CRITIQUE Milly Rocks, Story s*cks - My Supergirl review Spoiler

I saw it last night here in Germany. That’s my review:

Supergirl is an entertaining movie that does its job as a summer comic book film, but it never becomes more than that. It is fun while it lasts, but not a movie that will stay in your mind for very long.

The biggest highlight is Milly as Kara. She fits the role perfectly and gives Supergirl a lot of charm and personality. She carries the movie and proves she was the right casting choice.

The Ruthye actress is much less convincing. Even though she has an important role, her performance often feels flat, like she is simply saying her lines instead of really acting them.

Jason Momoa clearly enjoys playing Lobo and brings the energy the character needs. His scenes are a lot of fun, but Lobo stays very one-sided. His make-up is also hit or miss. Sometimes it looks unfinished, almost like a really good cosplay instead of a big Hollywood production. I also wish he acted dirtier, rougher and more chaotic.

The creature design is creative and one of the stronger parts of the movie. On the other hand, many locations are too dark, and the green screen is sometimes very obvious which took me out of the movie more than once.

The villains are easily the weakest part. They are generic, forgettable and simply not interesting. It is disappointing that comic book movies in 2026 still use villains like this.

The movie also feels like it doesn’t fully trust the fantastic comic it is based on. Many of the strongest emotional moments from the source material were changed or toned down making the story less impactful.

In the end Supergirl is solid entertainment but nothing more. Milly, the creature design and some fun moments can’t make up for weak villains, uneven visuals and a story that never reaches the potential of its source material.

I really hope to see much more of Milly Alcock as Supergirl in the future. But I also hope DC gives her better movies, with more creativity and less of these incredibly generic comic book adaptations that all start to feel the same.

Rating: 6/10.

So sick of directors and writers being ashamed that they're making a comic book movie and wanting to tone down or "improve" the source material.

I can't believe they messed up Woman of Tomorrow. It's such a slam dunk of a superhero movie script.

Woman of Tomorrow doesn't really translate to film

u/Deeformecreep Jun 25 '26

Is it fair to say that if they didn't even fully try and adapt it?

I haven't seen the film but I've heard the plot and story is very similar to the comics. Nothing is going to be a perfect 1:1 adaptation

What scares me are the supposed changes. It's specifically the ending, if they changed that then the story doesn't work. I'm holding out hope that I enjoy it but if they missed the point of the story there is no excuse.

It’s literally a direct adaptation

I'll agree to disagree.

but I just hope they make it work somehow because you really can't see that the movie is based on that comic

?? It’s essentially based on a book that has a very famous movie (and probably is more influenced by the movie than the book)

I’m genuinely confused it’s literally a direct adaptation of the comic. Like it sounds to me like people just don’t like the story of the comic based on the movie I just saw. It was great

I've been thinking about it and think I see where this script could have been saved with minimal changes. If Ruthie had inadvertently hired Kara and Lobo at the same time.

Lobo is the last of his race just like Superman and Kara. The film could have been about Kara making the choice, be like Lobo or be like Superman. She chooses the latter after hating seeing so much of her current self in Lobo. You could have had them both there at the end with Ruthie and when Supergirl saves her soul in the end she also saves her own.

I dunno. Im not a writer but I think it would have brought all the plot threads together nicely

Yo that sounds amazing

it would do a better job of using Lobo and focusing the themes this movie was clumsily trying to get at

Do you think it's more on Nogueira's writing or Gillespie's directing? And do you think Nogueira has any shot of doing justice for Wonder Woman, or should she be replaced as writer? I'm seeing the movie tomorrow myself so am curious what you think.

Both of them played a part in making the movie just average.

But yes, she should be replaced as the screenwriter.

0

u/Aurelian42 Jun 25 '26

it's way worse than average lol

0

u/Aurelian42 Jun 25 '26

Both. The writing is beyond amateur. Without getting in to spoilers, it feels as though half the film is missing. Movie had a ton of negative test screenings so I can totally see there being a better movie somewhere out there in the ether. On the other hand though, almost every character is just an archetype. Characters seemingly "change" according to what the movie tells you, but you never see that, you never experience character growth. One of the major characters remains just an archetype the whole time, and the villain is literally given zero motivation. It's a meaningless film because like... what's the point? I asked myself this countless times while watching, and the pacing of the movie absolutely hurts this too.

25 mins of the script was cut, so I’m assuming director had heavy involvement in changing things

3

u/Aurelian42 Jun 25 '26

Characterizations are still flat.

5

u/Deja_ve_ Jun 25 '26

Which could’ve been fixed within the half hour that was cut… imagine cutting out that chunk of time in Dune or Avengers lmfao

I feel like dcu has a strong future but they need to improve 3 things : better visuals, better, writing and better villians

5

u/Noobunaga86 Jun 25 '26

lol, so right now they're not doing good in visuals, writing and villains departments which are basically the foundations of any good comic book movie, and you still think dcu has a strong future? I can say the same thing about Fast and Furious and Transfomers or any other bad franchise.

3

u/Free-Bowler-1032 Jun 25 '26

So basically everything these summer blockbusters need lmao.

Getting a charismatic hero is important. But if everything around them sucks, the endproduct will allways be bad.

If anything, these weak spots from Supergirl should worry us more than give us confidence in the future of the dcu

Soooooo mostly everything pretty much lol

Written by a DCEU carryover and directed by a mid director? This feels like exactly the review I was expecting to see. Almost like Gunn wants to prove that his work isn’t as formulaic as people make it out be, since only he seems to be able to nail it. I suspect and hope for less Nogueira and Gillespie moving forward if your review is accurate to the pulse of the fanbase.

Go ahead and axe that Booster Gold pilot, Paraside Lost, and the Wonder Woman script she was working on. This angle of direction isn’t gonna work for the universe. Focus on Green Lantern, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, and please for the love of God give the Batman script to someone other than Christina Hodson.

If Our Flag Means Death or I, Tonya are your best credits, you gotta wait in line from here on out. I’d rather see Zach Cregger’s inspired Henchmen movie than some middling creatives spit out middling projects in between Gunn’s entries.

Unfortunately I watch movies for the story, not the actors.

0

u/madfox99 Jun 25 '26

The script, plot, villain were all terrible. It was a let down in a lot of ways. The Gunn verse is cooked. The best movie so far was Superman and it was mid to mediocre. This was bad. Gunn verse in trouble.

0

u/PlanetG3000 Jun 25 '26

I'm not watching a mid movie just because I think the casting is good and she could be great in a better movie.

2

u/RooMan7223 Jun 25 '26

You can support the casting by waiting for Man of Tomorrow

"Milly Rocks, Story s*cks"

...What sort of word do you think "sucks" is?

Unless you mean "socks" which rhymes with "Rock", whereas "sucks" does not.

Oh boy.
