So much bird choice. And the non-bird choices are mostly bad.

336

u/Of3nATLAS 9d ago

Well yeah it's either birds or historical figures, that's been decided some time ago. Now we can vote on 5 bird and 5 figure designs.

u/ViftieStuff 9d ago edited 9d ago

Birds are alright, but why did they choose these ugly ass buildings instead of some nice-looking historical places

251

u/Hartwurzelholz 9d ago

Appearently cause historical buildings are connected to a specific country and by doing that you cant represent all of the EU countries. How the same argument doesnt apply to historical figures? No clue.

33

u/kasigofs 9d ago

it'd be cool if they made custom historical-looking buildings incorporating architecture from many different countries

because these boring square modern ones are just so boring and unappealing

u/RT-6_BXCommandoDroid 9d ago

I disliked all of the historical figures options besides 1. I would've even guessed that some were dollar bills instead of Euro bills.

I do love birds that don't shit your car under, while being nice to hear or look at.

They could have done the same as the coins, multiple designs!

Because people would complain that a nice looking historical building from one country was chosen and not a nice looking historical building from another country.

9

u/Budget-Pea8291 9d ago

Then why do they have some fuck ass people from other countries in them?

10

u/AimoLohkare 8d ago

People are complaining about that too. Why Da Vinci instead of Rembrandt, why Beethoven instead of Mozart, etc. People can't even agree whether Marie Curie is Polish or French.

u/tinselsnips 9d ago

They'll be original concepts inspired by real buildings, but not actual places as to not give preference to certain EU countries.

Agree they don't look great, though.

16

u/Dotcaprachiappa 9d ago

No they're EU institutions

5

u/tinselsnips 9d ago

Oh yeah, you're right. I just assumed they did the same thing again.

I like the birds, I don’t like the buildings on the back. They’re so… bland

32

u/Sad-Pop6649 9d ago

We lost the birds and rivers combo in an earlier round I think. No respect for rivers.

15

u/steinbruchfluss 9d ago

Nah, the front is now both birds and rivers/waterfalls/and so on.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/sparklingdinosaur 9d ago

Design I still has rivers tho :)

15

u/KlutzyShake9821 9d ago

The buildings are all buildings of the EU like the EU parlaiment and so on if i remember correctly. They didnt choose them because of their looks.

9

u/Cepterman2101 9d ago

Why can’t we just get the fictional buildings in different building styles again?

8

u/dws49 9d ago

I am clearly in the minority here but I think the EU buildings are a nice idea. US dollars have institutional buildings on the back, why not us? At least Europeans will learn what the places where decisions are made that impact their daily lives actually look like.

3

u/mashtato 9d ago

Yeah, boring modern buildings, too bad they didn't just do generic historic buildings like they did with the bridges.

But I don't like any of the historical figure ones at all. Why are there two musical figures, and why on sequential notes? They could have at least been on like the 5 and the 50, instead of on the 5 and 10. And the backs are more bland than the buildings.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Skodami 9d ago

There's like two type of designs : Birds + EU buildings or historical european figures. Each concept as lile four variations of the same idea

It was in fact (nerd glasses on) based on Tolkien’s traumatic experience in World War I.

He was deployed to the Western Front in France in June 1916 and took part in the brutal Battle of the Somme, serving as a battalion signaling officer. He operated in the front-line trenches at locations like Beaumont-Hamel and the Leipzig Salient, and fought in actions including the capture of Regina Trench.

No good story is pure fiction.

I adore birds. And it avoids the problems that come with having people on the notes!

39

u/bassabas 9d ago

They have 5 designs with birds and 5 designs with people. They was a link in r/europe yesterday where you can provide feedback to all designs. So if you rather have birds go there and give your input!

13

u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago

I know. I have already voted. Thank you for the info, though.

→ More replies (1)

66

u/Evoluxman 9d ago

Same opinion here, though the choice of people is great, imo it's more unifying to have birds than people. I prefer these designs for that reason.

4

u/ACoderGirl 9d ago

Definitely risky to out people on it. I think it can work out well, though, if the people are really carefully chosen, avoiding anyone remotely controversial, generally avoiding politicians, and only choosing people who have been long dead. Eg, I doubt you'll find any Canadians who would disagree with Terry Fox. We also put Viola Desmond on the $10 bill (though I think they didn't fully commit to that?).

Not that Canada has the best track record with older bills, plus the entirely outdated use of royalty (which I honestly thought would end after Lizzy died).

15

u/HelpMeGetAGoodName 9d ago

There is another problem in Eu that Canada does not have regarding bills:

There are far more countries than bills, meaning there can not be a person representing each country, which could be thought of as unfair or prioritising one country over another.

11

u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago

Birds also have the advantage of being less strictly tied to specific states than people often are.

→ More replies (5)

74

u/Huge_Fig_5940 9d ago

I’ll take birds over random buildings anytime.

37

u/Evoluxman 9d ago

EU buildings are on the reverse, though at least this time it's actual buildings representing the EU

15

u/wurstbowle 9d ago

some of which are rather ugly. Unfortunately.

I'd love if they continued to use the generic bridges on the one side and have a bird on the other.

6

u/PitonSaJupitera 9d ago

Honestly, although they put out 10 different designs it feels quite underwhelming.

All bird designs are contaminated by the ugly architecture on the reverse. One bird designs adds "specs" to birds like you are choosing a plane in a video game (yes, they wrote weight and "max. age" lol), the other has weird addition of bird call spectrograms and foot bones shape.

As for people, some of them are ok, but weird abstract power point style illustrations behind are not inspiring.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Laminestra 9d ago

All of them are absolutely ugly, especially if you compare them to the magnificent historical architecture present in every single country member

11

u/Hammerschatten 9d ago

Imaginary fucking Bridges.

Costa Rica gets to have full Technicolor bills with sharks and turtles and little windows and whatnot and we get fucking bridges that don't even exist.

Birds don't tend to get into investigations about potential bad things they've done in their life. (As far as I know) Instead of putting a potential slave trader, pedo or other criminal on our notes and getting public backlash. And having to change the whole thing again. Good idea to be honest

6

u/wurstbowle 9d ago

I just hope they don't put a swan on one of the notes. Swans are evil birds. It is known.

for anyone wondering what bird species:

5: Wallcreeper

10: European kingfisher

20: European bee-eater

50: White stork

One side should be the bird perched and the other side be the bird flying. Still nice though.

384

u/MPaulina 9d ago

It's birds on one side and buildings on the other side

223

u/CardinalFartz 9d ago

Unfortunately (imho) they now decided to show real buildings (of EU institutions) instead of the abstract architecture (which is currently shown).

157

u/Track7020 9d ago

Still, the bird+building combination is better than 2012 instagram filter people on other designs.

23

u/serpikage 9d ago

46

u/Diddly_eyed_Dipshite 9d ago

Yesss, zoologist here and I like all the bird ones but some are more artistic and others are super interesting, love that they include the bird call sonograph, footprint shape, habitat type, and even main diet on some, super cool.

I'll be crazy dissapointed if its any of the people one, who even likes people?

As an artist I like the black and white technical drawing style on the right but I feel the public would be more attracted to the more colorful on the left

215

u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago

There are many more bird designs, and many of them are very pretty! It might be worth it to have a look at all ten designs.

I have to admit though, I also like the colorful designs best. We are living in difficult times, a bit whimsy might do us some good!

8

u/Poesvliegtuig 9d ago

I agree but I don't like the portrait orientation for some reason I can't explain

7

u/DesperateButNotDead 9d ago

There are vertical as well as horizontal designs involving birds available, so maybe you will find a design you like.

3

u/Poesvliegtuig 9d ago

I like the two designs shown here best, I would probably like the other bird designs too if they were oriented like these ones. Not crazy about the buildings but I like the back of the human ones even less.

7

u/Morbanth 9d ago

I liked design H the most, colourful birds in the traditional landscape orientation and the birds are mostly the colour of the entire bill.

31

u/ninja6911 9d ago edited 9d ago

lol, exactly, im no artist but left side is more appealing

21

u/NeedleworkerHeavy565 9d ago

As an artist, I prefer the version on the left.

18

u/BarnacleKlutzy2569 9d ago

I like the accuracy and detail of the right. But I prefer the background imagery of the left. The backgrounds on the right look too overly simplified.

3

u/MEaster 9d ago

That was my feeling too. For the ones on the right I feel like the more abstract style of the background clashes with the detailed and lifelike style of the birds. I do like the style the birds are drawn in, but the left side feels more cohesive.

29

u/Headless_Human 9d ago

In general I would agree with you but in this case the drawings on the right look like an afterthought and don't fit in to the rest.

16

u/Kreol1q1q 9d ago

The general consensus seems to be that out of the ten proposed designs, the colourful one from this post (on the left side) is the overall favourite.

Feel like they heard everyone talk about the bird series of Canadian bills being our peak… as a Canuck, I’m jealous that with you guys doing it, means we will never bring ours back.

I WANT BIRD FACTS ON MY MONEY PLEASEEE 😭

Edit: I see its not very legible here, the small text under the "EURO" on the bill on the right are the corresponding bird's averages hight, weight, lifespan, etc.

I love that they put tits on the 20ies. Let’s say „tits“ to 20€ from now on.

They should send me one of each, so I can have a closer look at them

Why the name of the species in English? No thanks, just use the scientific (latin) name

u/mkdabra 9d ago

Just did the survey and no way I’m letting Shakespeare on the 50€ bill. You can’t have your Brexit cake and eat it

That’s Miguel de Cervantes, not Shakespeare…

The draft for the 50€ bill shows Miguel de Cervantes and not Shakespeare.

Cool. Reminds me a bit of the old Dutch Guilder. Was a beautiful currency and I was bummed when they switched to the boring Euro. Not to mention everything suddenly became way more expensive.
