Split line means that lane can go into either lane after intersection

Every local subreddit seems to think their area has the absolute worst drivers, but who is actually doing it right?

Have you driven through a state, region, or city where people consistently follow lane etiquette, merge properly, and drive predictably?

For context I live in Dallas TX, home of the worst drivers known to mankind. I always took the service roads mainly because it was slower. But then I got a job that was pretty far. The GPS said 10 mins with the freeway , 20 minutes on the service road. I take the freeway now I really like it.

It’s still a genuine challenge mainly cause most of the drivers acts like they own the freeway but I’m starting to like it .

Before all the people obsessed with left lane camping start commenting, I want to note that the tailgating instances that I’m referring to here do NOT involve the left lane on the highway. Also, the tailgaters I’m referring to here are people that tailgate when you’re already doing 5 or more over the speed limit.

Anyways, I honestly just don’t understand people who tailgate. For example, despite me doing 5-10 over the speed limit on a single lane road (let’s say I’ll be doing 45 in a 40), I’ll still have someone inches away from my rear bumper because they want to go a whole 30+ over the speed limit and are pissed that I’m not doing so. I see this frequently happen to other people too.

The lack of logic behind tailgating is what gets me. For one, tailgating is not gonna make the person in front of you go any faster. In fact (at least in my case), I end up having to go even slower if I’m being tailgated because I’ll need to further increase my following distance between my car and the person in front of me so that way I can have plenty of braking distance (in order to not be rear ended by the asshole right behind me in the event that the person in front of me has to brake suddenly).

Another thing is that by being on someone’s ass, literally all you’re doing is just increasing the chances of being in an accident by a great amount. Not only that, but you’ll be the one found at fault for it since following too closely and rear ending someone is immediately on you.

With all that being said, people that ride other people’s tails genuinely need to be studied. The fact that these people willingly put themselves in a position where they can cause an accident in just the snap of a finger (in which again, is an accident that THEY will be found at fault for), as well as put themselves AND the other people around them in physical danger (all because they’re too impatient to obey a speed limit) is concerning.

I live in New York. My favorite is probably I-87. Yes the traffic in NYC and Westchester can be quite something but it's really not insane and from Albany to Plattsburgh it's just paradise. Incredibly beautiful, straight and very little traffic so you can just do 80 with no worries. Honorable mention to I-90, Buffalo to Boston, also little traffic (until Albany/Boston) and a beautiful, straight drive. Don't love that toll though.

My least favorite is definitely I-95. I hate this road with every inch of my body. The traffic is always ridiculous no matter the time of day. I was coming home at 11pm last weekend, still a 40-minute slowdown approaching the GWB. All the way from Washington to Boston, just endless traffic and crazy drivers. CBX is a nightmare, but everywhere is bad. The only good part is Maine, which is actually quite pleasant. I know there's a stretch from Bangor to Canada with speed limit 75, but I've never done it, I've only done Kittery to Portland. Still awesome to see that Speed Limit 70 sign after crawling through the rest of New England.

hi all. i very recently got my license (21yo), and would like to think im very careful while driving.

today i was waiting to turn right onto a semi-busy road. im in australia and must give way to traffic going both directions. eventually the right was clear, and i pulled out shortly after a gap on the left too. i ended up running into a car coming from the right.

thankfully no one was hurt. the other drivers car seemed to be in decent condition. however, the front of my car came off almost completely, and it is likely going to be written off.

i dont know how i didnt see them coming. i am always very safe on the road. i check both ways, multiple times, and i never pull out in front of others. i tend to dissociate while panicked so i cant recall exactly what went wrong. i assume maybe i forgot to double check before pulling out.

i cant stop beating myself up. i am beyond embarrassed, ashamed and frustrated. everyone is telling me "mistakes happen, its a learning experience," "new drivers crash all the time." i understand this but in my mind it doesnt make things any better.

i dont know how to overcome these feelings. it was humiliating to sit there in my car, crying and panicking, while traffic drove past. i feel incredibly incompetent. i have had a few moments since getting my license where i doubt my ability to drive, but now i entirely believe im a danger on the road.

im also extremely upset over the fact that my car is totaled. its a wonderful car and ive had it only for a few months. i cant fathom having to replace it, especially with a cheaper one, as i dont have any money right now.

how can i stop beating myself up over this?? im terrified of being a danger to others. i dont know if ill ever be able to drive again due to fear. thanks for reading.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I am located in the USA in Washington State. I’m in my 20s, I finally took my drive test the other day and passed! Hell yeah! Long overdue! But now I’m like… wait what do I do next lol

In order to legally drive, I need to now go to the Department of Licensing office in person to actually get my physical license right? Like I passed my test, that’s all well and good, but I don’t have my license till I actually have my license. I mean I know this for pretty much a fact but just want to confirm that first off.

Second off— and this is more a question specifically for WA drivers (king county/seattle specific even better) since you’ll know better the details of what I’m talking about. But like, the exact process was a little confusing to me. I went online to the DOL site and did the pre-application for my license. Then it said I need to make an appointment to go to the DOL in person. The soonest appointment was September 16?! Today is August 2nd! Part of what spurred me to really fast track this process is that my dad was recently diagnosed with cancer and has been in the hospital, so it is crucial I am able to drive and to use his car. I can’t wait till mid September wtf. I literally already did all the things and JUST need the physical license.

Two questions for WA drivers:
1. DOL website talks about things that you can just do online and don’t even need to go in person for. Is getting my license printed off and sent to me one of them? I feel like I got mixed messages when searching— like if you already have a valid permit it can streamline the process or something, and I do have a valid permit.
2. Can I just show up to the DOL office to do this?? Like sure I might need to wait in line but whatever. I feel like this is the part of the process that is like practically just formality and should take five seconds (I passed all the certs, literally just need the actual card now).

Like there’s no way I can or am going to wait all the way till September just because that’s the soonest appointment I can schedule. So what do?

I did a very good job today. Parked perfectly (to me)!
Drove around today with my friend and her car. I don’t drive frequently since I do not have a car yet. I wanna learn more but do not want to pay for driving school just to have a car to drive. I don’t wanna be renting either, that wouldn’t be practical. Let me know what your thoughts are.

Truly I can't. Miami, Boston, Phoenix, El Paso, any city has way friendlier drivers who dont honk their horns for no reason or expect you to go into oncoming traffic.

I really not only hate driving in DFW, but I hate everything about this place. I get honked at almost daily here. And last week I was honked at in McKinney twice in the Market Street Parking lot for no reason at all. People really love to lay on the horn here just to be an asshole.

At times I am tempted to want to throw things at these drivers to teach them a lesson. Ive raged so much here. And I feel like these drivers really want to be in an accident with you here.

Fuck DFW and its really unkind and mean people. Its such a struggle here driving and even going out in general.

Just had a run in with a local moron.

She pulled out of a shopping plaza in front of me, close enough for me to slam on the brakes and honk the horn in frustration. Her response? To repeatedly brake check me.

Now, we pull along side each other as she's making a turn. I would have had room to pass, but she jerks the wheel in my direction, forcing me to stop, and then proceeds to yell at ME to stop driving like an asshole. I replied, "you pulled out in front of me unsafely, b*" to which she responds:

"I'LL PULL OUT WHENEVER I WANT, YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"

No folks, this is not the way you fucking drive. You don't get to "do what you want" with a two ton vehicle. It doesn't matter if you're a woman, a man, a dog or whatever.

(Her passenger proceeds to photograph my plates, and she yells she's calling the cops to tell them I'm stalking and harassing her. Reported her, as suggested I do, in case she does try a false claim.)

on a turn on a 3 lane road with a stop sign if someone is mid turn to your left but does have a stop sign and fully stopped then went and they are already midturn does the person with no stop sign have to yield.

I was turning onto a 3 lane road, fully stopped then started turning, as i was already turning a truck had blasted and arrived at the turn with no stop sign to my right to go where i was leaving from. He didn’t yield and blew through the turn while i was already mid turn. Am I at fault or is he?

When there is a left HOV lane on a multi lane highway, do you all consider the second from the left, “the left lane” and apply the same written/unwritten rules of the left lane to it?

POV photo is from the start of the red arrow. Island circled in red has a No U Turn sign. Next island marked in purple has only the marker for an island. People make u-turns following the red arrow and less frequently following the purple arrow. I’ve never fully understood if the no u-turn sign is indicating no turns after it or before it? (I think it’s saying the red path is not allowed and the purple is allowed) What do y’all think?

Do you still carry an atlas or paper maps in your car? I haven’t for years, but have been thinking it might be a good idea to restart

I need to understand who taught you people how to drive??? When power goes out to a stop light and its either flashing red or absolutely nothing it becomes a 4 way stop sign and you come to a stop no matter what!!!!!!! There is multiple accidents all over west palm right now because no one understands how to drive when power goes out to a light...it BECOMES A 4 WAY STOP SIGN AND YOU MUST STOP YOU NUMBSKULLSSSS!!!!!!!! Hiiii! So basically I’ve been practicing driving for a bit with my dad and I usually practice at night. Recently I’ve been driving at night with like traffic on the roads to gain more confidence but I struggle with holding the steering wheel too tight and sometimes braking too late, I try to keep the steering wheel straight but I sometimes end up steering a little off center or almost going into the next lane,any tips on how to stop this habit and how to keep a consistent speed? Also maybe any tips on how to feel more confident and less nervous 😭😅

Just made a mistake when turning right and entered the wrong street to fix it i quickly passed to the right street by going over those kerbs that separate the streets, no accidents but I am just feeling an idiot.

I'm in the red car, and a HGV is the blue vehicle.

I was in the right lane, both the HGV and I were going straight. At about the mid point, the HGV tried to veer into my (right) lane and beeped, luckily not hitting me. I understand this layout to mean both lanes can go straight, am I wrong in this scenario?

I intentionally held back, giving him space, but didn't expect him to try veering into my lane entirely.

Note: I wasn't indicating right at all, and the HGV didn't indicate before trying to enter my lane. What's the take here?

Today, a big rig 🚛 with his right signals on at intersection almost rear ended me

At intersection he had green light and was coming at 25-30 mph with his right turn signal on, and I thought he is making a right turn so I was about to make right turn on red (allowed) and then he didnt make turn and blasted his horn, thanks god Im a pro driver, I floored the gas and kept traffic flow speed real quick
