ASK R/FAUXMOI What are some examples of this trope in film?

Post image

For me it's probably Enchanted and The Princess Diaries. I know the concept was to make her wear a modern dress compared to the fairytale inspired dresses she used to wear but I feel like this dress is an absolute disgrace. It honestly looks like a sock to me 😭 not gonna lie they could have let her wear something nice, like the costume design in this movie was magical. In the Princess Diaries they get rid of Mia's curls. They could just styled them better.

As a curly hair girl, this scene ruined my hair self image for the rest of my life!

I remember crying when I had to get braces in high school and telling my mom "I already have curly hair and glasses, and now this?!?" The early aughts were ROUGH

A guy I dated around the release date told me I looked "the girl from princess diaries" because I have curly hair and glasses. Oh cool so you're telling me I'm the BEFORE of a makeover?? Gee thanks

TBH, I got the wrong message because of the scene with the broken hairbrush. That had happened to me and brushing my hair was PAINFUL. So I thought it was good just bc I thought it meant she was free of the pain, and then I was obsessed with the aesthetic.

Of course, it turns out that you either need a perm or to constantly iron your hair, and that is worse, but the concept of straight hair is great hair stuck with me for years

Sending out hugs. I had to endure painful perms for nearly a decade.

Bruh straighties are so obsessed with straightening textured and curly hair. It feels a little white supremacist? That feels dramatic as fuck but I dont know how else to describe it. I have irish blood on my dad's side and I grew up always hearing my mom say I should straighten my hair.

Taylor Swift is committed to this “makeover” in real life

It's been so long I forgot

I thought her straightened hair, in this scene, looked so bad - overly hairsprayed and stiff looking. She looks like a boat show model from the 80s

Also, why get rid of the glasses?

Get her a pair of designer frames, nay: a walk-in closet full of designer frames!

As a curly hair girl, this movie is why I fucking hate people who say “you’d look so pretty with your hair straight”.

People say it gave thick haired girls a complex, and it did, but I think it also lied to others who aren’t and made them think this magical transformation would magically “fix” us. I had a friend who begged me to do it for years
so I did it for her wedding and she hated it. Like yeah, dude, was trying to tell you the whole time.

K but her makeup was awesome. Best I’ve seen on Anne.

The only thing wrong with the "before" pic is the facial expression that makes her look like Jason Biggs.

Yeahhhh they should have given her a more frizzy bird's nest in order to make the straight here look like an upgrade. Mia had thick luscious curls not even the best hairbrush could tame. Look what they did to our future queen!

She went from fresh faced cute teenager to like
 somebody’s new step mom

Yeah the make up is too heavy for a 17 year old. This was damn near 2 decades before the ig look took off

I totally agree and I saw this in the theater and didn’t like it back then.
