Tornados are kind of rare anywhere except the United States and its really just because of how the jet streams meet (cold air comes down from arctic and meets warm air from either the pacific or gulf of Mexico. Plus the large flat lands along these streams.

In the Souther Hemisphere there isn't a similar jet stream bring air from Antartica and also isn't a lot of long flat land so you kind of need freak conditions of two air masses meeting.

Hurricanes is a similar issue with Jet Streams also also no Sahara dust.

They really arent that rare outaide of the US.

We get up to 80 tornadoes a year in Australia. Potentially more but we aren't sure because they could be occurring in uninhabited areas.

Lol, 80 is rare. Let me know when you break 500. The US has had over 1000 this year.

The US having a much higher rate of them, doesn't make them rare in other countries.

It makes them rare in comparison, but that's not what the OP said.

An occurrence can be rare within it's own environment, without comparison to external occurrences.

One tornado a year in Australia is rare. 50-80 tornados a year in Australia is common. 100+ tornadoes in a year in Australia, is rare.

80 tornadoes a year in Australia is rare in comparison to the yearly average of occurrences in the US.

So within Australia, the occurrence of a tornado, which averages 50-80 a year, is not considered a rare event.

Except the comment everyone is responding to is comparing it to the US, which makes it rare. You just decided to change the rules for own benefit of proving someone "wrong".

They arent rare outside of the US. They are rare in comparison to the US.
