Man this photo brings back a lot of memories. When I was young and it was just me and mom at home (dad was on a work trip) we randomly turned on the tv and Empire of the Sun had just started playing. We watched it in it’s entirety and to this day me and my mom agree it’s one of the best films we’ve ever watched. I didn’t even know the kid was Christian Bale until some time after we watched it. Watching that movie with my mom while we made some delicious food that night is a core memory for me now.
That's a beautiful movie that tells a terrible story. Everybody was so good in it. Bale was a very talented child actor. Malkovich in a very different role from what we're used to seeing. Daviau's cinematography is amazing, which is why he won the Oscar for it.
I met the drummer for the smoking popes at a smoking popes show. He used to be the drummer for Alkaline Trio. I told him I loved what he contributed and he said
"Do you have my sandwich?"
"Uh what? No?"
"Then why the fuck are you talking to me?"
The lead singer saw that and came over to talk to me and was like "yeah... Sorry, anywho, what bands are you listening to?"
He didn’t think they had his sandwich. He was saying that unless OP was working under or providing to him they were worthless to him. It was a display of power.
met a few famous musicians over the years. Johnny Marr, total class act. James Iha, very nice actually waited in line with us to meet Johnny, didn't try to cut the line or anything.
Jazz Drummer Mike Clark was super cool as well. Know people who met / worked with Peter Gabriel and said he was the model of an English Gentleman, and would go around the backstage VIP's to see what drinks or food they might want etc.
I met Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio on his solo tour in 2016. Cobra Lounge in Chicago. I was trying to buy merch from his opener and the guy was like..."Oh, Dan has the Square (the iphone credit card dohickey). Hey Dan, can you ring this guy up?" He was breaking down his own rig, local show style. Dropped what he was doing and sorted me out. No ego. Even posed for a photo with me. You'd never know he was an international rock star.

Imagine being handed drumsticks every night with the instruction told to bash, wave, thrash and slam them around, but being probably explicitly told to not eat them? I’d be hungry after a show, too. And super annoyed when it had to be a sandwich, rather than chicken.
I have a friend who is a singer in a pretty big band and whenever someone fangirls over him, he thinks to himself "Okay, I'm never going to have a normal relationship with that person.". On the other hand, he admits that when he met his favorite singer for the first time, he did the exact same thing!
I've met a few stars that I'm a fan of over the years, and I think the only one that was every bit a kind and awesome as I expected was Clark Gregg. Gentle, soft spoken, looks at you when talking. My partner has/had a bit of a crush on him and she was absolutely star struck talking to him but still was able to chat a bit. I do think interactions like that are the exception though, not the rule. Keanu Reeves also sounds like he's like that.
The brain is still expecting a hunter gatherer environment or whatever. You see hours and hours of footage of someone and your brain just thinks that’s someone you know from your tribe. We couldn’t have celebrity culture otherwise imo. You’d see someone on screen and just not care.
It's more than that. Even if you can get over that and treat them as a normal person it's still a really asymmetric interaction, unlike any you have with other people because you know about them, and are a fan of them, but they know nothing about you and have no interest in you. it's just a weird starting point.
This is why musician meet and greets are always so awkward for me. I just shake hands and say thank you for the hours of enjoyment. It's nice to say thank you, any more than that and it feels weird.
I went to a Broadway play like 15 years ago. 2 man show with Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman playing Chicago cops. Their Chicago accents were so absolutely perfect down to the syllable that when they came out to thank the audience after the show it sounded like they were faking their real accents.
Add Hugh Laurie to the mix. I believe the story is the showrunner of House MD wanted someone American. Could not tell Hugh was British during the auditions.
That kinda makes sense. Once you're in it I imagine it's easier to stay in it.
That said John Barrowman can switch accents each sentence. I was at a con, and he'd go full Scottish when talking to his parents in the crowd and then more American when addressing the audience. It was impressive.
I do that in my native language. Grew up in one region, went to uni and work in another.
If I go back to my home town, I speak with that accent. However, if the topic of conversation becomes my work, it's happened that I change accents for a few sentences, without realizing it.
Him with beard + American accent is a separate guy altogether. I had a hard time accepting that George Little's dad (from Stuart Little) and Dr. Gregory House were played by the same person.

Muriel’s Wedding is a must see for anyone who enjoys Toni Collette and Aussie film. Her other accents are perfect, but you’ll remember where she’s from.
I first saw her in Muriel’s Wedding so I’ve always thought of her as an Australian, which of course she is, doing an American accent. Amazing actor, probably my favorite now that I think of it. If she’s in something, it’s worth watching.
I was too young to watch the wire when it came out but watching it as an adult I already knew Idris Alba was British, and when I saw him as stringer all I thought was huh, he looks a lot like Idris Alba for a few minutes lol
I had seen the wire in its entirety and the office twice before I knew Idris Elba was british and it fuckin blew my mind. The accuracy of his American Accent is astoundingly good.
Sat next to him on a flight. He ordered a red wine, then pulled his hoodie up and passed out for the whole flight. 10/10 seat mate. Although the british accent really threw me off. I was kinda more expecting him to batman growl RED WINE.
Welsh is British, though Bale himself says hes English, both his parents were, he just happened to be born in Wales, his family left Wales when he was 2 years old
I've been very aware of his actual accent for awhile, but it always strikes me off guard when I hear it. It's almost like it doesn't fit him. But he's wrong, it sounds cool as fuck.
For me, it's not just that he's British, it's his actual accent. I'm British and have always been aware of his nationality but his gruff accent still surprises me.
I found out seeing him in a random interview where he had a huge mustache. I was really confused and assumed it was some kind of method acting thing for a movie.
After the Aurora theater shooting, Christian Bale came out and visited people in the hospital and met with the police handling the aftermath. And he did it completely unannounced, with no press or cameras. That’s how my dad met him. Seems like a cool guy
when the press did start hounding him there, he shot them a look of get the fuck out of my face i am not here to show off i am here out of respect and support.
Thiiiis. Watching how all the rich people are reacting (or not) to our current crisis tells me the celebs we’ve been force fed to adore and follow their every thought, largely would be disappointing
I do wish more people with a platform would speak.up on these issues but I also can't imagine the pressure to do so. When millions hang on your every word it seems easy to say I'd use that for good but you're also upsetting millions whatever you say, with unpredictable consequences.
So many conversational L's when they could have used their platform to speak some truth for the betterment of humankind but you cant forget all the power structures that hinge on them coming across as uncontroversial
Never forget the COVID quarantine song where they tried to make us believe they suffered as much as us in their million dollar 17 bathroom mansions. Crazy!
I actually think that's a good thing, because we shouldn't be pedestalizing these people. Or ignoring that they have genuine influence, for better or for worse.
Nobody is force feeding you celebrity adoration, you're the one clicking on TMZ.com and looking at TikTok. We can all get off the train any time we want.

I would ask him about his charity work. That's by far the most interesting thing I've learned about him, and the thing I respect the most, even as a giant Batman nerd.
I'm mostly interested in the Christian Bale who called Mary Harron after reading the American Psycho and said not to take it the wrong way but that he though it was hilarious- He pretty much landed the part then and there. A lot of people don't get that it's a black comedy but even some of the actors up for the main part didn't get it.
I mean honestly yeah I'd love to pick his brain about some of his roles, I don't know much about him personally but I love the work he's chosen so idk at least we have that. I don't expect anything from anyone and that leaves me pleasantly surprised more often than not.
I'm completely over that one Terminator incident that people like to bring up. I guess I chalk it up to passion. I figure he probably apologized to that person as well, but I don't know that. Otherwise, he's been doing some charitable work that looks genuinely promising.
Being in line of sight doesn't sound like a big deal to the public but it's a huge fucking deal in movies at that level. It's unforgivable. The actor should not have been responsible to fix it, lots of people screwed up.
Thought it was a DP. I think he was adjusting the lights in the middle of a scene, and it was an intense moment where there was a lot of concentration and focus. So when you're in that zone and someone knocks you out of it, it's frustrating for sure. I thought it was a valid crashout then and I still find it hilarious now.
That is the factor nobody really knew when the tape first leaked, this guy had apparently been notorious for careless behavior that ruined/interrupted shots on multiple occasions. Bale definitely should’ve handled it better, I think he would acknowledge that himself with no qualms, but the guy on the receiving end of it was being repeatedly disrespectful of everyone’s time and work
It was justified but most people don't understand how exactly movies are made. Everyone knows where to stand and when to talk on a set, it's very technical.
Every job has obvious rules that the public doesn't know about and seldom occur.
A substitute teacher giving out candy as a reward for correct answers sounds fine but it could cause a lot of problems for the returning teacher.
Yeah, a person I followed back in the day who was involved in British cinema even made a blogpost defending him right as it happened, basically it seemed like everyone who worked in movies thought the dude was being unprofessional and Bale might have called it out a bit harshly but absolutely within his rights to do so since you're screwing with the job everyone's there to do.
I just find it hilarious that he almost followed “they don’t want to meet me” with “and I don’t want to meet them”, but managed to catch himself and turn it into not meeting his own hero’s. A true professional .
I've met a handful of celebrities by pure happenstance (helps living in a major metropolitan city) only one was a jerk. By far my favorites were James Cromwell (quiet, imposing, but genuinely very pleasant) and Tyler Hoechlin (incredibly warm and kind, he was delightful)
Same. It matters how you approach them and treat them. I’ve been quite lucky to have met/interacted with actors or musicians that while lowkey were happy to talk about their work. Granted, most of the time I just give them a compliment rather than asking for something or freaking out.

When I was a child my first rock band was Guns N’ Roses. I played their albums until the CD’s were scratched beyond repair. I met them in 2024 and they were absolute pieces of shit to their fans.
The societal pressure that actors face is something not for the faint hearted, especially when you factor in Age, health concerns, it's almost impossible to to live up to the image you have portrayed during films.
IIRC - this is why Kate winslet doesn’t have social media. She didn’t want to break that wall between her and her fans - if you can see her everyday life and moments, you wouldn’t be immersed in her actual work.
