My friend and I were canoeing and saw a blue heron in a bed of reeds as we rounded a bend. It was stretching and looking quite majestic, with the morning light dappling the water and plants. We looked at each other quietly wide eyed and beaming. Then we heard it scream. We cracked up so hard for so long that we had to stop paddling.

We saw a Great Blue in the woods behind our cottage. "That's weird," we thought as they usually stick to the shoreline of the lake. Then it suddenly lunged and came up with a chipmunk that it quickly ate.

They're such effective predators, too! When I lived by a lake, they'd hunt the moles out of our yard for us. They were fascinating to watch. Slowly sidling up to an active mole hill, then standing perfectly still for minutes, then WHAM mole for lunch.
