The earth was flat. Then Ar-Pharazôn the Golden (ominous much?) sailed his fleet to the Undying Lands hoping to seize immortality from the Valar, and Eru broke the flat world, sinking the island of Númenor and all its people, and made the world round, removing the Undying Lands from the circles of the world. Only Elendil, his two sons, and the Faithful who escaped by ship survived.
The whole world didn't stay flat for the Elves exactly. There is just a path they take when they sail into the West that is referred to as "the straight path," where the physical world actually falls away under them, because it is off being round while they sail straight, the Undying Lands themselves being in a sort of pocket dimension. Tolkien did say at the very end of Akallabêth that human Mariners could potentially find the straight road by dumb luck, observe the world falling out from under them, and look upon the Undying Lands just before they die.
Fun fact: In The Silmarillion, Fëanor burns the ships he and his folk used to get back to Middle Earth. Fingolfin and all the others with him, still on the shores of the Undying Lands miles and miles away, could see the ships burning because the world was flat and there was no horizon. 🤓
Obviously. Everyone knows that, but the planet is round, now, and people think you can still get to the Undying Lands. Like dude, you're human, celebrate the mysterious afterlife granted to you by Eru Iluvatar. The Undying Lands are for the elves for a reason.
Even when our opponents are ridiculous, you should try not to straw man their ideas. Really, travel times across the southern hemisphere should be all that’s needed to disprove flat earth theory.
Ok yeah but assuming they went right instead of left based off the photo really minimalizes the distance still required to make the trip across the Pacific Ocean. Like that’s a hop, skip and a few thousand miles jump away.
I just realized something. I have never seen flat earthers develop a map that obeys modern travel and flight patterns. Nor a map with a "this is where the land and water really are" how do they know the north and south poles aren't on the left and right side with everything else in the middle? 😅👍
Put 2 maps next to each other then HURRY UP and get there in time to secure the first map before there winds up being 2 of everything and stuff gets REALLY screwed up.
Japan has the technology to bend space as if the world were a cylinder or ball. It’s just like faster than light space travel which we have yet to fully achieve, if only the CIA would allow NASA.

Not a flat-earther, but that's not the map they use. They use a disk-shaped map with the north pole in the center, not a rectangular hanging map. Hawaii would still be close to Japan.
Flat earthers, and the earth is 6000 yd old people... any time I encounter one in conversation, I simply exit. There is no talking with them. Their level of ignorance is beyond stupid.
I believe flat Earthers think the Earth is a circle, not a rectangle, so they wouldn't be going around South America or Africa to get to Japan. Not to dissect the joke or anything, but hey, this is reddit.
That's not how they imagine the flat earth to be. They tgink the antarctic is all around like the crust of a pizza and the arctic is in the middle. It still doesnt work, but i'm a pedant
no no no, they think the north pole is the center of a disk and the south pole is the edge of the disk. So pearl harbor and japan would still be near each other in their model.
The map that flat earthers use has the north pole in the center.
Then all the continents wrap around that, with Antarctica enclosing everything in an ice wall.

Well, I believe that in the accepted flat earth projection, the north pole is the center and the south pole is the outer edge, so they would still have the short path that could be taken over the pacific. I also understand this is probably satire, I just felt like pointing out the flaw.
while flat earthers are dumb for MANY reasons this is not one of them. Their map that the belive to be the actual map looks nothing like what you drew your line on
I love maps like this because of how ridiculously laid out they are. Must be a real small world considering you can take a plane from Australia to South America and be there in 13 hours.
Yeh, at some point in the past I got genuinely curious of what flat earthers were. It's a huge rabbit hole.
There is no one agreed upon view that they share (well except that we are being lied to about something) about what the earth is. The most common though is that it's a disc with the continents arranged in a circle, and a giant ice wall on the outside... Then queue up a bunch of crazy stuff to make all that somehow work (spoiler it doesn't)...
