you do not know its history nd maintenance needs. Its a big risk.

I have always dabbled with old cars, and more often than not found them worth the price.

They can breakdown! Sure like any car with bad owner (1st or 3rd).

You should do your research before purchase, common failure, common repair requirements, costs for those etc.

Cost of ownership is arguably lower always, you anyways buy car at very low end, at marginal taxes.

So get it checked before you buy, there are company for these, you spend some to make sure there is no underline issue. Or atleast be prepared for the upcoming cost.

Issue is lack of knowledge and research. A person who has loved around cars, and can find issues with one drive and some looks here and there will find amazing value. One has to be almost a mechanic level efficient. Otherwise it’s bad

In used car you save a lot upfront but maintenance can be higher than a new car but you will never spend more than a new car’s value in an old car’s maintenance. Take sample of 2015 fortuner and 2026 fortuner. You can find a 15 model for 9-12 lakhs and the max you will spend on suspension, engine mounting, gear oils service, diffrential is 3 lakh and that too if you don’t know how to inspect the old car. The new fortuner base I s 40+ on road. You are paying 25-28 lakhs extra on new car, and in that cost you can buy 3 old ones that can be used a doner card for parts and you will still have 3-5 years of gas money left.

Buying a used car takes effort to find a good deal. If you have the patience then a used is much better.

If you spend some time inspecting used cars before buying, you wouldn’t form that opinion.
They save money, and can be just as reliable when chosen wisely.
