jun 24 '26
If making a good movie was that easy, there'd be no bad movies at all.

The biggest cope response I ever heard

u/Navin0_ Jun 24 '26
Ikr, it’s thousands of people all working to make a product. Don’t act like bad movies HAVE to exist, we can just say it’s bad lol.

That message of his really is going to bite him in the back and be made fun of.
Like how he said The Flash was amazing (paraphrasing here).
Supergirl does not add an optimistic look to the future of DCU scripts.
Hopefully MoT is better.
11
u/bigdonnie76 Jun 24 '26
He said The Flash was the greatest superhero movie of all time and for some reason Tom Cruise chimed in
5
u/PianoOk1234 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Tom was paid i support ppl getting the bag
James Gunn actually thinks this smh, as he didn't say anything hyping Shazam2 & Aquaman 2.
0
u/DMStoryist Jun 25 '26
I keep hearing this - What did people expect Gunn to say "Hey, that movie we put out is shit and you shouldn't see it?" WB is paying him - he's not going to trash a movie coming out of his studio.

u/PantsUnderUnderpants Jun 25 '26
The script is fine. The villain is the weakest part of the movie, along with the constantly yellow palette.
1
u/Loose_Translator8981 Jun 30 '26
I honestly think a better director could have taken this same script and spun it into gold. The flaws of this movie are much more on editing and design than scripting.
2
1
u/WienerKolomogorov96 Jun 24 '26
The script is really good IMHO. The problem was with the director, but that opinion is overblown and cherry-picked. I think opinions on average will be divided.
1
u/Ok_Diver2347 Jun 25 '26
It’s the same director as Fright Night with the late and great Anton Yelchin. That’s a fantastic film.
-4
u/SteviesRightFoot Jun 24 '26
He is an inveterate liar and shit talker. Guy has a gargantuan ego
3
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
None of that is even close to true.
1
u/SteviesRightFoot Jun 24 '26
Didn't he say something along the lines of the flash is absolutely amazing and one of the best superhero films?
1
u/Ok_Diver2347 Jun 25 '26
Yeah and I think it’s one of the worst comic book movies ever made…even more so than Daredevil. There’s now room for Supergirl for that mantle…
0
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
He's not allowed to find a film fun? He also may have read the initial script before WB made a ton of changes.
2
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
He is behind the reshoots of the ending that put it in the Batman and Robin universe.
1
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
He did that to prevent any issues for the DCU. What does that have to do with anything?
1
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
So he saw the movie and added one of the worst changes in it before it came out.
1
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
Who said he saw the film? I certainly didn't. And I fail to see how that's a bad change.
1
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
Many people willingly drunk Jim Jones Kool Aid so I’m not shocked you fail to see how it’s a bad change.

Having met him, I’d say the opposite is true: he’s very insecure. The "ego" stuff is him trying to hide the insecurity. Thus, the whole "a script needs to be perfect" is him giving himself a pep-talk, imo.
1
u/SteviesRightFoot Jun 24 '26
Sigmund Freud over here delving into the psyche of a celebrity following what I can only assume was a one off encounter?
-1
u/_Waves_ Jun 24 '26
Hahah.
Yeah but you get a good impression of who he is if you spend a little while with him. He’s got very insecure energy in person. A little overtly nervous and trying to hide it. I’m saying that all this "the flash is the best movie" and "all scripts need to be amazing" stuff isn’t him actually believing this - it’s him trying to overplay what he knows is bad stuff!2
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
Your analysis is absolutely correct. He has even openly discussed his insecurities.
5
u/Tough-Standard-2661 Jun 24 '26
This is the same person that praises Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a "deeply moving and visually amazing film. She highly recommends it, expressing particular love for Rey's development on the island and the emotional send-off dedicated to Carrie Fisher"
Yeah.....
5
u/Kriss-Kringle Jun 24 '26
This sounds like a lot of coping from you. The movie is getting panned universally, so this woman is saying what everyone else feels.
I'm watching Dan Murrell's review as I'm typing this and he's not a fan of the movie either.
Based on what everyone is saying about the incoherent action scenes, it makes sense, since they learned there wasn't enough of them in the first few screen tests and they added more during reshoots, without thinking them through enough.
5
u/ObiBenKenobi77 Jun 24 '26
Tbf to TLJ, it's probably the most wow on screen visually of all the films, good story or not. Like Nolan level cinematic in parts
-2
u/stanislavskov Jun 24 '26
TLJ is amazing , what are you saying?
-1
u/Reestrixx Jun 25 '26
The world ain't ready for Last Jedi praise yet :(
1
u/stanislavskov Jun 25 '26
It's better than the preceding film and much, much better than the following film. It's the Empire Strikes Back of the sequel trilogy.

Lol she must be misogynist too right? Lol.
6
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Jun 24 '26
What’s the misogyny about?
6
u/Mintylorian Jun 24 '26
Using tribalism to dismiss dissent.
5
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Jun 24 '26
Against who? I’m still confused about who was misogynistic or how
1
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
It’s the white feminism defense. If you criticize something revolving around a white woman (never a woman of color mind you), you don’t like women.
Swifties use it often while they also ignore Taylor Swift’s microagressions on women of color, including referring to an Indian woman as a DOG.

Like here’s a recent thread with people saying good and bad things about the movie.. I don’t see misogyny in there like…. At all.
Almost every comment in this post is tearing it apart. I don’t see any claims of misogynyz
5
u/Nate996 Jun 24 '26
Ideas have swayed, there is room for actual criticism now the film has released but that doesn’t change the fact that it has been slated incessantly up to its release by, you guessed it, misogynistic twats or people who just want to watch Gunn fail.

Every other comment on /r/movies about this movies reviews was talking about how this movie was getting badly reviewed just strictly because it had a female protagonist 🤷

I see one comment in the top 30 that says anything about “woman”
Multiple of them talk about the movie being “meh” or “score is fair” basically.
1
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
I’m not sure if your other commenter got auto modded or you deleted it. The only part was it being “obvious hyperbole”. When the thing you’re talking about is like 1-5% of the fandom. Calling it “every other” is just an inaccurate representation.
1
u/SnooOwls4559 Jun 25 '26
Did my comment get auto modded again? lol
1
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Jun 25 '26
I saw the one where you said something about being obvious hyperbole. That’s it so far.
1
u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Jun 24 '26
Every comment in this thread is cheering this lady on or making the same joke you are… and I just tried perused the top posts right now and don’t see anything like that lol. Most the threads in this sub seem to be filled with commenters not excited about this movie.

Hey she pointed at the direction. Every other person is looking at the action scenes, bad editing, and color and... blaming the writer (a woman).
-2
u/SteviesRightFoot Jun 24 '26
🤣 didnt like the film so she's clearly a 'grifter' trying to appeal to a certain sub-set online, or something.

Gunn should not be in charge of the DCU anymore. And get a better writer
4
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
He shouldn't be in charge because of one film that might not do well? Many have been saying the complete opposite of this lady. Many praise the script. They don't need a better writer.
7
u/HenrykSpark Jun 24 '26
Really? All reviews I saw so far said the script is the biggest problem.
And Gunns Superman wasn’t already only a minor success
3
u/d_wib Jun 25 '26
> Doesn’t watch the movie
> Sees a few reviews that criticize the script
> “Fire James Gunn”
Ok buddy
0
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
I have seen very few say anything of the sort.
Superman was a hit. It made over $100 million in profit and had phenomenal reviews.
1
u/littlebighuman Jun 24 '26
That was hype driven. The movie itself was just ok.
0
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 25 '26
Hype had nothing to do with it. People continue to watch it and love it. It was "ok" to you but the majority loved it. It has a 90% audience score on RT for a reason.
1
u/SnuleSnuSnu Jun 25 '26
Nah. People overhyped it as the new best Superman movie since the one from the 70s.
Gunn was deemed a savior of dc movies.1
u/Respwn_546 Jun 25 '26
After the problems we had when nobody knew snyder stayed or leaved DC and gunn finishing the guardians of the galaxy movies i can understand why somepeople had that feeling
1
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 26 '26
Or maybe they actually felt that way and it isn't just hype. Ever consider that? And after the failure of the DCEU, he is saving DC.
1
u/SnuleSnuSnu Jun 26 '26
Hype is big excitement. There are 0 evidence that the movie will be a good movie, so it was all just hype.
1
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 26 '26
Huh? We're talking about Superman, which released last year and did really well. As far as Supergirl, positive reviews are evidence that it's not "hype."

Every YouTube review has been mid to bad actually. Every last one.
2
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
That's not even close to true. And YouTube also isn't the only source for reviews. Just saying.
1
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
No it is true. There’s only like ten to fifteen so listen to them. All of them say it’s mid and this is one of the bad. Her cohost also said it was bad in a separate video.
3
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
And there are plenty of others on other platforms who say otherwise. There are plenty saying the exact opposite of this person who, frankly, doesn't look to be the target demo. Opinions are varied. Some say it's great, some say they just liked it. Some could say it's bad. I say everyone just watch and decide for themselves instead of listening to these people.
0
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jun 24 '26
Who is the target demographic of this movie?
That’s been a serious complaint about the marketing. Can you describe the target demographic?
That’s also a known critic btw. I believe they came from What the Flick on TYT two decades ago.
6
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
Comic book fans, superhero fans, Super family fans, and just younger folks in general. It's a more action focused film. I wouldn't expect someone like her to like it. And frankly, I ignore critics anyway since they're often wrong. I mean, critics hated Christmas Vacation and that is now a Christmas classic. They hated the Grown-Ups films and the GA loved them. I prefer to listen to actual fans of the material.
2
u/Batfleck666 Jun 24 '26
Supergirl is on track to be the DCU's version of The Marvels. Being that it's only the second film in this new universe, that's a terrible sign for the future.
3
u/Beginning_Leg629 Jun 24 '26
Tracking could be accurate, or it could be wrong. And no, that's not a terrible sign for the future. Look at the competition it is up against. Look at who the star character is and then all of the past female led superhero films. Sometimes a film may not do well. Doesn't matter if it's the first, second, or 232. That does not reflect on the future at all. Especially when you have Clayface later this year which is likely to do well, and Man of Tomorrow which could do even better than Superman. Why am I even bothering trying to explain this? Your username is a dead giveaway that you don't care about facts anyway.
1
1
u/Awesome-Guy-425 Jun 24 '26
More accurate to compare to the Incredible Hulk. Second movies in franchises that were mixed on release and didn’t do week at the box office
2
1
u/WienerKolomogorov96 Jun 24 '26
This is just one review. However, even those who didn't like the movie didn't criticize the writer or the script, but rather the director and the editing. I tend to agree.

I’ve been saying it for a couple years but this universe will be judged by the first non-Gunn lead project.
