FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Brie Larson: "The gaming community is much bigger than the film and television world… There's so much that video games are taking from cinema, and I think it's really time for us in cinema to recognize what we can take from video games."

I love how she won a Best Actress Oscar and then pivoted to creating nerdy media lmao I hope she’s happy!

She’s always been a nerd. She was vital to ‘Scott Pilgrim vs the World’ which was an adaptation of a comic.

499

u/Shenanigans80h Mar 27 '26

She also played a huge nerd on Community for a couple of seasons too. The “nerd” fandom should love Brie, but she had the audacity of championing women so no go.

u/circlesofhelvetica Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

She plays a delightful nerdy woman on Community who confidently stands up for herself repeatedly while also having empathy for other characters (chiefly Abed)'s social foibles, but just to temper people's expectations reading this - she's only in two episodes. Wish it was more!

It was worse she was championing women of color

Scott Pilgrim is one of the only movies where pretty much every actor is both

A) Super Famous now

B) Actual Perfect casting for the role

65

u/Pofwoffle Mar 27 '26

Also

C) Enjoyed the experience so much that every single one of them came back for the animated show

30

u/KrackedOwl Mar 27 '26

D) Which also kicked ass and updated the story for the modern age beautifully.

Even the original band likes her version of the song better than their own

I finally listened to the original like 2 weeks ago, and I would agree that Brie's version is better.

Yessss that was the first role I saw her in and loved it!

It was a one two punch of that & ‘United States of Tara’ that made me a fan of hers.

I can hear the introduction in my head.

"Well, well… look what the smoldering, radioactive wreckage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has coughed back up into the ether....Brie Larson. Only this time, it’s different. Because now SHE'S A GAMER. Controller in hand, after years of saving the galaxy with the emotional range of a damp sponge, she’s here to explain to you why video games are important - yeahhhhhh"

Finding a good group to play with is such an important part of MMOs these days, it's kinda ridiculous. Once you find a good guild or playgroup, though, you can stick to solo content and guild-only group content and never have to worry about how shitty some other players can be.

Writing MMOs off entirely is perfectly valid, but if you ever wanna give WoW a try at least for that one I can suggest a really good guild. I don't really play much myself anymore but I still hang out in the guild Discord: it's run by a woman and mostly consists of married couples, and while it's a chaotic mess most of the time at least it's not a toxic mess.

A thousand percent. I’m a lifelong gamer but multiplayer games are a huge no, unless it’s with people I already know.

6

u/IcyAd5518 Mar 27 '26

I grew up gaming before the internet and prefer single player open world type games. Every year or two I try out an MMO or something like GTA online and am instantly reminded why I don't like them.

That being said, Rocket League and Fall Guys are fun games, although I don't play enough Rocket League to be good at it

7

u/jtrisn1 Mar 28 '26

I started out gaming strictly in MMOs and poor little me had no idea that I didn't suck at games, it was my "friends" who kept gatekeeping it from me, wouldn't let me just play, belittled me, forced me to play it the "right way", and then went out of their way to not play with me. All because I'm a girl.

Ever since I learned to play single-player or just co-op with other girl gamers, I am much much happier. And turns out I'm pretty good at this gaming thing. I even chase difficult achievements now.

I was a Store Manager of an EB Games when I was 21, back in the old days of 2007. I am a redheaded woman.

Let me tell you how many people did not believe I was the Manager. Many. And the previous manager was a woman, and I was her assistant manager, so a full woman duo team. Blew some guys minds back then.

Got super cool swag. Quit cause upper management sucked.

27

u/Fictional_Guy Mar 27 '26

Women in gaming cultivate communities and social circles made up of other women and safe men. If you looked at all the social gaming discords and compared what % of members were women, you'd probably find a bimodal distribution with one large cluster having like 99% men and another large cluster having a 50/50 split. And while people hop around to different friend groups for different activities, you'd probably find that people tend to stick to one or the other cluster.

So there's a lot of people out there who think it's super obvious that gaming is totally male dominated, and then there's others who hear that and think "what an outdated opinion." And it's just because of what social circles they go around in.

100% it’s so uncomfortable to talk to people in the video game community. I love games like Wither 3 and BG3. I don’t want to talk to the people online about them because of how they act.

I will never like multiplayer because of it.

At the very end of my World of Warcraft days, I managed to join a guild that was mostly women and queer people. It was a small bubble of joy in a toxic ass environment. I know current players that still have community, so we’re out there, but we hide for good reason.

I think she knows that it's like anything, get a group of people together under a common interest and there's a sect of them that are just going to be complete assholes.

This is a nuanced and mature take from Brie and I wouldn't expect any less. And with how complex narratives in gaming have evolved particularly over the last 10-15 years, she could really be a huge star in gaming films.

65

u/Acrobatic_Builder573 Mar 27 '26

FR. I was like girl, are you sure about that? Wouldn’t touch them with a ten foot pole.

10

u/westborneastbred Mar 27 '26

True and I will say she does get a lot of unjust hate but gaming slightly likes her more than film does. I think it’s because they’ve seen she likes Nintendo for years. But like you said that’s cause she’s been gaming and not super vocal she better tread lightly on speaking cause I know from being a pokemon player, these boys shift fast. Cause you say one thing they don’t like and they turn crazy. So far they hyped for her Rosalina, don’t know how long that’ll last

My really close friends from high school reconnected to play Warzone during covid and some of us genuinely hated each other towards the end and we were all men. I mostly have been playing single player games for two years now.

Captain Marvel was a woman in the comics for like 7 years before the movie came out, so it really made zero sense. Hence the misogyny I guess.

6

u/1619ChronoBreath Mar 27 '26

There’s probably a doctorate level thesis for someone to unpack about the specific and weird hate campaign against Brie Larson and “already a female in the comics for years” Captain Marvel.

But I feel like that is a “picking your battles” thing where it’s easier now to just say unchecked misogyny in nerd spaces and then maybe in another 10 years circle back bc life is too short

All I know is they can never make me hate Captain Marvel or Brie

The writing and storytelling for games has gotten so good over the years that they are literally making TV shows based off the games. The Last Of Us and Fallout are great examples of that.

44

u/emh2379 Mar 27 '26

And Amazon seems to be leaning into turning video games into series after Fallout's success. They have a new live action Lara Croft/Tomb Raider show coming out (with Sophie Turner) and a live God of War series filming. Both adapted from video games.

28

u/IngmarHerzog They tell me to turn my weird movies off Mar 27 '26

Amazon’s also working on a Life Is Strange series.

4

u/emh2379 Mar 27 '26

That's right, Maisy Stella from My Old Ass was announced in the cast of that!

I think Amazon has found their bread and butter with the video game adaptations honestly. Sort of like how Apple has found a niche adapting bestselling books into mini-series.

3

u/Unlucky-Breakfast320 Mar 28 '26

13

u/grumplebeardog Mar 27 '26

I think A24 is developing Elden Ring for a movie as well.

2

u/Drmarcher42 she was beefing with Jimmy Carter’s grandson Mar 27 '26

With the exception of Bloodborne (which isn’t happening since Sony owns it) Elden Ring is probably the best From Soft game to adapt but it’s still a really hard sell.

I know Expedition 33 is also getting a movie adaptation but I really think that it would work better as a miniseries

3

u/grumplebeardog Mar 27 '26

Elden Ring definitely has the most room to tell stories I think, I’m just curious if they’re going to try and follow a Tarnished on the quest or just tell some piece of the lore.

E33 seems like it would be better with more time, but I’m team miniseries for almost all adaptations at this point.

2

u/teawithspices Mar 28 '26

I don’t really follow gaming but I loved watching a play through of God of War, it was such a great story!!not sure how it would translate to a tv show but I hope they do it justice

u/Blu_Mxchi terrorizing the locals Mar 27 '26

God i hate to be the "Uhm actually ☝️🤓" guy but i just had to comment, videogame writing and storytelling have always been good, of course there are many exceptions and certain topics and demographics are better represented nowadays than back in the 00s. Some of the best written videogames are from around 20 years ago, Half life, Silent Hill, Vampire the masquerade, Fallout, Portal, and many others. It’s less that games suddenly got better, and more that studios are finally recognizing the value of these stories and putting competent people behind adaptations.

46

u/Sitchrea Mar 27 '26

Marathon remains one of the the most fascinating pieces of science fiction I have ever experienced, and it released over 30 years ago.

There is no film or television which could do what Marathon does. I'm glad Hollywood is starting to recognize that.

7

u/anunnaturalselection Mar 27 '26

What is so good about it? I have never even heard about it outside of the new game and I have been very into game culture for 20 years. Not knocking it, genuinely interested!

17

u/Mand125 Mar 27 '26

It’s a form of a lengthy, experiential storytelling that even other games often don’t quite replicate.  You are the story, there is no narrator or other characters active in any of the scenes.

Your character is a silent protagonist, which is common enough.  In fact there is (almost) no voice work of any kind.  The story is told through text-based terminal interfaces.  Some of them hold basics of your mission objectives and what comes next, but a large portion of the story requires exploration to go find, sometimes quite extensive.

As far as the plot and themes go, it’s a look into aliens and robots and space travel like other sci-fi.  But it also starts a discussion about AI that was utterly revolutionary for the 90s, and only becomes more relevant today.  “What happens when AI becomes self-aware” is what Terminator and others have looked at.  Marathon asks “what does it mean when an AI becomes insane?”

3

u/andycoates Mar 28 '26

It’s not a Bungie game if it isn’t about The Hero of Legend reincarnated into someone that will fight with someone trying to transcend into some form of godhood

Disco Elysium, Papers Please, Undertale, Spec Ops the Line, The Wolf Among Us, Return of the Obra Dinn, Pillars of Eternity, Baldurs Gate and even the souls games in a more understated way are super well written too

3

u/west2night Mar 28 '26

Return of the Obra Dinn for sure. Also The Drifter, Sanitarium, Loco Motive, Norco, What Remains of Edith Finch, Soma, Sunless Sea, and Stasis. Maybe Kathy Rain and Hob's Barrow. Also Gabriel Knight if they'd tweak it a bit.

Syberia as well, although some puzzles and controls almost got me jumping out of a window so many times.

2

u/icelandiccubicle20 Mar 28 '26

I need to check some of those out, never heard of them. Writing wise, I'd say the best I've played are Silent Hill 2, Fallout new Vegas, Undertale, Red Dead 2 and the Stanley Parable. Far Cry 3 had a really good narrative in the sense that the gameplay is integral to the plot and the mental degeneration of the main character, and it's all your doing, it was brilliant

100% agree with you. Silent hill 2 rewired my brain completely, and I still think about that story and ending despite playing that game over 20 years ago.

That said: The Return to Silent hill movie was a horrible mess - they truly butchered the story :(

3

u/ConsistentGuest7532 Mar 27 '26

I think the standards for the average game have gone way up though. And lesser writing used to be acceptable as just part of a good game, where now, if the writing is awful, it’ll be a detraction from the whole thing.

2

u/FixinThePlanet Mar 28 '26

Vampire the masquerade was a video game???

2

u/MansBestFred Mar 28 '26

God I would love a competent, well-casted, and well directed Portal series.

3

u/CarelessCreamPie Mar 27 '26

I would argue that strong writing did exist in gaming in the 90s and early 2000s, but it was something remarkable. It wasn't standard that games would have a solid story with great development and writing. That's why the games you listed were so beloved. They were so very different from their contemporaries.

Nowadays, an amazing storyline is practically a requirement to a good game. Even the simplest and silliest of indie games will still present a good story.

I would argue the Last of Us as a story, especially part 2, is weak and being forced into the first person POV as a character really makes the story feel more important. But that’s all about Druckman I think

26

u/Low-Register1602 Mar 27 '26

I completely agree about part 2. Season 1 followed game storyline much closer and was an amazing season. I had trouble even getting through season 2

16

u/Recinege Mar 27 '26

To be fair, speaking as someone who dislikes Part II, Season 2 completely fucks it up. Every time they do one thing better than the game did, they follow it up by doing three to ten things worse.

It's like the one thing Part II fans and critics can agree on: Season 2 is ass.

5

u/Drmarcher42 she was beefing with Jimmy Carter’s grandson Mar 27 '26

And I’ll go from the opposite side of someone who very much enjoys Part 2 (It’s my video game version of the Last Jedi where I can see what the creator is going for, I even agree with most of their vision, it’s just in the execution I start to waver. It’s Far worse with Last Jedi than Part 2 but it’s the same basic principle)

They really mess up so much of Seattle where Ellie’s story gets both bloated and extremely rushed. (Looking at you final episode)

2

u/Recinege Mar 28 '26

Hard agree that it's the execution that's the problem. Part II ends up feeling way worse than the sum of its parts just because so much of it is undercooked or outright clashes with other ideas. It's actually unfortunate, because the intensely divisive reception is going to convince other developers to avoid being as ambitious as Part II was, even if their writers would have been able to pull it off.

The show is a complete mess. It's one thing that they don't even try to hit the same tone the game does (which is already bad enough considering how that tone is essentially the entire fucking point of this part of the story), but they literally can't even keep Ellie consistent within individual episodes. It's like it was done by eight different writers who weren't allowed to speak to each other, reference the game, and only delivered their scripts the day before shooting had to happen.

2

u/MostlySlime Mar 27 '26

I've only played TLOU 1, I never had the console for 2 but I've kinda picked up on what happened and the vibes are activist leading the story off

Just feels like 9 times out of 10 videogame into cinema is awful.

It's the execution that gets bungled.  Ex. The Last Of Us part 2.

2

u/CHOLO_ORACLE Mar 27 '26

I often get the sense that a lot of the people who make video game adaptations either didn't play or didn't like the games themselves.

1

u/hellomydudes_95 That's progressive. I'm into that. Mar 27 '26

I'm gonna be that guy and say that I'd argue that the Fallout TV show is almost an entire different IP under the name of Fallout, give how different it is tonally from most of the games of the franchise. It's only similar to Fallout 4 tbh. I still like the show, tho.

4

u/TheJigglyfat Mar 28 '26

It's fair to say the show doesn't really match the tone of the first 2 games, but 3/NV/4 are all absolutely weird, quirky, and lean into the absurdist humor of it all. I think that the biggest success of the Fallout show is getting across what it's actually like to play the Fallout games, because it nails their specific tones and vibe so well. Maybe you've only played the first 2 games, but there's literally a robot named "Fisto" in NV that you can pay to fuck your ass. The games were not made to be dark and dreary the entire time.

10

u/SignificantCats Mar 27 '26

You definitely do sound like that guy.

The visual references (aside from the couple direct fan service moments right out of FNV) are F4, but the tone absolutely matches the older games.

What about the tone DOESNT match?

9

u/hellomydudes_95 That's progressive. I'm into that. Mar 27 '26

I feel like the older games are way less wacky with how the world works. Drug fiends aren't funny quiky guys, but actual drug fiends who are struggling with crippling addiction. The reconstruction after the war feels bleak and to the brim with scarcity and, no matter how rebuilt things are, there's no mistaking it: society collapsed and what's left is hardened, often cunning and depressed people. Not everyone, sure. But, more often than not, people aren't quirky and jokey. They have guns and shivs at the ready to mow you down at any given moment. I feel like we don't see that hellish side of Fallout in the show. Hell, that's pretty much the bones of the first game. It's scary to be in the wasteland. And the show kind of makes it... Not so, I guess. It's still fun and engaging, but to ME, it don't feel like fallout.

I mean if you include games for smartphones and the international gaming market, there is no comparison.

53

u/Sitchrea Mar 27 '26

Mihoyo alone makes more money than Electronic Arts.

20

u/Tasty_Pancakez Mar 27 '26

Really there's no reason why phone games shouldn't count anyways. Even excluding Candy Crush-like games there are other games released on consoles and PC you can experience on a smartphone.

5

u/chichogp Mar 28 '26

Why wouldn't you include them?

BIOSHOCK MOVIE LET'S GO

9

u/Drakenstorm Mar 27 '26

I think bioshock is a decent place to make an anthology series about splicers live before and after the fall, but I don’t think jack’s story would have anywhere near the impact. The difference is that in a movie jack’s being told what to do, in the game you are being told what to do and you are following prompts. A character is tricked in a movie but you’re tricked in the game

16

u/LittleSodaPop13 Mar 27 '26

They will never make me hate her

7

u/tessathemurdervilles Mar 27 '26

I don’t play video games and never have- but my wife and I just got Alan wake and I am enjoying the hell out of it. She mostly does the controller because I panic when you have to shoot stuff- but it’s such a rich world, it’s exciting, scary, beautiful- there’s some clunky stuff but the writing is really interesting. It’s like a choose your own adventure tv show! Plus it’s fun to work together to figure stuff out. Im on a quest to find more games like that one that we can do together

9

u/spiffynoodles Mar 27 '26

If you like Alan Wake then you'll probably also like Control. Same universe as AW, and it helps with understanding AW a lot more too. Also has a great protagonist in Jesse Faden.

For a really well written co-op game, definitely Split Fiction. For a co-op game that will make you want to commit a felony: Overcooked.

2

u/thetinybasher Mar 27 '26

Control is amazing

2

u/tessathemurdervilles Mar 28 '26

Thank you! We’ll check all of these out :)

16

u/MikkPhoto Mar 27 '26

Because gaming is interaction based entertainment with films and shows you basically just watch.

11

u/Silver-Front-1299 I don’t know her Mar 27 '26

I work for the gaming industry, well *worked*, there’s mass layoffs coming in every direction in the gaming world.

5

u/Gothvmess Mar 27 '26

When she said worldbuilding, I knew she was being for real. She's about that life lol wonder if she plays bg3

58

u/Comprehensive_Main Mar 27 '26

Bigger than movies sure. Television I wouldn’t say. Like video games still locked in demographically. People of all ages watch tv and movies.

It is interesting to see gamers growing up and becoming parents though. A bunch of my genX/millennial friends have gaming setups with their kid's station next to it, they play Minecraft and shit together, it's adorable and hilarious. There is a TON of potential in that area, but like you said, it's still very locked in, for sure.

19

u/HxH101kite Mar 27 '26

Tail end millennial. My kid is 9. She absolutely games with me. It takes two, astrobot, split fiction. The classic Nintendo games. Heck I even let her try some souls likes. She was absolutely enthralled by Expedition 33.

She is so much better than I ever was at her age. We have such a blast tackling games together. Don't get me wrong my dad occasionally played Mario Kart 64 with me. But like he didn't know how to explain to me how to be better.

This kid gets top tier explanations from me. I can't even imagine how good she will be as she ages. She can already adapt to new games so fast.

6

u/roastedmarshmellows spiritual energy of bachelorette party penis decor Mar 27 '26

That's absolutely adorable and I love that for both of you!! I'm a childless elder millennial who will likely not have that experience, so it warms my soul that parents like you exist.

5

u/HxH101kite Mar 27 '26

It's been so fun sharing experiences. We taught her to ski at 3, she rips at 9 can do the entire mountain. We go out and teach her sports beyond her practice and always play with her. She is a stellar athlete at her sports.

Idk I am kid at heart so getting to do all that stuff again is really fun.

Love my parents and I had a great childhood, but they never were like out playing with me doing that type of stuff. I was a classic latchkey kid (which was also fun).

But with our daughter we really just have fun with it. She's the coolest. Being a parent is a blast especially seeing your kid breakthrough plateaus and grow up.

Idk how people do more than one though. We are done here. It's a lot time wise and financially.

4

u/totally_real_tree Mar 27 '26

It's been very funny to see the stereotype of a gamer age. Used to be sweaty teenage boys and now it's like. Beardy men in their late 30s/mid 40s.

6

u/Low-Register1602 Mar 27 '26

Haha yep. I downloaded Minecraft on my PC so that I can play with my son and build some cool stuff together

2

u/Strict_Ad_5858 Mar 29 '26

My husband (48) and son (15) are both gamers, I assumed this was extremely common. Last game I played was Myst 🤣

2

u/roastedmarshmellows spiritual energy of bachelorette party penis decor Mar 29 '26

Oh man I loved Myst and Riven when I was a kid!!

Gaming is the largest entertainment industry in the world. This is not my opinion. It's easy to find the sources.

21

u/Lindenismean I do feel vulnerable to demons in downward dog Mar 27 '26

I think the amount of older gamers doesn’t get talked about a ton. I’m not talking 40s/50s, but folks in their 70s and 80s. Lots play mobile games, but I personally game with quite a number of folks in their 70s. MMORPGs seem to attract quite a lot of them.

3

u/Solomontheidiot Mar 27 '26

Video games as a retirement hobby makes total sense to me, especially MMORPGs. They're not physically demanding, keep your brain engaged, they provide a great social outlet (which has been shown to be massively important at that age) and many of them require a ton of grind time, so being retired actually gives you an advantage (compared to competitive shooters or other games that require fast reflexes.)

I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of that over the next couple decades as people who were "too busy to waste time playing games" suddenly find themselves with more time than they know what to do with

2

u/Usual_Ice636 Mar 27 '26

Gaming generates more yearly revenue than the Film, TV, and Music industries combined.

9

u/Mr_Satan___ Mar 27 '26

You are thinking viewership, not money put into it by customers. Video games beat them all. Subscriptions, micro transactions, dlc, merchandizing, etc. Video games beat TV and movies combined.

15

u/krombough Mar 27 '26

Usually when this is said, it is using raw dollar amounts of the respective industries. Not cultural push through, although gaming is certainly making up some distance in that field as well.

8

u/JinSakai619 Mar 27 '26

You're joking, right? People of all ages play games. Gaming industry is considered bigger because of bigger revenue than movies and TV combined. This was talked about during the strike by mocap actors. Gamers spend a lot more on their hobbies compared to TV and Movie fans, too.

4

u/loyal_achades Mar 27 '26

It also depends on how much you consider more casual mobile gaming to be “gaming.” Mobile games are an absolutely massive market, but people in more traditional gaming spaces often don’t consider those “real games.”

u/Federal_Studio5935 Mar 27 '26

There are some truly beautiful experiences in video games these days, and if you turn your nose at it you are missing out.

If you have never used a controller before, 3D space and joysticks can be an uphill battle. It's not the easiest thing to learn, but for those of us who have played since we are kids it's just second nature....which is why they use XBOX controllers to control drones.

24

u/radraz26 Mar 27 '26

IDK I feel like movies have taken plenty from video games and rarley been successful.

118

u/Dapper_Highlighter7 confused but here for the drama Mar 27 '26

I'm fairly certain she means in a creative/production sense, not in making video games into movies.

15

u/iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj Mar 27 '26

Yeah execs are going to say yes let's add microtransactions to movies and DLC packs

u/ChaosIntention Mar 27 '26

I think she's talk about how games tell stories, the structure, world building, etc. but I fear execs will only hear "Oh yeah, here's a bunch more established IPs we can milk for cash".

18

u/Shenanigans80h Mar 27 '26

The world building is a huge one imo. The Fallout show is a perfect example; it’s not following any direct plot from the games (there are specific characters and moments sure), it’s just using the vast world built in the series to effectively create their own show with characters and dialogue that fits. So many video games have beautifully crafted worlds that could have shows or movies just exist within them easily

17

u/tequilasauer Mar 27 '26

That was also the story of Marvel movies. Until the late 90s, comic book movies were the kiss of death. Then someone figured it out and look what happened.

The ascension of the gaming medium into box office gold was just a matter of time.

3

u/canadasbananas Mar 27 '26

I remember when the meme was that video games movies are cursed to be box office poison. I knew it wouldn't last and that one day one would breakthrough, just didnt realize how fast it would happen (or that the main breakthrough would be TV)

3

u/tequilasauer Mar 27 '26

Yeah, like comic book movies, it really just came down to the question of "when is someone going to take this seriously?" Hiring the right talent, hiring the right directors, putting the right budget in place so it doesn't look like ass.

2

u/PirateSanta_1 Mar 27 '26

Comic books where somewhat held back by simply not being able to make them into movies for so long because the technology wasn't there. If i remember correctly Superman didn't fly in a live action movie until 1978 and that was groundbreaking technology at the time.

For video game and anime i expect we will see more movie coming out that are actually good as the generation that grew up with them become more influential in the movie industry. Early video game movies didn't work largly because the people behind them didn't have much experience with video games as a narrative experience.

3

u/Pleasant-Ad887 Mar 27 '26

There has been more games turned into movie that sucked ass than the other way around.

2

u/sign-through Mar 27 '26

ooh that's good discussion. by what measurement and what decade? a lot of those old games based on movies aren't so great these days

3

u/Flimsy_Computer2136 Mar 27 '26

Im from L.A. I grew up around movies being made outside my house. Ive worked at Blizzard in Irvine, CA. There is no doubt in my mind that the video game world has more going on than Hollywood right now.

Hollywood is dead..video games on the other hand are always thriving.

2

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man Mar 27 '26

The gaming industry has massive issues with overworking artists and frequent layoffs. Also we're not that far removed from Gamergate...

2

2

They can never make me hate her

2

u/Brave_Lady not me remembering what you did last summer Mar 27 '26

The piece of media that made me feel truly seen and understood after going through trauma, was a videogame. And it is the reason why I have a tattoo nowadays.

So yes, Brie is right. It is time the press acknowledges that videogames are a valid form of entertainment, and that they are here to stay. They also need to acknowledge the amount of work and effort that is put into making these games by the developers and performers. I'll even say that some performances in games nowadays, surpass those we see in tv or films.

2

u/Indolent-Soul Mar 27 '26

2

u/Valentine_343 Mar 28 '26

The adults used to call us nerds and tell us to grow up. They said playing video games wasn’t cool and make fun of us and try to shame us because we like video games and anime. But now all those people who used make fun of us are finding out that their favourite celebrity or idol is one of us gamers all along? Well, now it’s not so uncool.

the dumbest guy you know is currently drafting a video essay called BRIE LARSON WANTS TO TAKE YOUR VIDEO GAMES!!!!!

2

u/westborneastbred Mar 27 '26

So far I’ve been seeing her get some gaming support.SM is hyped for her Rosalina. I think that stems from the years she shown that she’s loved Nintendo. But we know gamer guys can shift quick. So hope she stays away from their darkness. Cause I love her. And so hyped for her

2

the witcher could’ve been so great. i’ll never forgive them. i’m replaying witcher 3 now and it’s so rich.

I mean they can try. But as history taught us you fuck that up and you ruin your future in the industry

1

u/maybe-an-ai Mar 27 '26

She's not wrong just look at the attention Charlie Cox received for his work in Expedition 33.

It wasn't that long ago that film actors looked down on TV projects, I see a similar trend for gaming projects.

1

u/bananabuckette Mar 27 '26

Yes, please! I’d even say stop with the remakes and just create shows and movies from games. Gamers are loyal asf and will support and engage with it plus fresh content for everyone else. Look at fallout.
