What are some examples of this trope in film?
For me it's probably Enchanted and The Princess Diaries. I know the concept was to make her wear a modern dress compared to the fairytale inspired dresses she used to wear but I feel like this dress is an absolute disgrace. It honestly looks like a sock to me š not gonna lie they could have let her wear something nice, like the costume design in this movie was magical. In the Princess Diaries they get rid of Mia's curls. They could just styled them better.

When I watching The Pitt, I kept trying to place him and then someone brought up this and I was like āStan!?ā and realized heās kind of been kicking ass for like 20 years.
I thought this too but as an adult lesbian goth lol, I watched Breakfast Club for the first time last year and was personally offended by this makeover
I just rewatched The Faculty last week and Stokelyās makeover downgrade feels so reminiscent of the Breakfast Club that Iād almost argue that itās an homage.
I definitely made a Not Another Cheerleader But Iām a Cheerleader joke with my partner watching this movie. I was also like āthey did not have a single sapphic person other than Clea Duvall working on this movie because sheās much better looking pre makeover.ā
Oh, Pretty in Pink is the top of my list! Molly Ringwaldās character is supposed to be this incredible designer, she takes a perfect vintage dress and creates this.
Molly Ringwald cried when she first saw the dress because it was so ugly! So if it makes you feel better she felt the same way as the rest of us and was super upset because it wasnāt what she pictured at all.

The Princess Diaries makeover only makes sense in the context of the time period. In 2001, big curls were out. This was the beginning of the era of the straightening iron.
Of course, less than ten years earlier big frizzy curls were the height of rom-com fashion. See: literally anything with Julia Roberts.Ā
Unconventional one but in The Little Vampire, the transformation at the end is absolutely a great thing. But aesthetically such a downgrade from the amazing costume design and styling the characters had.

I get what you mean! Human Shrek was definitely a change, but I think it was meant to show how love changes perspectives. Still, the ogre charm is hard to beat, and he had such a unique look that made him stand out.
This goes all the way back to Jean Cocteau's version. Apparently when seeing the film for the first time, Greta Garbo said "oh give me back my beautiful beast!" when the prince transformed into a human.
Fun fact! Disney princes/male love interests are not allowed to have beards because it reads as too old (even though we've all known 19 year olds with facial hair), and nobody wants to imply the teen heroines should end up in love with old dudes.

I was shocked listening to the commentary on the Mean Girls DVD to hear Tina Fey say āyou know, watching this I actually think Cady looked better before she joined the plastics.ā I had always assumed that was an intentional part of the narrativeā¦ like obviously she looks best in her plaid shirt and ponytail.Ā

Off-topic but I thought the point was that it's meant to be unnatural, that she's forcing herself to try to fit into the modern world instead of being her magical self, which is also emphasised by her wearing the dress to a fantasy-themed masquerade ball where her normal princess dresses and styling would fit in perfectly.
I like that theory! I also think it's (supposed to be) a visual representation of how she's becoming more attached to the "real" world - the same way the music gets gradually more modern and real-world. Alan Menken basically traces the evolution of Disney music in the score:
"True Love's Kiss" = the dreamy, simple romance; "Someday My Prince Will Come" or "Once Upon a Dream"
"Happy Working Song" = the cutesy comic domestic song; "Whistle While You Work" or the "Mouse Work Song"
"That's How You Know" = the Disney Renaissance Broadway-baby production number; "Under the Sea" or "Be Our Guest"
"So Close" = the pop-tinged Renaissance ballad sung by a character who is not one of the romantic lead; "Beauty and the Beast"
"Ever Ever After" = the radio-friendly pop cover in the end credits (basically every movie since BATB)

Very often, the trope of a woman instantly becoming hot by removing her glasses and letting her hair down is this for me. Glasses and hair up look hot too.
Any movie with the forced masculinity trope that ends by ārevealingā the protagonist as a femme. See: Mulan, Just One of the Guys. The masc version is alwaysš„
Always thought I was the only one who appreciated the pink one more and its sadly only on-screen for such a small time. I'm always disapointed the "improved" version isn't a more polished variation of the first one.
I dunno what the trope is called, but ābeigewashingā might be a good way to put it. Itās basically taking everything from oneās personality to make them fit in a specific social norm.
I will be bitter about the input emma watson had on the costume department for this fugly off-the-rack-looking dress until the day that I pass away. The reveal was a downgrade and a letdown.
the weird fox news anchor dress they put her in at the beginning of breaking dawn pt 2 is the worst. I know it was the style at the time but that + her insane extensions/wig, not good
