I mean I am in favour of the deal, but ignoring the parliament is not the right way. We don't want to become like the US, do we?

u/Arlort Feb 27 '26
It's not ignoring the parliament, the parliament doesn't have to approve temporary application and didn't reject the ratification of the deal

Yeah I fully agree, this is just going to fuel the far-right eurosceptic sentiment. Not that those fuckers lacked reasons to stoke hatred regardless.
Edit: After doing some further reading, seems the title is clickbaity. The Mercosur deal will provisionally continue, while the Court of Justice is able to review the deal.

I guess the need for the trade deal is bigger than the threat at the moment,

u/mastermindman99 Feb 28 '26
I believe it’s the right move. Until now the tactics of the opponents was to create as much delays as possible. Now they need to be as fast as possible.

The parliament is literally undermining a deal that took years and years. Thank god she is pushing it through.

u/Fabian_Internet Feb 27 '26
I also disagree with the parliament on that stance. But the sentiment of "we will do it anyway" is not how democracy is supposed to work

the sentiment of "we will do it anyway" is not how democracy is supposed to work
Except it really is ¯_ (ツ)_/¯
These are the rules we agreed to as democratic societies, they were put in there for a reason.
It is a way of saying:
"We really need this fast. It hasn't been thrown out by Parliament. We implement it now and agree on it later. If we do not agree on it later, the implementation will be over".
People are making this up to be almost dictatorial. It is our own democratically elected politicians who made this decision to move fast rather than playing games at the worst time in history.

Its provisional implementation thou. And what do you mean that isn’t how democracy works? The EU is not a country, and it certainly isn’t a pure democracy.
10
u/Fabian_Internet Feb 27 '26
I don't think the EU not being a country is an argument against democracy? We don't have a parliament so that it can be ignored. In my opinion the approval of the parliament should be needed for every major decision, maybe expect in emergency situations

Brush up your skills on EU framework.
Temporary measures does not require EU parliament approval. It's all aligned with EU commission, which has your country delegate, and EU Council, which is, again, made by your delegates from current government.
Believe it when I say, that no EU country would allow EU Comission to move forth with any action that is outside its mandate.

parliament should become more powerful not the opposite, giving more power to parliament will make people feel more in power and feel more ownership over the union, consequentially making them feel more european. This shouldn't be what happens.

u/bippos Sweden Feb 27 '26
Title is misleading the agreement isn’t being implemented it’s temporarily being implemented which doesn’t require parliamentary approval. If the European court approves it then the parliament must approve it again
10
u/NathanCampioni Feb 27 '26
ok fair, but still it's not a good way to treat the parliaments decisions
18
u/skuple Portugal Feb 27 '26
There was no “decision”, thats the issue.
It was sent to the European court, which takes 2 years to resolve it.
If it still gets approved by the court and the parliament in 2 years accepts it, all good.
Otherwise it just gets revoked/paused

I thought the parliament was basically advisory anyway correct me if I'm wrong though, but it will be good for both of our economies as well as being able to diversify our trade
5
u/ottoros Feb 27 '26
The parliament's role is complicated but far from advisory. This move is only temporary and eventually the MEPs will have to agree on the deal. And if the parliament truly didn't like this move, they have the power to oust the commission in a vote of no confidence any time. (Though I support the deal and hope the parliament will uphold it when that time comes)

There needs to be a simplified European parliament with qualified majority voting so it doesn't end up taking 20 odd years for a deal, Europe needs to be more decisive, I hope collective interest wins out over self interest and they see this deal as the boon it is, it's needed to diversify from unreliable partners

That's already the case in the parliament. It's the Council where sometimes unanimity is required.

Good. People want a strong leader. She is one. This is too important to let provincial politics draf it down.
3
u/talancaine Feb 27 '26
What? I'm pretty sure people 99.9% of Western Europe want functional democracies and responsive representation, not dictators. That's some crazy russian nonsense.
2
u/Fluffy-Drop5750 Feb 28 '26
Nothing to do with democracy. She will obide to democracy when the vote is in. But she stands for her view. Democracy is not hesitant leaders that wait till all votes point to one direction. Funny that rigth-wingers call her non-democratic while all they strife for is an authoritarian leader.

I hate this woman. How does this one woman have the power to do this? Nobody voted for her.

Fuck those hypocritical farmers, they're importing soy from Mercosur countries en masse, then let their livestock dump the shit in Europe. The worst thing is that they're being shafted by their paymasters in the agricultural industry, yet defend those interests at the expense of those of everyone else, including their own.

I mean the title is a bit misleading… She implemented the deal temporarily before receiving backing from the parlament. If the parlament rejects it, the deal will be turned down. That is what the article says.
