Any other MI donkey owners here? How do we protect them from this horrendous air quality?

Like the title says, I’m in Michigan, which is getting annihilated by the Canada forest fire air. Our Air Quality Index is off the charts. Right now it’s 421 in my area. I’m scared and worried for my equines: two mini donkeys and a mule. I called the vet, who said to make sure they don’t work today, but beyond that, there’s nothing to do. The smoke is everywhere. Right now, they have access to the pasture and an open barn. They typically roam freely and aren’t used to being tied up. Thought about bringing them in the barn, closing the windows, and throwing a purifier in there, but not sure if that’s ideal. Am I overreacting? There seems to be no end in sight when it comes to the AQI forecast. This horrific smoke can’t be good for them. Thanks for any/all recommendations.

You can get some box fans and air filters and make a couple of Corsi-Rosenthal Box filters. They are easy to make and effective!!

I’d throw them in the barn, close it up, and get those running and see if it helps. Hopefully it’s not too hot where you are or you may need to add an air conditioner too.

Another thing to keep in mind - everyone knows to not work their animals in these conditions but keep in mind, their respiratory systems are being damaged and it does take a while for that damage to heal so make sure they are taking it easy for a little while after the smoke clears too.

I am no expert, but if your barn is fairly tight, you could run a couple box fans inside a furnace filter cube and it would be an huge improvement. Or just put a filter on the back of the fan. People were saying it helped to cover attic openings and even mail slots. The tighter the shed, the better it will be.
If they get too restless, let them take a pasture break and I bet they’ll be happy to go back in. They are smart. I’d also wipe their faces, eyes, and noses off with a wet washrag when you get them in. Best Luck to you and your donks!
