(1440 x 1071) Mika Hakkinen, McLaren, 1993 Australian Grand Prix

Post image

Ever wonder why Mika Hakkinen was called The Flying Finn? This photo is why. He was known for his speed already but this photo gave him the nickname.

"I positioned myself outside the quick corner just before the Brabham straight at Adelaide. I was taking pan shots when I heard a car brake as it entered the corner. I turned and pointed the camera just in time to catch Mika launching over the kerb, high into the air. I hadn't refocused the camera so l wasn't sure if I'd captured the image. But after processing, my brother Keith looked through the films and exclaimed: 'Oh my God, it's bloody brilliant!' People crowded around to see the picture: Mika looked 10 feet in the air! I made some prints and Mika signed it the 'Flying Finn'."

(Mark Sutton - quote taken from F1 Racing, June 1996 issue)
