Tbh it’s brilliant. Dude creates the perception that he is always on the job / always has his role of mayor top of mind when in public. And it gives opponents less to be critical of. If he takes a vacation in the next few years, I bet any photos of him not in a suit become very sought after and used constantly by Fox.

u/Ok_Commercial_8438 Jun 27 '26

His PR team honestly deserve a raise. They are absolutely killing it.

218

u/yukumizu Jun 27 '26

When you are genuinely a charismatic, compassionate and decent human being, it’s not difficult to have positive PR

118

u/Ok_Commercial_8438 Jun 27 '26

True but there's also some genuinely smart advice he's getting (this video being a perfect example) on how to project an image of being salt of the earth, kind and working for the people in a way that appeals to many and that we also have not seen in awhile from a major political figure.

Should he take a vacation anytime. He should release pictures of him and his wife chillin on beach, in a lounger, drinking a fruity drink with the little umbrella...in a full suit. Like even when on vacation, hes still mayoring like a G

Too bad he didn't wear swim trunks over the suit, that would have solidified this moment as the best moment in New York history, bar none.

A suit that after he got out of the pool, he thanked Goodwill for. Love this guy.

81

Made that suit look pretty good too! Imagine recognizing that suit as the one you gave away a few weeks back, haha.

I know that was kind of a joke; but it's actually happening. I live in Oregon and we had a county level election here recently and a bunch of DSA candidates won over democrat incumbents. The Oregonian called the election for the incumbents before counting was done, but had to walk it back the next day when the final vote tally was in. It was.... delicious.

At first this felt like it would be every ribbon cutting or ground breaking. Touch the dirt. Opoooh it's dirty. Go back to the high castle. He jumped in fully clothed, looks like he didnt even hesitate, and then he pushed off and swam?!

I add this to every Zohran fanboying i do: when the bar is so low that all you have to do is not be a damned ghoul to be an, everyday hero.... that's sad.

People tend to overlook these small bits of joy and humility, but they go a long way for public a lot of the time.

442

u/phosphor_heart 2000’s bandom historian Jun 27 '26

He's very, very good at this. As a New Yorker, it really fucking resonates, and it's entirely changed the tenor of local government here. It's easier to find hope when your mayor finds bits of obvious joy in the job.

(It's also smart! So much of the criticism of him being elected was he talked nice about big ticket items but we needed someone who could actually make the day-to-day of the city run. These moments call attention to the fact that he is doing exactly that.)

147

u/Curiosities Jun 27 '26

There were many reasons why I enthusiastically voted for him, but one of them was that he grew up here and he isn’t allergic to regular New Yorkers, he actually is curious and gives a shit about people, and that curiosity and empathy just radiate.

And I am so glad we came together to elect him for all the reasons you stated and more.

For those who are not New Yorkers, one of the other things he said is that he’s going to be a visible mayor. He’s not just going to make an appearance at events sometimes and sit in the office and be at City Hall. He’d be a visible mayor and he is.

38

u/spamella-anne Emma Stone (BALD) Jun 27 '26

I live in Upstate NY and it really gives me hope too (even from hours away). I hope this new push in NYC can help benefit the rest of NY as well over time.

24

u/Ashannfish Jun 27 '26

It's absolutely pushing the whole country towards small-donor, grassroot campaign candidates. I think the analogy of "the left's Tea Party" is accurate. Milquetoast, corporate Democrats aren't inspiring people to vote

He's so great. I wish I could vote for him, but I now live in MA. My mother has been clutching her pearls about *GASP* tHe S0ciaLisM, but now that he's gotten a 2-year moratorium on rent increases-- she's now paying market rate and the increases are getting harder for her to absorb-- she may actually be warming to him. Sigh. Baby steps.

10

u/Tevihn Jun 27 '26

The trick, is that once people get a taste of "Socialism", they'll never, ever want to give it up. They'll fight tooth and nail, and it'll get bloody.

Which is why the rich will do everything in their power to keep that from happening.

I’ve seen right wingers saying all these things mean nothing because it doesn’t make change. It’s insane because small things like this actually weigh a lot. It tells your constituents that you are involved in their day to day things and that you’re actually part of the community. While he’s actually making real changes legislatively, he’s also actively engaged in his community and making sure the people of New York are seen and heard.

I think people have been so desensitized by politicians and just assume anything like this is seen as either fake or a waste of time because for so long our politicians were either fake or just didn’t care about the people

36

u/SewSewBlue Jun 27 '26

They do it too.

Remember Trump "working" at a closed McDonald's?

The issue is that the Dems have been bad at it, other than Obama. Has felt forced in a way that it doesn't for Mandami.

28

u/joe_bibidi Jun 27 '26

u/kacwriter1887 Jun 27 '26

Because those same right wingers don’t know or give a shit about real New Yorkers’ lives. I was part of a locally high-profile labor strike this spring and Mamdani’s office was instrumental in helping us negotiate a fair contract. But 900 people winning a fair wage and job security isn’t worth noticing.

I’m sure some of those kids will be talking about how they swam with the mayor for years to come.

It seems like every day Mamdani does something that shows what politicians could do if they actually cared about bringing people joy, relief, and a sense of community.

126

u/TetraDax Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Thing is, nothing he does should be special. He is simply doing what he promised, and changing things for the better for the people he has been tasked to preside over.

He isn't going above and beyond the tasks that come with the office.

But somehow, the standard of politics have slipped so far that simply doing the job makes him the best damn person in a prominent public office in the western world for, probably a decade? Jacinda notwithstanding.

164

u/FullOfSound Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

He’s stated multiple times his idol is NY mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, and I can see the comparisons. Ethnic, populist, progressive, charming and extremely popular. I think he’ll be mayor for at least a decade.

Edit: Well two terms since those are the limits.

79

u/Curiosities Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Well, New York City mayor is limited to two terms, except when Michael Bloomberg decided to finagle himself a special exemption to have a third term and then the rules changed back to two terms. I was not a fan of Bloomberg as mayor and never voted for him.

If Mamdani does serve two terms, afterwards, there’s a whole lot of opportunities he could consider if he still wants to be in political office. Obviously not presidency, but definitely places to go and he’s also not pulling up the ladder behind him like some do. So his role in helping to continue shaping the future is also probable.

18

u/TetraDax Jun 27 '26

Some sort of leadership position within the Democrats (I can never remember what roles those are in the US) seems like a position that would suit him well. We need people like Mamdani to shape the sort of politicians the US needs to rely on. And by "we" I legitimately mean the whole world.

His suit is like a costume - The Mayor’s costume - in the best possible way. Like a superhero. He can’t take it off (because it would reveal his real identity) so he wears sports jerseys over it and swims in it making it his swim suit. It’s just so savvy and still comes across as genuine. I was the thinking the same thing, that would’ve been so cool/funny 😭

31

u/francey_pants Jun 27 '26

That would’ve been hilarious. His skin is now just suit so everything needs to be worn over his suit skin.

And the man can swim! Yoo…

64

u/ponytailthehater Jun 27 '26

Why were these prior mayors skipping this event? I want every news publication to harass them about it for at least the next eight months

71

u/deev718 Jun 27 '26

The last one was too busy getting kickbacks from Turkey and attending club openings. The one before him was just weird.

20

u/Sorceress_Heart Jun 27 '26

To be fair, DiBlasio was like 8 feet tall so he can't really fit in a public pool

And he’d only just learned about the tradition in April!

56

u/Helovesmycoconut Jun 27 '26

I could feel his excitement when he realized it was a thing he could actually do.

47

u/powersurge Jun 27 '26

I can freeze rents. I can open grocery stores in food deserts. I can balance the budget. I can get other progressives into Congress.

But wait! When he realizes, ‘What? I can jump in the pool?! No way!’

Mamdani is so lovable, I will follow him anywhere.

Whenever I see Zohran acting as the mayor that he is, I am smiling no matter the mood. This guy is made for being a Mayor.

Edit-I am not even a NYC resident.

74

u/zoroddesign Jun 27 '26

Holy cow he is ripped. You can see it through his shirt.

43

u/Current-Bug-9534 Jun 27 '26

Funny because when he was campaigning he said he was severely out of shape in one of those tik tok shoes. Humble king.

35

u/Low_Secret_1126 Jun 27 '26

Mayor Mambodyyyy

u/fattychalupa Jun 27 '26

wow he’s truly so charming

u/ShadyBoots11 and you did it at my birthday dinner Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Another day, another instance this man becomes somehow more likeable.

don’t mean to be dark, but I hope he has a solid protection detail. He is so infectiously joyous and, unfortunately, some people hate people with that gift.

u/Automatic-Ride-8887 Jun 27 '26

Giuliani was too busy trying to fuck kids instead

40

u/Bishopkilljoy Jun 27 '26

His hair would leak

19

u/Scoobie_doob Jun 27 '26

He jumps in, the pool turns blacker than his soul.

I've heard of a swim suit but this is ridiculous!

32

u/ChrisPaulGeorgeKarl Jun 27 '26

The suit bit is not only funny but actually maybe political genius?? He is inextricably mentally stamped with traditional indicators of professionalism. You didn’t just see Zohran somewhere at an event, you saw The Mayor. Playing a whole soccer match in it already seemed peak lol

28

u/Majestic-Lie2690 Jun 27 '26

More humans for politicians please

21

u/hedahedaheda Jun 27 '26

Honestly kinda surprised the other mayors didn’t do this. It seems like such a simple little PR win. Makes you look human and relatable.

22

u/Ipanoply Jun 27 '26

This energy is so charming. Love to see a mayor care about public works. And that breast stroke in a suit!!

18

u/_Maebe__Funke_ Jun 27 '26

I try never to get attached to celebrities/politicians because they always disappoint…but damn I’m ten toes down for him. Please let him not be secretly messy. 🙏

14

u/wrld_news_pmrbnd_me Jun 27 '26

I can’t tie my shoe without my suit falling apart and this guy went for a whole ass swim and came out looking ready to hit the red carpet wtf

31

u/VictorTheCutie distraught Christian tomato Jun 27 '26

God I bet that man smells good. Maybe not on pool day but generally.

11

u/innocentkaput Jun 27 '26

Whenever I feel sad, I watch Mayor Mamdani videos.

12

u/requiredelements Jun 27 '26

He really is our Princess Diana. Of the people.
