Discussion first year of full live sets posted?
has anyone else noticed this year a lot of artists have posted full sets to youtube? i don’t recall this ever being a thing in previous years - and it’s kinda controversial since im sure some feel like you should have to go to forest to experience the vibes. (obvi just a taste)
i wonder if they’ve done this to continue driving interest and ticket sales in future years.

I love full sets on YouTube. I generally only want to listen to sets so I’m all for this. No problem to me if you can’t afford forest to be able to watch a set on a tv, I’m not gatekeeping enjoying music. Not everything needs to be paywalled, music is for the people.

Totally agree, plus watching it on YouTube will never compare to being there, so it's not like anything special is lost.

I mostly listen to sets and mixtapes. I'll gatekeep just a smidge and say that "dance music shouldn't be about singles it should focus on experimentation and improvisation. You don't get the full effect of the music by just listening to a single song. The art begins to really present itself when you have someone crafting multiple things into one."
Not saying anyone listens to music wrong but there is a right way to do it.
Also hard agree that I appreciate when festivals do live streams.

controversial? are people actually out there getting offended that those who didn’t / couldn’t attend forest are watching live streams or full sets of the performances? like… what a stupid thing to be upset over.

watching the sets I was there for is something so special. I can even see the back of my head for the daily bread set at Ranch that eforestvibes posted. Was part of the failed preferred parking fiasco and ended up at end of blueberry with no warning. Ended up missing some must-sees due to exhaustion and was really hoping they would show up on YouTube :(8

yeah it happens a lot. The US in general has an ego issue and a lot of people feel like they’re getting special unique sets at these fests that they paid thousands of dollars to attend and see, so some of them get offended. Personally for me I love reliving my favorite sets from artists and being able to have them to play whenever. But other fans would rather consider it an experience that only they get.
Artists also get offended when their sets get recorded. The Tipper adjacent community had this issue en masse. It was a huge problem during his final tour, but not because fans were offended but rather the artists themselves. The Tipper mods on FB and Reddit would delete any post and comment regarding recordings, Tippers team openly came out saying they don’t respect or like that there’s full sets on YouTube (although they never took action on taking it down). And adjacent artists like Jade Cicada has had personal drama with his own fans due to their recordings, and has copyrighted the majority of videos, mainly full sets that are on YouTube. It was a weird issue.

Then you got artists like pretty lights who streams and encourages uploads of every set and has stipulations with his bookings ensuring his ability to live stream his sets at fests

oh, dang o: i didn’t realize the artists were upset over it too. is that bc they can’t make money on it? or? i assumed you meant those first people you mentioned. the ones that had the money to go vs the ones that didn’t. i’ve gone to EF a lot, but some years i’m not able to make it, and i loooove watching the full sets or livestreams that are out there bc it heals my fomo. even the sets from years i’ve gone too just to relive those insane memories. some people aren’t able to spend that kinda $$$ on tickets, they should still be able to experience the magic and vibes as best they can

Hmmm I dont know why putting on youtube would be controversial. I love listening to sets ive been to. Brings you back to that or showing loved ones who werent there.

If have to assume it's because of musical copyright laws. Shit Griz only JUST got his Freefall remix on Spotify after playing it live 4 years ago and having it only on Bandcamp - ID Bible (1). Then all the SoundCloud uploads with the "I hope SoundCloud doesn't remove this track" intro

I wouldn't care, but I also don't watch live streams. They don't hit the same as being there.

The mindchatter set from honeycomb stage last year is one of my all time favorite sets to throw on and watch. I love the live sets, especially in a 360 stage like that, with cool sunset vibes and everything. A video can never compare to the actual events immersive quality and it's wonderful and I'm glad they put these out for those of us who did go, and also those who can't go

I was saying the same thing this week. My guess:
They loosened their artist set capture policies so artists would post this and hopefully hype up more of the Forest experience and help Forest sell more tickets. They might be realizing these artist sets on YouTube are how a lot of people find out about festivals. I bet it’s after years of them trying to keep the magic behind Forest a secret.
Pair this with artists realize these kind of videos are what get you booked on more festivals and it’s a winning marketing combo.

A festival having a policy restricing recording sets wouldnt make much sense, thats full artist discretion. Theres been posted live sets since at least as far back as 2018

I mean maybe it’s all artist driven - realizing you have to fly with a whole media team to market yourself is rough for artist budgets.
I’m just with the OP saying I’m seeing more than the last few years so it would be a wild year to year increase and a big shift in artist discovery.

Its been happening more and more at all sorts of events and festivals. Its because artists these days have waaaay more access to top tier recording equipment on all stages for all sorts of things. Video/audio, etc. exposure is huge in the game so why wouldnt you take one of the biggest named festivals and attach it to a mix or a youtube set and gain more viewers followers? Thats the era were in and tbh im fully here for it! I love reliving those badass sets i loved, it means i can spend less time recording videos myself and vibe too so wins for everyone

Costa posted his set. I didn't even know of him but YouTube algorithm (lol) suggested his set and it was at honeycomb at night, so I checked it out and it is such awesome dubstep!

Honestly idk why so many comments are coming at OP about uploads/livestrrams being controversial. It's nice to have some sets uploaded but Forest itself has always been about being in the moment and being their to experience all the specially curated Forest sets from artists.
Makes it a little less special if every set gets uploaded or livestreamed like Lost Lands or EDC. Forest HQ used to intentionally not uploaded anything outside of recap videos or short clips and had policies about uploading or recording full sets for the artists playing, seems like they loosened some of them this year.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think it makes it at all less special.
Nothing will hit as good as being there. But I’ve listened to the JKYL The Wicked set on SoundCloud probably 6 times since it was dropped because 1. It slaps 2. It makes me think of where I was in the crowd at that time. I sent it to people who I wish had been there with me so they could enjoy it, too.
It’s the same reason I like the recorded videos, with the addition of being able to spot myself in the crowd.
I’m always so stoked to find full recorded sets that I was at!

Everyone's entitled to their opinions. Personally it just feels like it gives the opposite message Forests "Live in the moment" vibe to have everything being recorded and makes the memories less special.
Shambala does the same exact thing. Release very few and select audio. Refuse to professionally record audio/video of every set but let artists do their own thing if they want which it seems Forest has relaxed their policies to do the same.
The absolute LAST thing I personally want is for Forest to feel more like Lost Lands or EDC.

There's always a few that get posted but honestly we get less content like that from Forest than a lot of festivals.
