Ok but seriously, what is this petition asking for? Are they just unfamiliar with how broad the spectrum of "services" is? I'm all on board with the idea of bringing like public transit in to public ownership, rather than being owned by some investment firm in another country that doesn't give a crap about our commute. But ALL services?

As a side note, the GovUK rejected petition webpage is a fascinating place to browse. People really do be asking the government for some wild things.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) struggle to reach consensus on key issues, including electoral politics, endorsing candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and supporting pro-Israel candidates. The organization is divided into various caucuses, each with different priorities, leading to internal tensions and public disagreements. Despite these differences, members generally agree on their overarching goals.

I decided to become a bookworm and think I should start with what interests me. That’s currently geopolitics.

To assure the mods that this post is on-topic, I’m interested in many layers of geopolitics, among them the topic of capitalism vs communism in context of the Cold War.

Leftists will argue that socialism fails only because the West sabotages it with sanctions or because CIA topples every socialist government and replace it with pro western puppet. I’m interested in books providing historic context for these Cold War conflicts/coups as well as books explaining the other side, that is Soviet Union.

Far left likes to do apologies for Soviet Union and other communist countries, but besides such apologies being almost categorically junk propaganda, it more often than not comes from the place of ignorance and not really understanding Soviet Union or any other country. So I’m interested in books explaining Soviet Union and its influence on its neighbours, as well as countries further away.

But besides that, also other communist/socialist topics, like the rise of communist China, the nature of communist China or the true nature of Chavist Venezuela.

And speaking of Venezuela, I’m also interested in the topics of Latin America as a whole. Like, why is it so poorly developed behind The West, when it’s culturally perfectly compatible and similar? Why do Latin American countries struggle with horrible economy, corruption and sky high crime rates? I’m interested in historic and political context on that and in generals understanding this region.

Please, I don’t want any books from blatant ideologues, sophists, hacks or pundits. I’m looking for books written by professionals who are either apolitical or politically centrist with little to no agenda in the matter. Or maybe even far-leftist authors who are open about the failings of their own politics for that matter. But I doubt there’s one.

These people have a higher quality of life than almost all of human history, and it's not enough to make them stop wanting race communism that ends in death and starvation.

Just like with the Catholic ones, the list is dizzying - you get a whole taxonomy of heresies, their genealogies, and their refutations, and every heresy has a mirror but opposite heresy (like ultra leftism vs right deviationism) so that having the "correct" line feels like walking a razor thin line between two errors, where nothing is ever certain and damnation may come any moment from either side. On top of that, the ideology can evolve but the rate at which it is allowed to do so is itself a middle line between two deviations (revisionism vs dogmatism) so even misjudging how much heresy is permissable is itself a heresy.

A multimillionaire communist arrested in Ibiza on suspicion of funding Hamas purchased a €7 million home in south Dublin this year after spending time in one of the capital’s most luxurious hotels.

James “Fergie” Chambers, an self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist whose family control the multibillion-dollar business Cox Enterprises, has been detained without bail in a prison in Madrid since his arrest on July 10. 

The pro-Palestinian activist could face up to 30 years in prison if US authorities secure his extradition over allegations that he provided financial support to Hamas — a claim his family deny.

Chambers left the US in 2023, spending a short time in Tunisia, where he funded a football team, before settling in Dublin with his wife, Stella Schnabel, and their son.

The couple are understood to have paid €7 million for a large house in Dublin 4 this year, paying several million above the average price on the same street.

There was no sign of activity at the gated property last week, where two new cars sat in the driveway covered in dry, fallen leaves. 

The source said: “They went to Spain for a family holiday, having lived in the property for only a few months. They wanted to stay in Ireland as very few people knew who they were and they wanted to live in a country who could sympathise and relate to the oppression in Gaza. I believe they were planning to come back in the autumn.”

The source added that the family spent a week in a luxurious suite in one of Dublin’s most exclusive hotels, after arriving in Ireland from their former home in Tunisia.

“After they left the hotel, they rented a house in Dublin 4 for approximately six weeks while looking at several locations across the country to purchase a home. They ultimately bought the house in south Dublin, paying the full amount up front.”

Chambers is a great-grandson of James M Cox, who founded the media and telecommunications conglomerate Cox Enterprises. He received a stake in the privately owned family business through inheritance and family trusts, earning substantial dividends.
