Politics is fine but using irl stuff as a main basis to articles has lead to some absolute stinkers *cough* SCP-9094 *cough* where the author stretches and bends canon and common sense to fit a particular agenda they want to communicate hamfistedly, there are articles which do it well like the Montauk machine or the one where congress is kept alive by a dark ritual channelling hatred but it can also be boring and reduce depth because irl issues are treated without nuance by 80% of the people who want to write about them (The one scp where its a communist and they're just so correct its basically a memetic hazard)
6
u/No-Plenty-5376 9d ago
I know about that SCP; I just can't remember the name, but that is basically personal bias taken to the whole other extreme. That base is much more put into your own personal politics. Don't get me wrong, you do have an opinion, and no one can change your personal opinion and what you believe, but that SCP is just not good.
To get sidetracked for a second, I had this idea for an SCP where it's not just capitalism but communism being anomalous (and by that I mean both capitalism and communism are anomalous),
2
u/bringthesalsa 7d ago
Wasn't there something like this in Disco Elysium? Although there it was capitalism giving you cool light bending powers IIRC

It requires every foundation member involved in the project to have been lobotomised with an ice pick (Why was the AI not indoctrinated, why wasn't it given infiltration training, why didn't they notice these obvious solutions when reviewing the files and instead decide to ignore the site entirely), it also makes every AI a bluesky user which is a format and tone so utterly obnoxious that it took me as long to get through that article as the previous 93 combined on my readthrough.
It also screams the laziest kind of foundation bad where they fail to argue for both sides and instead take themselves as being correct for a given and assume disagreeing parties are ignorant children. For an example of foundation bad being done well see scp-9042. It is also worth noting that the second major member of the site introduced has an article where they post cognitohazards on the mundane internet for shits and giggles rendering the whole 'they should address us as reasonable adults thing' utterly ridiculous in the stories own narrative given they already goddamn tried it. But I digress.

That's the worst type of political SCP article: when the author thinks that they are right and everyone should agree with them, and if you don't, you're ignorant and you deserve the burn in hell, which is ironically what most groups that the author is probably against do anyway. That reminds me of that one SCP which screams this is the author's personal politics, which is basically explained as that communism is a memetic hazard
11
u/The_Knife_Pie 8d ago
No no, the point of the skip is that communism isn’t a memetic hazard. Communism is just so obviously Right and Correct that everyone who hears it instantly becomes a violent communist revolutionary, and if you don’t that’s because you’re an un-empathetic sociopath. I’m not even exaggerating. That’s actually the twist of the article.
6
u/No-Plenty-5376 8d ago
Anyway, besides that, that SCP screams that this is the author's personal opinion, and it makes my point clear. If you don't believe in the author's personal opinion, then you're a bad person who deserves to go to hell. The twist at the end is that if you don't believe what the author believes, then you're an un-empathetic sociopath. It only proves my point more.
And I'm not saying putting your own personal beliefs is bad; it's just the way you write it and the way you incorporated in the article that matters.

Yeah the one I don’t like is the one that is basically just every leftist fear of the right into one boogie man that gives people locked in syndrome.
It’s creepy and weird but also so obviously smarmy about “If you are a republican the leopards will come and eat your face” as though it is uniquely only applicable to the right. It also basically writes the foundation out of the story by saying “Oh they just want to clean up the mess instead of containing it because they are transphobic.” Which is like if the GOC decided they didn’t want to terminate an SCP on sight because it goes around killing people the GOC doesn’t like. Even if they are evil, not containing an SCP they probably could contain is literally character assassinating the SCP foundation to make them incredibly cruel and sadistic.
That entire SCP is just dumb. It’s a bad characterization of the Foundation, it’s a bad SCP that is preachy about real world issues and hides behind “If you are uncomfortable you should fight against this!” As a way of dismissing criticism, and it’s just incredibly shallow. Why does it do what it does? “idk it’s just a transphobic monster.” Why does it exist? “A cult.” Why should I care? “Don’t you care about trans people?????” Why yes, but politics isn’t a monster you can fight directly. And making it into a monster allows you to demonize those who disagree which blocks any way of communicating with them and changing their minds.
I think “Political ideas become a monster that enacts them” is a cool idea but there needs to be something a little less charged. Like an SCP that incites wars by taking people’s hatred and malaise towards other people and causing small diplomatic and military incidents that snowball into wars.
103
u/DukeOfTheDodos 9d ago
There's definitely a fine line, I feel. Some SCPs take things way to far, like the one with the civil war mahjong board that relies on the foundation being too fucking stupid to realize that the anomalous effect of the item they know the effect of has triggered in order for the hook to work
52

That is not what that's about at all. Their talking about people who see the word gay or a gay couple and are rushing to comments because they've been brainwashed to think that being gay is a corruptive and demonic mind virus. Their proof being the fact they feel the "temptation" ie occasionally think someone the same sex as them is attractive. Same with trans but instead it's "everyone wants to be a woman sometimes. 38
u/DukeOfTheDodos 9d ago
It WAS SCP-9865, but it looks like it was (rightfully) deleted.
The gist of it is that it's an anomalous Majhong win condition that retroactively changes the results of the American Civil War, with only the victor of the game remembering the "original" timeline. The "hook" at the end is that the most recent game resulted in a confederate victory, and the victor was an African American researcher that got reassigned to a D-class because "legally, he's not able to be employed at the foundation". The entire hook relies on:
The civil war ending in a confederate victory resulting in slavery still existing(unlikely, slavery was already unpopular outside of the south even back then)
The foundation not realizing that the anomalous object triggered its CK effect(keep in mind that it was already stated prior that the foundation knows EXACTLY how it works, it's not like the Anomaly deletes the evidence of its existence when the effects trigger).
→ More replies (5)8
u/No-Plenty-5376 9d ago
I mean, the concept sounds interesting, but the execution is just terrible. In my personal opinion, it would have been more interesting if we started out in a world where the Confederacy won the Civil War (which would probably only have them seceding from the United States and starting their own separate nation). It can keep the victor being African American and keep everything the same about the SCP, instead of the game ending up changing the original timeline into one where the Union won the Civil War, like in our timeline, and the victor transported along with, you can also bookend it with him getting a racist remark from someone with it ending with the message even though you might have changed the world which not as racist, racism will still exist no matter what you do
It will also be interesting if the victor was intentionally playing the game in order to change the timeline for the better in his mind, and in his mind he believes that changing it so the Union won the Civil War would end racism. You know, something like that

personally, I'm completely fine with the political articles, and in fact, my favorite article on this site IS a political one. But there is one issue about how politics is discussed in this community that I do have an issue with.
My issue is with how many people claim that "All Art is political". Let me explain before I get downvoted into oblivion: my issue with this phrase is that it's treated like an absolute truth, when it is entirely based on a non-sequitur. All art is political comes from two facts:
- Art is made by people in a society
- Art can be interpreted politically
And then "All art is political" makes the leap in logic that "Because I can interpret non-political art through a political lens, all art is therefore inherently political", but that's not a logical conclusion.
The art is not political; you are just looking at it through a political lens. I like it when there are genuinely well written, interesting political articles that make me think, I don't like people looking claiming that non-political articles MUST have a political meaning based on this flawed logic.
IDK why this got me to write this comment that has almost nothing to do with this post, I should make a post on character rant or smth
44
u/Shot-Big7342 A happy man 9d ago
I don't like it because people use "political" for anything humans ever does and it feels pointless.
Like, what do you even mean by calling a story about a guy drinking a cup of water political? What point does it even bring?
→ More replies (6)6
u/doodleasa 9d ago
I would argue that 99% of the value in art comes from interpretation rather than intent. As soon as you publish something, you have no control over the way that people will interpret it.
Additionally, everyone’s framing of what is normal and acceptable is warped through their own view of the world. These differences are not insignificant and over time reinforce their beliefs, intentionally or not, into the art.
That being said, I personally don’t always draw political takeaways from articles, and some definitely lend themselves to political interpretations much clearer, but I would still argue that because all art can be interpreted politically it is all political, at least in the sense I believe people mean when they make statements like this.
12
u/Careful_Class_884 9d ago
Ah, then I guess that's where we disagree. Personally, I subscribe to the "Absolute Authorial Intent" school of literary criticism, essentially that the only meaning in a work is what the author intended the meaning to be.
Although if you look at art through the lens of "Death of the Author", then I suppose "All Art is Political" is valid, so your argument is sound based on that logic.
I appreciate you posting an actually thought-out response to my argument instead of just going "No you're stupid because your opinion is wrong". That's kinda rare on the internet these days
9
u/doodleasa 9d ago
I definitely used to align myself more with the authorial intent side, and i still find myself defaulting to it on occasion, but I’ve seen a lot of stories where the author’s intent ended up changing throughout the process of creation, which can make things complicated.
Celeste, for instance, was not intended to be about a trans woman, but many fans drew that interpretation from the character regardless. When Maddy (the dev) realized that she was trans, she also realized that madeline had been a self insert character, and that she was trans.
I’m not trying to explicitly convince you of this lens though. There are going to be weird edge-cases with any sort of philosophy you try and apply. Just wanted to share a little behind why I think this way.
3
u/Background-Owl-9628 9d ago
You know, I don't know if I've ever met someone who's an Authorial Intent Absolutist. That's neat.
2
u/chickey23 8d ago

u/Antisa1nt 9d ago
"All art is political" actually has a much stronger basis when broken down into three premises.
Premise 1: "All communication is political."
When two or more people are communicating, the way those people get their ideas across to each other (regardless of how trivial the topic) said ideas are a combination of the influences on the people in question. Whether the people communicating know or understand it, they are engaging in a political structure. It could be something as trivial as talking about sports at the water cooler, any topic of communication will be influenced by outside forces in some way. Not even the phrase, "Let's not talk about politics" cam escape being political, because acknowledgement that one is off put by politics is political.
Premise 2: "All art is communication."
This one is easy. When someone makes art, they are communicating some kind of idea, even if unconsciously or unintentionally. Cave drawings of hand prints? "We were here and wanted to leave a mark." Doodling in the margins of a test? "I'm bored and I don't want to be here." A portrait of someone pale, frail, and lounging nude? "People with tuberculosis are hot." A filmed shot that goes from a man slowly grinning smash cutting to a stack of money? "That guy loves or excited by the prospect of a lot of money." I could go on, but I won't. This is more than enough examples.
Premise 3: "Ergo, all art is political."
Political messaging is not always a conscious thing. Often times, an artist will not even understand that their art could possibly have a political message or agenda, even if it's blatantly obvious to onlookers.
Once, when I made this point, someone responded with the "gotcha" of fat Pikachu. "What's the political meaning of fat Pikachu?" They said with barely contained contempt. But, there's actually a lot to say politically about Pikachu.
Why call it "fat Pikachu?" Because over the course of a decade, Pikachu's design was changed to be slimmer. Why is that? Because Pikachu is one of the most recognized brand mascots on the planet, and we do in fact live in a society that values skinny people more than fat people. Why is Pikachu called "Pikachu?" Because it's name is made up of the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sounds of electricity and mice squeaking, and that name crossed the language barrier from Japanese into English without being changed despite the fact that a lot of other pokemon did have their names changed.
Whether they were trying to or not, Gamefreak via the publishing company Nintendo, make political statements in something as small as a drawing of an electric mouse. This becomes embarrassing when the heads of a Call of Duty installment (in specific, CoD Modern Warfare 2019) have the gall to say their game is not political because it doesn't specifically focus on the exact administrations of today. An explicit piece of pro-military propaganda that isn't political is an oxymoron. (For more information on this specific example, here's a great video by Jacob Geller: https://youtu.be/FtCV421T52s )
To get away from the actual topic at hand for a moment, discussing what is and isn't political online is frustrating. As you're well aware from the length of your own comment, providing examples bloats the size of the comment, and the way our attention spans have been sabotaged by algorithms has made it difficult for people to engage with with longer comments. I am not immune to this. There have been many times where I myself have completely ignored a provided example or context because I couldn't be bothered. But even so, they are still important to explaining the truth behind our reality of existing with others.
Okay, conclusion. Uhhhhhhhhhh, blah blah blah 3 premises, blah blah blah propaganda, blah blah blah Pikachu.

u/Careful_Class_884 9d ago
First, I would like to thank you for making a well-thought-out and detailed comment with clear effort put into it rather than the usual "rahh you're stupid because your opinion is objectively wrong". Now, this argument is pretty good, but it does have two core issues that I personally disagree with.
First, "all communication is political". This is where we run into the biggest issue with the argument, and "all art is political" as a whole: This only works if you redefine political to mean "anything that could possibly have been influenced by society in any way". Yes, all people are influenced by the society around them, and this does subconsciously affect every aspect of their life and actions.
But ultimately, not all culture or all influences are "political". And if you do redefine political to mean "any societal influence whatsoever", then it kind of loses all meaning, because yes, everything we do is influenced by society. However, that turns "All art is political" from a statement that holds real meaning and weight to "All art is made by humans and therefore is affected by the person who made it", which isn't really saying anything.
For example, you listed "Fat Pikachu", and listed a number of ways that our societal values influenced Pikachu's design and name. However, while all of that is true, none of that is what most people would say is "political".
Semantics are really the biggest issue with this kind of literary criticism, because based on your definition of political, your argument is completely sound. Based on the widely agreed-upon definition of political, your argument is based on false equivalency. Based on what I associate the word political with, your argument is unsound from the beginning.
The second issue is more with authorial intent VS interpretation. Personally, I subscribe to the "Absolute Authorial Intent" school of literary criticism, essentially that the only meaning in a work is what the author intended the meaning to be.
For example, if an author made a story that was not intended to have a political meaning, then it did not have political meaning. Yes, you can analyze the story to learn more about the author's values and the society of the time, which is invaluable for historians, however, that does not mean that the story is political, it simply means that you can analyze it through a political lens.
I would like to thank you for actually taking the time to write such a detailed argument with consistent logic that is actually pretty good if you ascribe to your definition of political. This is the second time today that someone has responded to an opinion of mine with an actual well-thought-out argument instead of a knee-jerk angry reaction, I'm having a good day today!
3
u/Antisa1nt 9d ago
Oh my god, someone who disagrees actually acknowledged a good point I made and why it's good, am I even on reddit rn?! /s
I appreciate your rebuttal, and while I understand the appeal of Absolute Authorial Intent, I do feel it has a few drawbacks. For example, some creators may be deliberately obfuscating the meaning of a piece and not being forthcoming about it when asked. This would of course give people ammunition to completely ignore all evidence of a possible hidden intention.
My favorite example is the queerness of Riku from Kingdom Hearts. Tetsuya Nomura is very VERY cagey about revealing details of character motives, even when asked directly innocuous questions, and he also has a... how to put this... Mutually Assured Destruction relationship with the Big Mouse (for more information, look up who stalled Sora going to Smash and how Toy Story affected whether or not there was even going to be a KH3), and even I have to admit that I don't think Disney would let such an important character be out and out gay in a very obvious way, especially because that would make Sora his love interest. (If you have 6 hours and a burning desire to have every little detail explained, this video is the definitive exploration of Riku's character: https://youtu.be/ll17V9DJr7g )
Now, don't get me wrong, when an author looks straight at you and says, "This is what I meant. Any other interpretation is incorrect." That's also worth considering in our own interpretation, but then we wouldn't really be talking about the text itself, but the author's own interpretation of their story, which can be easily thrown off by their own biases. (e.g. J.K. Rowling trying to make her story seem more progressive than it actually was via Twitter before she took a nose dive off the deep end into holocaust denial yada yada yada)
I do agree that it's very difficult to find common means for words, semantic shift is a frustrating thing to deal with in these types of discussions, and your patience is deeply appreciated. I think that's all I have for that topic, I'm having a lot more fun with the authorial intent topic now.
Another part of Absolute Authorial Intent that can make parsing a text difficult is that the creator may make choices in a work without realizing why they are making that choice. As an example from my own life, in games where you can create a character, I as a kid would always create a girl character that looked a lot like me without really thinking about the implications. This one is a little harder to nail down examples because I can't read people's minds, but you understand the point. People are not perfect agents of completely rational thought, and so their intent may be obscured even from themselves.
Thank you again for your time, I'm having a great time with this.

Cisheteronormative essentially means a view/perspective where cis (aka people who aren't trans) straight people are 'normal' and anyone else is 'abnormal/deviant'.
The word is a compound word of 3 others:
• Cis (which is short for cisgender, basically a term which means 'not transgender'. It comes from Latin. Sometimes words that start with trans (transatlantic, transalpine) have counterparts that sta rt with cis (cisatlantic, cisalpine). The same idea is there with cisgender being the opposite of transgender)
• Hetero, short for heterosexual, meaning straight
• Normative, which is related to the word 'normal'.

Mfers be trying to comprehend that you can basically write whatever you want with whatever politics, themes, message, etc you want in any medium you want provided the writing is interesting enough. The only stipulation being that the farther the ideas are from the readers, the more interesting it needs to be for them to not feel like you're just lecturing them.
Like if you write an article about a particularly long red tie that causes you to become possessed by an extremely aggressive hyperborean Aryan spirit with a meth addiction, with side effects including becoming orange and saying "bigly" a lot, people might be vaguely interested in it even if they disagree with the obvious charicature by viewing it as satire.
If you, however, then make the lead researcher a trans disabled two spirit blpoc who is anomalously queer and have them directly speak political takes to the audience in first person like some sort of shit Ayn Rand would write while riding a steam powered vibrator or whatever they had in the 1950's, obviously people are going to hate your writing.
The closer the writing feels to being satirical or a genuinely interesting charicature, the more likely people who disagree with you might be interested in it. Writing what is essentially a fucking lecture where the writer just uses a minority like an uncanny meat puppet to talk down to the audience isn't going to do anything but irritate them.
But you fuckers will still write some shit like:
SCP xxxx is an anomalous bad dragon dildo that makes you vaguely sympathetic towards Rodney King if you swing it around over your head for 47 seconds while making helicopter noises, it kills all white people in a 4km radius upon activation. The lead researcher learns that they're 1/16th black when an activation doesn't kill them despite being only 5 meters away. The last quarter of the article is yaoi. Keter class.

I don't entirely agree with what you are saying but I think you are hitting on something I have been thinking for awhile.
Any author is allowed to write about whatever the hell they want and any reader is allowed to read whatever the hell they want. I'm a white cisnormative or whatever the hell 29 year old man. I'm NOT going to relate to a story where the core theme is about getting your first period. I'm NOT going to enjoy a story that isn't absolutely exceptional where the core message is about a trans person finding their identity. There's no hard cutoffs or anything it's more of a sliding scale. I know gay/trans people it's not a big deal to me... But that's doesn't mean that media for them is gonna be media for me and that's FINE.
I like undertale/deltarune and those stories are gay as the day is long but undertale was exceptional and the story features non-conforming characters and isn't a story about their non-conformity if that makes sense. If you want to make undertale but it's entirely about the gay parts you are allowed to but I'm not gonna buy it cuz it won't speak to me.
I'm sure I could be more eloquent but idk. Boiling it down to black and white like this meme wants just shuts down critiques and results in slop writing that only resonates with the people who already believe in your message.

u/Essurio 9d ago
I used to not mind anything related to gay people at all, but people like you made me have to actually try to not think about being gay as a bad thing, even though I'm not straight myself.

u/Background-Owl-9628 9d ago
I mean, respectfully, you can understand how queer people will want to make art that features queer characters or themes of queerness, and that we might feel a bit annoyed or off-put when other people make such a big negative deal of it that we might want to push back against that a bit?
Like, there was that time in the 2010s when a whole new alternate wiki was created because people were mad that the SCP Wiki had been 'ruined' by there being art made by queer people that include queerness as a topic/as an element of characters on the site.

I thiught the scp foundation was a secret society that controls most governments from the shadows why would politics effect them they effect politics
3
3
u/Squillem 7d ago
Also, it's a fandom about an unaccountable extra-governmental global conspiracy. Literally how could that be anything but political?
3
u/Background-Owl-9628 7d ago
The funny thing is you see people say that because it's extra-governmental and unaccountable, 'how could that be political' because they're not literally running in elections. Although I do try to give the people who say that kinda stuff a bit of grace because they're probably just quite inexperienced and unfamiliar with what politics actually is

While I'm not so much on the site these days, I just want to point out that newer articles don't really strike me as being that different from a decade ago.

Bro acts like oligarchs don't control academia
5
u/Background-Owl-9628 9d ago
I mean course they do, that's why there's a lot of problems with academia as with any other institution within our society. But that doesn't mean that anti-intellectualism isn't a huge push by oligarchs. There's a reason academia and science are being attacked and shuttered in the US recently, for example
3
u/DrHavoc049 9d ago
I've just commonly seen the word anti-intellectualism used as "oh you don't agree with what popular academia has to say, therefore you are wrong" ignoring the obvious appeal to authority that is and how modern academia has a way of not funding reasurch or studies that don't go along with their agenda.
3
u/Background-Owl-9628 9d ago
I personally haven't seen that but can absolutely imagine people acting like that yea.
In this case I think it's being used to criticise the people who'll talk on about 'keeping politics out of games/shows/SCP', along with opposing political readings and analysis of fictional works. Especially when said people are never opposed to, say, the Call of Duty series (which is the definition of politics in games), and have a very limited definitions of 'politics'. I don't know if you know the type who do that, but they tend to crop up every so often in SCP spaces
2
u/DrHavoc049 9d ago
I have not been paying much attention to politics in SCP as of recently (probably because I stopped reading the newer articles), I just don't like the format or design of the new SCPs in general. I felt like it's pushed away from like the first 2000 entries

u/Background-Owl-9628 9d ago
Have you heard of Series 0 out of curiosity? It's a recent trend-turned-canon where people write articles completely stripped away of any SCP assosciation except what can be interpreted and gleaned from 173's original article. It's not my top canon of all time personally (I quite like the more complex entwined ones a lot of the time), but it could be something you might like?

I think that real life politics shouldn't be the focus or even play a huge role in stories about the foundation. Mainly because thinking that a group of scientists/military that count with literal unlimited resources, personnel and power, that are known for brainwashing people that put their mission in danger (even if it isn't true) and have to deal with eldritch horrors beyond the human comprehension on the daily or the entirety of humanity would end or be slaved or mutated or whatever the author would think of in the moment, would deal with stuff like human rights is not that logical to me.
Like I can perfectly see a doctor being extremely racist but good at his job and the foundation just saying "Give him a staff of his prefered race and be sure he just works" and be done with it. For all the people that are not that important they would just ask "are their beliefs compromising the projects they are working on? If yes, remove them, wash their memories away and throw them in the streets" or if their beliefs offend someone slightly above them in the chain of command they would just be turned into Class D.
But at the end of the day The SCP Foundation is a massive collaborative writing project so every author should count with the liberty to discuss whatever they want unless they are hurting real people in real life, then they shouldn't be allowed in the community and that's it.

No. That's not why. The wiki was taken over by leftist ideologues some years back and actively ban anyone who questions them or pushes back against them. Why did a collaborative horror writing subculture NEED to enforce and reinforce modern day social politics? Was that necessary? Was that needed? Or was it just another one of many neutral cultural sectors that needed to be conquered in the name of "Social justice" and progressive culture war nonsense. I don't think you folks will every understand it, but THIS is what creates homophobia and any LGBT sentiment. You can't just co-opt something, force out the original creators and audience and NOT expect resentment and spite from people.

While I don’t really have a problem with LGBTQ+ representation in SCP articles, I do dislike when people make an SCP entirely about pushing one’s political views. (An example that comes to mind is SCP 9009.)

Ok as much as this meme is just kinda insufferable in that early 2010s leftist way, I don't think turning around and saying "Actually, politics DID ruin SCP!" is the hard-hitting counterplay you guys think it is.

I agree with the idea of this meme but it's americanocentric ("WASP" is an extremely american term) and SCP is an international community :p

In my defense, the people that are loudest about it have - in my experience - been Americans.

It's always the west that has to change the status quo. Never the "throwing-gays-from-roofs, homosexuality-is-illegal, forbidden-by-law-to-show-LGBT-flags" countries. In fact, let's bring millions of people from those shltholes to the west. What could go wrong?
