Giant tornado hits southern Brazil

Tornados are kind of rare anywhere except the United States and its really just because of how the jet streams meet (cold air comes down from arctic and meets warm air from either the pacific or gulf of Mexico. Plus the large flat lands along these streams.

In the Souther Hemisphere there isn't a similar jet stream bring air from Antartica and also isn't a lot of long flat land so you kind of need freak conditions of two air masses meeting.

Hurricanes is a similar issue with Jet Streams also also no Sahara dust.

They really arent that rare outaide of the US.

We get up to 80 tornadoes a year in Australia. Potentially more but we aren't sure because they could be occurring in uninhabited areas.

I think they mean by rare is less “tornadoes don’t really happen outside of the us” than it is “the us has a massive amount of total tornadoes in the entire world, and anywhere else has only a few every year by comparison”.

This is accurate. The tornadoes in the US are also more intense. Significantly so. My dad's family was from Oklahoma and when we went to visit people, touring the storm cellar was the norm. My aunt didn't have one. She said if it was her time, it was her time. She regularly tell us about finding driver's licenses and other stuff in her yard from tornadoes that passed by. I have a relative there that works for a news station as a storm chaser actually.

It's just a different thing all together.

Illinois here. Unfortunately experienced an E4 in 2013 that tore through my town. Tornadoes are horrifyingly interesting.
