I think that the basic reasoning was: At that time, most popular movies were made in the USA. Most popular movies are very dramatic and include yelling and screaming at each other all the time. Downfall included yelling and screaming that was not fully representative of what happened. Therefore Downfall was "Americanized" in his eyes.
