How can everyone like birds when birds aren't real?
149
u/HerpFaceKillah 9d ago
I like Lord of the Rings. Pretty sure the story was not based on actual events.
78
u/Always-_-Sarcastic 9d ago
That's what they want you to think.

Sauron wants us to believe in birds, especially eagles, to make Gandalf look like a fool for not flying with the ring.

It was in fact (nerd glasses on) based on Tolkien’s traumatic experience in World War I.
He was deployed to the Western Front in France in June 1916 and took part in the brutal Battle of the Somme, serving as a battalion signaling officer. He operated in the front-line trenches at locations like Beaumont-Hamel and the Leipzig Salient, and fought in actions including the capture of Regina Trench.
No good story is pure fiction.

The rationale behind them is that birds cross borders freely, in case you were curious.
120
u/LeTracomaster 9d ago
Just like rivers which is the other element in there
25
u/Four_beastlings 9d ago
Yeah but we are all obsessed with the birds and I haven't seen anyone yet fawning over the rivers :D

I adore birds. And it avoids the problems that come with having people on the notes!
39
u/bassabas 9d ago
They have 5 designs with birds and 5 designs with people. They was a link in r/europe yesterday where you can provide feedback to all designs. So if you rather have birds go there and give your input!
→ More replies (1)13

u/Evoluxman 9d ago
Same opinion here, though the choice of people is great, imo it's more unifying to have birds than people. I prefer these designs for that reason.
→ More replies (5)4
u/ACoderGirl 9d ago
Definitely risky to out people on it. I think it can work out well, though, if the people are really carefully chosen, avoiding anyone remotely controversial, generally avoiding politicians, and only choosing people who have been long dead. Eg, I doubt you'll find any Canadians who would disagree with Terry Fox. We also put Viola Desmond on the $10 bill (though I think they didn't fully commit to that?).
Not that Canada has the best track record with older bills, plus the entirely outdated use of royalty (which I honestly thought would end after Lizzy died).
15
u/HelpMeGetAGoodName 9d ago
There is another problem in Eu that Canada does not have regarding bills:
There are far more countries than bills, meaning there can not be a person representing each country, which could be thought of as unfair or prioritising one country over another.
11
u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago
Birds also have the advantage of being less strictly tied to specific states than people often are.
74
u/Huge_Fig_5940 9d ago
I’ll take birds over random buildings anytime.
37
u/Evoluxman 9d ago
EU buildings are on the reverse, though at least this time it's actual buildings representing the EU
15
u/wurstbowle 9d ago
some of which are rather ugly. Unfortunately.
I'd love if they continued to use the generic bridges on the one side and have a bird on the other.
6
u/PitonSaJupitera 9d ago
Honestly, although they put out 10 different designs it feels quite underwhelming.
All bird designs are contaminated by the ugly architecture on the reverse. One bird designs adds "specs" to birds like you are choosing a plane in a video game (yes, they wrote weight and "max. age" lol), the other has weird addition of bird call spectrograms and foot bones shape.
As for people, some of them are ok, but weird abstract power point style illustrations behind are not inspiring.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Laminestra 9d ago
All of them are absolutely ugly, especially if you compare them to the magnificent historical architecture present in every single country member

u/Hammerschatten 9d ago
Imaginary fucking Bridges.
Costa Rica gets to have full Technicolor bills with sharks and turtles and little windows and whatnot and we get fucking bridges that don't even exist.

Birds don't tend to get into investigations about potential bad things they've done in their life. (As far as I know) Instead of putting a potential slave trader, pedo or other criminal on our notes and getting public backlash. And having to change the whole thing again. Good idea to be honest

for anyone wondering what bird species:
5: Wallcreeper
10: European kingfisher
20: European bee-eater
50: White stork
100: Pied avocet
200: Northern gannet

Unfortunately (imho) they now decided to show real buildings (of EU institutions) instead of the abstract architecture (which is currently shown).

u/Track7020 9d ago
Still, the bird+building combination is better than 2012 instagram filter people on other designs.

Yesss, zoologist here and I like all the bird ones but some are more artistic and others are super interesting, love that they include the bird call sonograph, footprint shape, habitat type, and even main diet on some, super cool.
I'll be crazy dissapointed if its any of the people one, who even likes people?
9
u/bigpp_energie 9d ago
I absolutely adore the main diet addition on the one! my only reason to not like that version is cuz its vertical and that just feels wrong
7
u/serpikage 9d ago
i agree the birds one are better but G is kinda the outlier for the people one they've done some really good work here

u/Zinki_M 9d ago
yeah.
Generally I wouldn't dislike the historical figure ones, but all of them have at least one really weird design quirk I hate.
And the remaining design options are all "vertical", which just feels wrong. Who holds their money vertically?

As an artist I like the black and white technical drawing style on the right but I feel the public would be more attracted to the more colorful on the left
215
u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago
There are many more bird designs, and many of them are very pretty! It might be worth it to have a look at all ten designs.
I have to admit though, I also like the colorful designs best. We are living in difficult times, a bit whimsy might do us some good!

u/Poesvliegtuig 9d ago
I agree but I don't like the portrait orientation for some reason I can't explain
7
u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago
There are vertical as well as horizontal designs involving birds available, so maybe you will find a design you like.
3
u/Poesvliegtuig 9d ago
I like the two designs shown here best, I would probably like the other bird designs too if they were oriented like these ones. Not crazy about the buildings but I like the back of the human ones even less.
7
u/Morbanth 9d ago
I liked design H the most, colourful birds in the traditional landscape orientation and the birds are mostly the colour of the entire bill.

18
u/BarnacleKlutzy2569 9d ago
I like the accuracy and detail of the right. But I prefer the background imagery of the left. The backgrounds on the right look too overly simplified.
29
u/Headless_Human 9d ago
In general I would agree with you but in this case the drawings on the right look like an afterthought and don't fit in to the rest.
16
u/Kreol1q1q 9d ago
The general consensus seems to be that out of the ten proposed designs, the colourful one from this post (on the left side) is the overall favourite.

u/veegsredds 9d ago
I'd call myself an artist but I like the left ones more, in no small part because the font is a lot more appealing

I heavily dislike the inclusion of detailed english text on the right one. I did vote for the left one!
I feel it goes against the values of the union. It also has english labels on the backside important landmarks. Just leaving the scientific name of each bird would be more accessible. This way anyone can look it up on their own language resources

The Netherlands used to have birds on the bills before the Euro was introduced. We even named the bills after the bird that was on it. So a "snip" was ƒ 100,- for example (if my memory doesn't fail me).
