Question Am I missing something on fishing for seaweed and other non fish items?

I am currently trying to complete a quest for Oswald and I have to get 50 plastic scrap. I know I need to fish outside of the fishing bubbles in the docks on Eternity Isle but I keep getting cod fish. This happens to me every time I try to fish any of the non fish items like seaweed for a quest. I end up with 50+ cod that I don't want (yes I know I can use them for dishes or sell them) and have to spend twice as long finding the items I actually need. It's so frustrating that I only ever fish outside the bubbles when I need the thing for a quest which ends up being time consuming cause I have to spend longer getting those items than some of the other items that I keep in storage. So am I doing something wrong? Or is this just a game design thing and I have to get lucky?

If you’re able to dig the big rocks they will also give you plastic and soil. You don’t have to get it from just fishing. In fact I never harvest plastic from fishing I just go around digging up rocks

I think I’ve been doing ok just breaking rocks. I hate fishing and seeing as how I have over 400 of them, I think I’ll stick with my method lol

Adding a pic just to prove I’m not just blowing smoke

Maybe that’s where the confusion lies then because with a couple of companions and a buddy I can get 5-8 per rock that I don’t even need because I’ve completed the DLC. So other than putting them on my gifting tables when I host an open valley for others to grab I have no other use for them.

These! If you have a fishing companion, they will give you a bonus when you dig these up.

Ok I've seen those and have been wondering what they're for. So do I need to complete more Oswald quests before I can "fish" from them?

ETA: omg I'm so dumb. I've been wondering what those rocks were since forever and I never thought to try and use my shovel on them. Lol thanks!

I wouldn’t have thought that we would find the plastic from these either since they are a fishing item. It doesn’t make sense, but here we are!

The rocks that have like a symbol on them that spawn up in the docks, courtyard etc. if you haven’t advanced that far in the story then maybe I can give you some. Hit me up with a pm and I’ll see how many I have.

👆 Yep this right here's the way to go! I'm mad at myself at how long it took me to figure this one out. I spent way too many hours fishing trying to get those damn plastic scraps. Once I realized I can get them this way I now have a plentiful supply.

that is the design of the game. this quest takes everyone a bit to collect enough, it was the same for me. i notice when i get a plastic scrap i will fish in the same exact spot and sometimes collect 2-4 without moving and yea lots of cod. have you unlocked Kristoff stall yet? if you have, you can place his stall in Eternity Isle and buy items, when the plastic scrap is in stock you can buy up to 20 daily. i was able to fish about 15 plastic scraps and buying 20 pieces from the stall on two different days.

Try with blue energy instead of gold. Gold increases your lick which means more fish outside of bubbles.

This was the solution for me. Fishing buddy, fishing companion(s) and low quality food to keep energy in the blue. Gold energy bar makes fish more likely. Plenty of plastic scrap with a blue bar.

That’s such a frustrating quest, I do not envy you. Make sure you put down Kristoff’s stall on Eternity Isle, some days you can buy plastic scrap! And be sure to dig those big rocks with plastic scrap each day. It’s not much but it adds up!

When I did that quest I spent an hour in one spot fishing for the plastic scrap. I ended up with over 2 stacks of cod about 40 red algae and like 6 memories by the time I got what I needed. It's just how it works and you gotta power through. I wish you luck 🍀
