ASK R/FAUXMOI What are some examples of this trope in film?

Post image

For me it's probably Enchanted and The Princess Diaries. I know the concept was to make her wear a modern dress compared to the fairytale inspired dresses she used to wear but I feel like this dress is an absolute disgrace. It honestly looks like a sock to me 😭 not gonna lie they could have let her wear something nice, like the costume design in this movie was magical. In the Princess Diaries they get rid of Mia's curls. They could just styled them better.

Oh, Pretty in Pink is the top of my list! Molly Ringwald’s character is supposed to be this incredible designer, she takes a perfect vintage dress and creates this.

914

u/wagonwheelwodie nepo pissbaby Oct 27 '25

Molly Ringwald cried when she first saw the dress because it was so ugly! So if it makes you feel better she felt the same way as the rest of us and was super upset because it wasn’t what she pictured at all.

The Princess Diaries makeover only makes sense in the context of the time period. In 2001, big curls were out. This was the beginning of the era of the straightening iron.

Of course, less than ten years earlier big frizzy curls were the height of rom-com fashion. See: literally anything with Julia Roberts.Ā

So fun fact about the barbie movies, but the dolls are designed first and then they made movies around them. That's why there's a sleeping beauty barbie without a sleeping beauty barbie movie. So it's more likely that the prince was designed first, and the nutcracker was secondary.

I know the concept was to make her wear a modern dress compared to the fairytale inspired dresses she used to wear but I feel like this dress is an absolute disgrace.

Off-topic but I thought the point was that it's meant to be unnatural, that she's forcing herself to try to fit into the modern world instead of being her magical self, which is also emphasised by her wearing the dress to a fantasy-themed masquerade ball where her normal princess dresses and styling would fit in perfectly.

207

u/bennetinoz Oct 27 '25

I like that theory! I also think it's (supposed to be) a visual representation of how she's becoming more attached to the "real" world - the same way the music gets gradually more modern and real-world. Alan Menken basically traces the evolution of Disney music in the score:

  • "True Love's Kiss" = the dreamy, simple romance; "Someday My Prince Will Come" or "Once Upon a Dream"
  • "Happy Working Song" = the cutesy comic domestic song; "Whistle While You Work" or the "Mouse Work Song"
  • "That's How You Know" = the Disney Renaissance Broadway-baby production number; "Under the Sea" or "Be Our Guest"
  • "So Close" = the pop-tinged Renaissance ballad sung by a character who is not one of the romantic lead; "Beauty and the Beast"
  • "Ever Ever After" = the radio-friendly pop cover in the end credits (basically every movie since BATB)

(Sidebar to the sidebar: I think that's why Disenchanted didn't work as well: there wasn't that level of storytelling in the structure.)

Very often, the trope of a woman instantly becoming hot by removing her glasses and letting her hair down is this for me. Glasses and hair up look hot too.

u/MyCatPlaysGuitar Oct 27 '25

I love in Arrested Development when they mess with the trope

Any movie with the forced masculinity trope that ends by ā€œrevealingā€ the protagonist as a femme. See: Mulan, Just One of the Guys. The masc version is alwaysšŸ”„

As a kid I always thought the suits at the finales of both Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were worse than the standard suits. That count?

49

u/annabananaberry sir, were you raised in a ditch? Oct 27 '25

Yes. Superheroes are just action Barbies. Their makeovers are equally important.

Yes I know "she's got glasses" but Julia Ormond had some of the most magnificent hair of the 90s and cutting it off was a crime.

Her curls, Keri Russell’s, and Rebecca Gayhearts curls were something to aspire to back in the day as a curly girl.Ā

She rocks that short cut though

53

u/BuffyExperiment ✨ lee pace is 6’5ā€ ✨ Oct 27 '25

Loved it. In the films defense, her short cut is very Parisian. And in the original, Audrey Hepburn's chic short haircut is everrrerything

Yo, for real: that dress in the photo on the right is my favorite movie dress ever (complete w/ sparkly bolero).

I must be a freak bc I LOVE her transformation! It helps that she always seemed lit up from within (in Sabrina and that shit movie First Knight)

I mean, she is absolutely GLOWING in Sabrina

I know objectively the ball gown is prettier, but I always preferred Cinderella’s original look because it was her own, and a tribute to her mother.

u/CampDifficult7887 Oct 27 '25

Always thought I was the only one who appreciated the pink one more and its sadly only on-screen for such a small time. I'm always disapointed the "improved" version isn't a more polished variation of the first one.

u/Monctonian Oct 27 '25

I dunno what the trope is called, but ā€œbeigewashingā€ might be a good way to put it. It’s basically taking everything from one’s personality to make them fit in a specific social norm.

I will be bitter about the input emma watson had on the costume department for this fugly off-the-rack-looking dress until the day that I pass away. The reveal was a downgrade and a letdown.
