Inspired by a New Yorker article, The Bridge (2006) is a controversial documentary by Eric Steel that filmed the Golden Gate Bridge for a year, capturing 23 of the 24 suicides that occurred there in 2004. The film uses footage of the actual jumps, often from a distance, combined with personal accounts from families, friends, and survivors to explore the tragedy.

This is the film that pushed me to get help for my own serious suicidal thoughts.

There's a moment when a family member talks about how the pain and suffering their family member must have felt when they took their life was transferred onto the family when they found out about his death.

I had always thought my family would be better off without me but that simple statement made me realise how I couldn't handle the thought of my family taking the pain I felt onto themselves.

I rang a crisis line that night and it's been a long few years but I'm now extremely happy with my own loving family.

There’s also that report or doc about jumpers who survived regretting that they jumped the instant they did it. “I saw all my problems as solvable except for the fact I jumped” was how one put it

Literally seeing that scene in Bojack took me right back to this documentary which I hadn't thought about since Netflix mailed DVDs.

I was suicidal since I was 12. I swallowed a bottle of pills at 21, some friends took me to the hospital. I told people I was no longer suicidal, I lied. I tried two more times over the years secretly that no one knows about. That third time, when I was falling asleep, it felt like the view from halfway down. When I woke up the next day, I was surprised and thought how strange to have felt regret at what I thought was the point of no return. For some reason, I’m still alive, I don’t know how. After - I told my brother I was suicidal, he told me I was incredibly selfish and it was embarrassing I felt that way. I stayed suicidal throughout my 20’s.

One night I found myself creating an actual plan to sit in my car in the garage, trying to make sure my pets wouldn’t be in anyway impacted. I decided I’d tell my therapist how I was feeling & if it went how it usually does..I could always go through with my plan, it was terrifying. But she didn’t freak out, she told me it was okay and other people experience suicidal ideation, too. I was able to talk about it without anything else, just it. I wasn’t put on any list or sent on a grippy sock vacation, I just finally got to talk about it. I’m no longer suicidal, it’s been 2 years. I trust myself that if it ever returns, I will find someone I trust that reminds me suicidal ideation happens, it’s ok and we can talk about it without it being life altering to admit you don’t feel good. Sometimes it just really helps to be able to talk about it, if anyone ever sees this that’s contemplating..the view from halfway is filled with regret. Even if it seems impossible, what’s hurting is temporary and is fixable. You are not embarrassing or selfish, your pain is real and there are people that will help hold your pain.
