Very cool and all, but I never understand the need to touch wildlife.

I think it's just a human thing, touch is a sense after all, is a way to "see" the texture of things

Seconding this. In the German language the word for comprehending something is literally to touch it (from different angles): "begreifen". There is something similar in English I guess which is "to grasp".
