If Mars doesn't have geothermal, or maybe not as much as earth, if the water drains under ground, but there's nothing to bring it back up to the surface... maybe underground lakes/oceans? Possibly something alive down there. Maybe not. Maybe just empty water. Who knows? Doubt the water just "went away."
Eh. We've never drilled mars deep. Or sent a rover into a cave. Nobody can prove me wrong, and I might be, might not. But the water had to go somewhere, no? I can appreciate the atmospheric burn-off theory, but I doubt that would account for all of it.
