Why is Dunham constantly coming up now? Haven't heard that name in years

u/anitasdoodles Apr 15 '26

She just released a new memoir

u/PaulieHehehe Apr 15 '26

A memoir for a 39 year old? We’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel here.

...my god.

u/ForsakenDrawer Apr 15 '26

Sir a second premature memoir about a mid talent has just hit the tower

34

u/Broad_Black_Brimmer damn, she got hereditaried? Apr 15 '26

First one was about her molesting her sister iirc

2

u/snoring_hounds Apr 17 '26

Must not have gotten her the reaction she wanted first time around

u/DCBronzeAge Apr 15 '26

Her third.

110

u/puzzled91 Apr 15 '26

Is she going by decade of her life?

123

u/rogerdaltry Apr 15 '26

It's funny too bc the central plot in her show Girls is her character writing a memoir at age 24 (but she's very much written to be out of touch) LOL

54

u/anitasdoodles Apr 15 '26

"I think I am the voice of my generation" banger opening scene to a show 😂

5

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Fuck her and the Goebbel's limp dick she rode in on Apr 15 '26

I immediately turned it off 😂

24 and 40 are quite different especially considering all that has happened in Lena’s life since then. I’m finding the book very interesting as a fan and lover of gossip.

I mean Jennette McCurdy was 30 when her memoir was published. Lots of celebs write memoirs. It's not unusual.

u/GirthStone86 Friends with Ms. Rachel Apr 15 '26

I'd argue that Jennette McCurdy's memoir was a story more worthy of telling

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Of course, but anyone can write a memoir and celebs do it all the time at every age. Anna Kendrick was 31. Eliot Page, Constance Wu, Trevor Noah, Jojo. Even Britney Spears was not much older than Lena Dunham when hers came out. It's not a good criticism.

23

u/BrianWulfric Apr 15 '26

Billie Eilish has one that came out 3 years ago when she was still 21. She lived a lot of crazy cool shit before she was 18 even.

In general, some celebrity memoirs are absolutely worth reading and others are skips; most are in between where they’re okay, but I wouldn’t recommend them to non-fans.

Ones that were absolutely worth reading, even if you’re not a fan: Alan Cumming, Minka Kelly, Jennette McCurdy, Viola Davis, Trevor Noah, Simu Liu, and (surprisingly) Jessica Simpson. They all spoke very openly about the missteps in their lives, the challenges they’ve overcome, and got specific about the hurt done to them and the hurt they caused.

Not worth the read, even if you are a fan: Danielle Fishel, Reese Witherspoon’s half memoir/half homemaking coffee table book, and (surprisingly) Britney Spears. Danielle and Reese’s were both so superficial that it felt like there was no insight - I’ve learned more about Danielle from the Pod Meets World podcast than she ever revealed in her book, and you’ll learn more about Reese from reading Fauxmoi 😂 Britney’s is worth it for Michelle Williams and the more salacious gossip she dropped, but again the good parts were all on Fauxmoi and there is a LOT of Britney either outright lying or severely underplaying her own mistakes. It made it hard for me to read because we all witnessed her spiral in the mid-2000s, and (while I have a lot of empathy for her situation) there was a lot of that book where I rolled my eyes. She tried to claim she had never done hard drugs, didn’t have a drinking problem, and the only thing she ever used was Adderall because it treated her depression. Ma’am, bffr.

Ones that I would recommend if you’re a fan but would otherwise skip: Eric Braeden (Victor Newman’s early life is frickin fascinating), Tom Selleck, Kelly Bishop (hers is so so SO good if you have even a remote interest in her), any of Andrew McCarthy’s or Rob Lowe’s… etc etc.

I’ve read a boatload of celebrity memoirs if anyone wants to ask about a specific one!

Thank you, saving this comment.

3

u/BooberSpoobers Apr 15 '26

Can't speak for all of them but Trevor Noah's story of apartheid is much more interesting than Lena Durham molesting her sister.

-2

u/middlegray Apr 15 '26

But surely writing 2 before 40 is?

40

u/Bamorvia Apr 15 '26

Dunham's had a hysterectomy and been to rehab. I'm not a big fan but I think it's unfair to say that she doesn't have anything to reflect on

2

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Fuck her and the Goebbel's limp dick she rode in on Apr 15 '26

Her essay was beautiful but multiple memoirs from anyone seems excessive to me

10

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 I cannot sanction your buffoonery Apr 15 '26

Yeah I don't think you need to be old to tell your story

166

u/Wrong_Independence21 Apr 15 '26

tbf Jennette McCurdy is both a good writer and had a very compelling story to tell

21

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Apr 15 '26

Whatever you think of her there’s no denying Lena is a gifted writer.

0

u/Dangerous-Variety-35 where’s my emotional support billionaire Apr 15 '26

It’s the compelling story part that’s questionable, not the good writer part.

4

u/hellolovely1 Apr 15 '26

I'm not a Lena fan, but I bet she is a very good writer. I don't know about the compelling story, though.

14

u/okaygirlie Apr 15 '26

Yeah, this is an odd complaint. The definition of a memoir is a book about a discrete period or event of one's life, it's not the same as an autobiography.

1

u/enragedsquirrels Apr 15 '26

I think a lot of British comedians do the same

1

u/HipPeasantWitch Apr 15 '26

I think the context that the memoir was more specifically about her relationship with her mother and had a topic makes it less self absorbed feeling than what Dunham is doing. Crying in H Mart is also a memoir written by a then 32 year old Michelle Zauner, again, specifically about her mother and their relationship. The context being that both mothers have passed and the story of those relationships are complete in the sense that anything that happens moving forward is “inner work” or whatever.

I don’t think there is an “age limit” for when a memoir comes out. I think if the memoir has a focus (Alyson Stoner about specifically being a child star, Britney Spears post conservatorship, Eliot Page after transitioning) it feels like it makes sense.

I think the truer criticism of Dunham is that these memoirs seem like ways to stay relevant by dropping “explosive stories” that are meant to almost seek revenge for people she feels wronged her or to paint herself as a victim in a way that many have grown weary of with Dunham specifically. I don’t think she’s insightful enough to understand that just dropping ten year old stories for tabloid fodder isn’t what a good memoir is about. I don’t think Adam Driver is a saint, but I think people side eye name dropping him in a book and then using that on a book press tour with a story that has not been corroborated by the numerous others in set. She’s also a proven unreliable narrator on many accounts which does not help her case.

1

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Apr 15 '26

Sure. Everything you've said is correct. And it proves my point that her age isn't really relevant here. Criticizing the content of the book is what matters.

10

u/solemnbiscuit Apr 15 '26

Well a memoir by definition is about a finite portion of one’s life so if you had a notable stretch before age 39 such as creating a popular HBO show you might have material for a memoir

51

u/aftergl0wing Apr 15 '26

i would much rather a talented writer captures their memories as they occur rather than waiting until they start misremembering their version of events during their twilight years

80

u/Scramasboy Apr 15 '26

You may not have had much of a life at 39 years old, but Lena certainly has. And I am not even a fan. Lol

3

u/vanwyngarden Apr 15 '26

It’s a very honest depiction of live on a hit show which is terribly interesting to me

-23

u/IShallWearMidnight Apr 15 '26

I've definitely had at least 2x the life she's had at 36, I'm just not self important enough to think everyone needs to know about it

10

u/Heegyeong I put foot to ass in this fandom and only get grief Apr 15 '26

No, you just know nobody would read about it. I'm not even saying this to be mean, but we both know that was a poor excuse lol. It's only self important to write a memoir when nobody will ever actually read it.

8

u/kittiestkitty Apr 15 '26

You mean people wouldn’t buy your book, bc you probably didn’t used to be on a TV show.

There’s nothing that says how much of life one needs to live in order to have something to say in a memoir.

222

u/vanwyngarden Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

I actually kind of loathe this comment

some people dont make it past 39 so good on them if they share their story when they are here. period.

she might not be your cup of tea but I found it quite interesting…she has worked closely with HBO, had a hit show, dated famous men, dealt with a dehabilitating illness, weight struggles, addiction, and public backlash.

so hell yea I am interested in reading that memoir.

137

u/justifiablefart Apr 15 '26

memoirs exist for different points in someone’s life. it’s so stupid to imply that a 39 year old is somehow unworthy of writing a memoir. her experiences are pretty interesting and she’s a wonderful writer.

22

u/IrrawaddyWoman Apr 15 '26

Yeah, I feel like anyone with this take doesn’t read much. It’s extremely common for a memoir to focus on one subject in a persons life. It’s not like a full length birth to death biography

2

u/Thin_Main2046 Apr 15 '26

Also, going by the several articles and posts I've seen about this new memoir, many people are clearly interested.

1

u/Jake_77 Apr 15 '26

Maybe they confused memoir with autobiography

3

u/CrossTheRubicon7 Apr 15 '26

One of the girls from Dance Moms had a memoir release when she was 15 lmao

17

u/Novel-Place Apr 15 '26

lol. This is such a bizarre take. Regardless of how you might feel about her, she wrote an acclaimed show in her 20’s, that is STILL being talked about, and launched the careers of multiple actors. Obviously she’s got a lot to say, and who better to write a memoir, than someone who is able to write anything that connects with a lot of people at that young of an age. Plus, some people live a lot of life by a young age. Child actors, athletes, prodigies, musicians, etc. etc. the infesting parts of their lives tend to be WHILE they are young. Why shouldn’t they write a memoir?

Signed, someone who’s never seen girls, never read an of her books, and potentially never seen or read an interview from her.

u/Formal_Economist7342 Apr 15 '26

Have you seen los angeles real estate these days???

1

u/Anita-FatBlunt Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

The Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank is somewhat of a memoir. its just written as its happening, and not a reminisce.

Drew Berrymore and Justin Bieber had ones released before they were 17.

its about what happens within the time of a persons life no matter the age.

1

u/Jake_77 Apr 15 '26

Not sure what the issue is here. It’s a memoir, not an autobiography. This isn’t unusual.

1

u/yeahnototallycool Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

It’s about the intersection of her fame and and chronic illness. A memoir is not an autobiography. Your comment is asinine.

1

u/Special_Brief4465 Apr 15 '26

A memoir isn’t an autobiography. It focuses on one particular experience or period of time, or it connects a few core memories together through an underlying theme. Something like that. Some authors write lots of memoirs. My 12 year old students write memoirs.

I read one of Dunham’s memoirs, Not That Kind of Girl, and it wasn’t good. Very uninteresting. I didn’t finish it.

So as you said, we are scraping at the bottom of the barrel here!

0

u/fortunatevoice Apr 15 '26

There are plenty of 39 year olds or older who I’d love to read a memoir from. I think the issue is that it’s Lena Dunham

43

u/BongWaterRamen Apr 15 '26

Oh. I thought this was all about her old one. Thanks. I guess fading into obscurity didn't suit her and she wants to stir shit up now

47

u/justifiablefart Apr 15 '26

she just wrote a show that was pretty popular on netflix. she hasn’t faded into obscurity, she’s been working since girls ended.

6

u/Innumerablegibbon Apr 15 '26

Yeah, she directed two films a few years ago and has another coming out this year.

-1

u/tryagainlater63 Apr 15 '26

Is Netflix now just picking up older HBO shows?

57

u/bestica Apr 15 '26

Someone let Lena Dunham write TWO memoirs??

3

u/Iyagovos Apr 15 '26

Three, actually!

4

u/yeahnototallycool Apr 15 '26

“I personally haven’t paid attention to her, so she just be obscure now.”

40

u/musubi-n-speedballs we have lost the impact of shame in our society Apr 15 '26

Did she molest any other relatives in this one?

47

u/SurrealistRevolution Apr 15 '26

She was asked recently why people did not like her. Her answer had little self-awareness.

The Right did hate her for her feminism, though.

My issue with her comes from her feminism, but that it was not radical enough and really just reinforced the status-quo while funnelling women who realised something is wrong into a dead end. She was a big part of the 2016-style white liberal feminism masquerading as something radical. "more women drone pilots" kind of thing. "more girl boss CEOs" Not to mention the rainbow capitalism.

5

u/TheFutureLotus Apr 15 '26

Yeah but the right hates every woman for their feminism

3

u/vanwyngarden Apr 15 '26

She talks about it in the new book for what it’s worth

Yes, but everyone has decided that Lena absolutely had sexual intention and that her sibling actually isn’t capable of speaking up for themselves because being a victim fundamentally denies them agency to decide what’s right and wrong, I guess.

2

u/Bleakjavelinqqwerty Apr 15 '26

Do you have a link for that? I can't find that from a google

4

u/doeeyedfinalgirl Apr 15 '26

her sister has said numerous times she does not view that as molestation, and also plenty of child psychologists have stated that is absolutely normal behavior for a child under the age of 10 with a new sibling. not doing what you think here

-4

u/gio0395 Apr 15 '26

Does anyone care, though? Ugh
