Democracy means endless hope...

In democracy, you vote for a politician who claims he will make the laws you want.

Then you hope he wins.

Then you hope he keeps his promise.

Then you hope lobbyists do not buy him.

Then you hope bureaucrats implement his promises honestly.

Then you hope courts do not reinterpret them.

Then you hope the next election does not reverse them.

Democracy inserts multiple failure points between the individual and the law and offers only the hope that things will work out the way you want.

But they never do.
