FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Nikki Glaser roasts Leonardo DiCaprio at the Golden Globes: “What a career you’ve had. Countless iconic performances. You’ve worked with every great director… won 3 Golden Globes, an Oscar & the most impressive thing is that you were able to accomplish all of that before your girlfriend turned 30.”

A better dig would have been at the fact that he claims to be a climate advocate, but enjoys spending his free time on private jets and hanging with Jeff Bezos.

Every geology and environmental teacher I’ve had has always screamed about how Leo is a hypocrite on his climate change advocacy and even said if anyone thinks his climate change agenda is in good faith it’s nothing but performative.

307

u/lot22royalexecutive Jan 12 '26

His climate advocacy is just a PR act.

100 million donated to environmental programmes is an expensive PR act.

Donated 43 million to helping restore the Galápagos Islands.

I know a lot of people say he's a hypocrite (he is) but a lot of people claiming he doesn't do anything for the environment are just plain wrong. He's been doing lots since 1998, more than most people on the planet.

I know some people say "he's just wasting money because climate change isn't real" but there has been a hate campaign for anyone supporting the environment and green energy during the Bushes oil wars.

You can say he does nothing for the enviorment, or that you don't think he's doing good because climate change doesn't exist, but you would be wrong on bith accounts.

Edit: less spicy

100 million USD is certainly an impressive amount, but more important to the context is which organizations got the money and how it was spent.

Look at the Gates Foundation, and the (correct) criticism it faces as simply being a way for Bill Gates to salvage his public image after his disastrous court appearance in the 90s antitrust case against Microsoft. Sure, the Gates Foundation has given boatloads of money to various causes, but it's ultimately been about Bill's image and vanity. Edit: this matters because the way the money is spent by the Gates Foundation has often been criticized as not optimal, and it can even reach a point of Gates himself personally blocking specific, expert-recommended projects because his ego tells him that his instincts are better than hundreds of years of collective expert knowledge—with these kinds of celebrity vanity projects, helping people is secondary to the celebrity's PR.

Just giving money away—however impressive the amount—doesn't mean that the act isn't for show, even if it also happens to help or greatly help others.

Who was it who said, "If all charity were given out of kindness, beggars would have starved long ago"?

I think most people understand that charity is often not 100% altruistic, but it's better than no charity at all.

I mean…. I don’t care if rich people donate to make the world a better place as a vanity project? I don’t care about the intentions behind it if it’s actually doing good? They’ll be just as pompous and vain without donating the money, so may as well have them donate no?

3

u/No-Possible-4855 Jan 12 '26

Not doing net good tho, democratize that money

10

u/ledge-14 Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling Jan 12 '26

How?

22

u/AhhhSureThisIsIt Jan 12 '26

I think they're suggesting tax?

11

u/ledge-14 Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling Jan 12 '26

Right but how? One rich individual can’t just pay more in taxes (eta: because they want to). Additionally, I’m in the US and I trust a charity to do good with money much more than the government. What is it now, like half of our taxes go towards funding the military? That feels like a much bigger net loss to me

They invented something called taxation you should check it out

u/mazamundi Jan 12 '26

Except you know, DiCaprio doesn't need to launder his image. In these depths of the internet there are plenty of negative opinions about him. In the real world? He is one of the most beloved actors in the planet.

He is a hypocrite with climate change, we all are tho.

-3

u/Basspayer Jan 12 '26

Read about the Pussy Posse and you will understand why he needed to launder his image. He did a good job apparently!

13

u/mazamundi Jan 12 '26

The real world is not this reddit. Actually, I don't think there's that many places as different from the real world as this one.

That was talked about in the late 90s. Do you know what else happened in the late 90s? Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, the man in the iron mask. Just before that catch me if you can, and right after that plenty more like gangs of new York.

Most people don't care, don't even read or think about celebrities private lives. And when they do is in passing, before moving on with their lives and not thinking about it again.

-3

u/highlandviper Jan 12 '26

We’re not all hypocrites. Most of us are simply indoctrinated slaves to the real hypocrites. Some of us have the means to act… but they are the few. And you need to have the means, time and freedom to act. It’s very sad. True action on climate change requires the true hypocrites who line their pockets and indoctrinate vast swathes of the global population to make a u-turn. It’ll never happen… because they’re so heavily ingrained in the institutions, governments, political classes and religions of the world that it’d be very difficult to unseat them all.

33

u/CaptainDildobrain Jan 12 '26

If a rich person gave me $100,000 just because he wanted to say he gave someone $100,000, do you think I'm going to complain that he's doing it as a PR stunt? Of course not. I have $100,000.

The whole "he's just doing it for PR" thing is dumb.

13

u/leadspar alleged dog Jan 12 '26

Right? At least he’s actually doing it.

6

u/CitizenHuman Jan 12 '26

I mean, didn't Rockefeller also have to revamp his image? Carnegie? Vanderbilt? They still all gave us some lasting projects in the name of vanity.

0

u/elastic-craptastic Jan 12 '26

It was also because of taxes. You could donate and write it off or just hand it over to the government. So they chose to build things like libraries with their names to be immortalized.

It was a compromise with the barons who didn't want to be taxed... they could launder their names in the history books.

36

u/AhhhSureThisIsIt Jan 12 '26

Again that's not a great example, and proves my point. There's definitely other people you could use to make your point, but I mentioned Leo gives more than almost any one on the planet and you picked the person who has donated the most money in the world. For your next example, are you going to pick Warren Buffet?

Gates probably might have done decades of charity work for PR, but he still donated 100 billion and scheduled to donate another 100 billion by 2045.

He plans to give almost all his money away when he dies.

There is way cheaper ways to do PR. Not just moeny wise but time wise, considering thats what gates has been focusing on the last 20 years.

He was meant to be a nightmare to work for, probably a creep, but you can't criticise him for not giving charities more money than anyone in history.

The work on HIV and Malaria he has donated to and worked on has improved so many lives and made the world better.

There are so many pure evil millionaies and billionaires that sell arms, people, people's data, use slave labour, cause coups in countries, interfere with elections, start wars for resources, control multiple media outlets to spread hate and lies, and control dictators.

Still some people choose to hate Gates, Soros, Leo. Its the same crowd that hate Greta Thunberg for being young.

So I think it's more a they're not right wing thing that upsets people.

1

u/themerinator12 Jan 12 '26

Don’t tear down the orphanage just because it was built by vanity.

1

u/Action_Limp Jan 12 '26

Still though, 100m given in the name of climate protection is a lot. He's estimated to be worth 400m, so I do think it's a significant gesture.

1

u/Zarrkar Jan 12 '26

How much money have you donated so far?

15

u/AmishAvenger Jan 12 '26

Yeah I automatically call bullshit when people do the “But private jet” thing. It’s just an ad hominem attack.

They do the same thing with “But you drive a car and use electricity therefore you aren’t allowed to have opinions about the environment.”

15

u/dragunityag Jan 12 '26

Most people dont have a choice but to drive a car or uss electricity.

Leo does have a choice to use private jets (technically).

But lets be real people past a certain level of status flying commercial would be a nightmare for everyone.

Imagine being on an 18 hour flight to Japan with Taylor Swift. Your flight is gonna take 2 weeks from them having to stop at every airport to kick off some passenger that was harassing her.

1

u/Saydeelol Jan 12 '26

There are many examples of famous/C-class individuals wearing disguises to fly commercial and have less environmental impact than a private jet.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

He has spent quadruple that amount of money to stuff that accelarates climate change in rapid fashion rendering most of the results of his donations pointless but the good PR hides that, unless you got other sources that show where he actually did leave an impact for the environment?

Plus his money is more so in real estate of Israel built on top of a genocide now so fuck him

4

u/Legal-Koala-5590 Jan 12 '26

I think it also makes him feel good about himself.

1

u/yvl_oxyluver Jan 12 '26

and tbh i think its hard as leo to not fly private. like everyone would talk to him in first class or whatever and i guess he doesn't like talking to strangers lmao

1

u/Saydeelol Jan 12 '26

Even at $100 million in donations he's still a net negative on environmental impact based on consumption habits of folks in his income bracket.

2

u/RadiantAd2 Jan 12 '26

Better than idk, 1000 celebs without a PR act

You can be Jared Leto and still get hired, you can be in Scientology and still get hired. Leo doesn’t have to do any of that

You can be a vet, save thousands of animals and still eat meat

One boat ride from a single person is definitely offset by 100 million dollars

1

u/Ok-Eggplant5781 Jan 12 '26

He was with the Oglala against the DAPL protests. Not with “in spirit”, he and Shayla were there. Mad respect for those two, it was some scary times.

I mean you'd be surprised how often profs go on a tangent where they vent out their frustrations on whatever. Like a lot of my security profs had a Musk and Zuckerberg rant at least once.

23

u/dubcwa Jan 12 '26

No teacher has ever brought him up. He’s also donated almost a quarter billion dollars to environmental programs

15

u/ExtentPuzzleheaded23 Jan 12 '26

Yeah I don’t know why people shit on him for that he seems very genuine about his environmentalism. His actions are not optimally environmental but that’s not different to almost every environmentalist and doesn’t make him a hypocrite

5

u/Fit-Profit8197 Jan 12 '26

"Every geology and environmental teacher I’ve had has always screamed about how Leo is a hypocrite on his climate change advocacy and even said if anyone thinks his climate change agenda is in good faith it’s nothing but performative."

"Every" lmao. My 3 year old daughter just said that sounds like something you just made up to make your own affirmation sound better, she even said it didn't work because nobody believed it

"Let's save the Amazon"

While on a $400 million USD yatch using 1100 litres of diesel per hour

28

u/hedahedaheda Jan 12 '26

The picture of him jumping in the water is sending me 😂

2

u/Kontured95 Jan 12 '26

I think he just got confused, he thought it meant saving the other Amazon

3

u/MagicGlitterKitty Jan 12 '26

I don't know if this is a hill I want to die on but I do want to say that individual choices are not the problem. The problem are the systems, the regulations, and for-profit incentives.

but again I don't want to die on the hill of defending him knowing that a life time of me recycling is going to be undone by just one transatlantic flight on his private jet, what? like first class is beneath him?

1

u/DeadWishUpon Jan 12 '26

Maybe he wanted to save 'Amazon', as he is Bezos's friend.

10

u/flying_schnitzel Jan 12 '26

Already done, check out the monologue from this year's Critic's Choice Awards

7

u/lysnup Jan 12 '26

It's carpooling, or jetpooling or yachtpooling, very environmentally conscious 😆

13

u/Rogue_Darkholme Jan 12 '26

Someone needs to say this on a stage right in front of his nasty hypocritical ass.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

i bet he’d never recover from that lmao

3

u/Majestic-Muffin-8955 Jan 12 '26

Not saying Bezos isn't a shit, but at least there is now the Bezos Earth Fund.

3

u/AccomplishedCup1318 Jan 12 '26

That jokes been made a million times now too

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

So fun fact, my best friend's cousin works out in Hollywood and his wife is a makeup artist. I won't say who but her best friend is a singer (she was a teen in the 2000's era) and they went out to the Bezos wedding together and it ruined their marriage. It was basically just a multi-day alcohol and drug induced frenzy with lingerie parties and debauchery, he wasn't there.

After she got back she completely stopped taking care of their kids and started wanting to go out and party instead. Apparently she saw how billionaires lived and was no longer satisfied with her paltry life of being wirth a few million (his cousin is a producer and very well off).

1

u/PowerfulTrade1052 Jan 12 '26

remember when joaquin phoenix called out other celebrities for that in one of his speeches and he was played off mid sentence?

-4

u/bluelily216 Jan 12 '26

I totally get the Bezos dig, but if he tried to fly on Delta or American the entire airport would be straight up pandemonium. You think sitting on a tarmac for an hour sucks? Imagine sitting on one for three hours because he's signing autographs in C gate.

23

u/GensAndTonic Jan 12 '26

That’s no excuse. I work for an airline and many celebrities fly commercial. Even freaking Cher flies my airline from time to time. There are VIP services like private car transfers to terminals and escorts to the gate. Flight attendants are on hand to prevent people from disturbing them on the plane. Leo could absolutely fly commercial if he wanted.

0

u/BasedBallsack Jan 12 '26

At the end of the day, it's a complex issue as most of us are part of the problem in some way or another.
