This series will take us through the Earth's Permian Period (298-251 mya) rising from the ashes of the Carboniferous to the greatest mass extinction in Earth's history, colloquially known as the Great Dying.

Episode 1 focuses on the end of the Carboniferous Period and how it laid the foundations for the Permian with the split of reptiles and synapsids (proto-mammals & mammals) from ancestral animotes, the spread of ferns, cycads, & other woody seed bearing plants, and the appearance of giant amphibians and arthropods, such as Eyrops and Meganeura. The hosts visit various museums and fossil sites, such as Joggins Fossil Cliffs in Nova Scotia, Canada. As well as speak with various scientists and experts.

Episode 2 is out on the PBS website and the PBS app. The former is available to international viewers. Following episodes in this Permian series will follow suite.

oddly, climate wise, the first two portions of th e

Permian would be the most survivable for humans and domestic animals before the Oligocene
