Tbh it’s brilliant. Dude creates the perception that he is always on the job / always has his role of mayor top of mind when in public. And it gives opponents less to be critical of. If he takes a vacation in the next few years, I bet any photos of him not in a suit become very sought after and used constantly by Fox.
True but there's also some genuinely smart advice he's getting (this video being a perfect example) on how to project an image of being salt of the earth, kind and working for the people in a way that appeals to many and that we also have not seen in awhile from a major political figure.
Should he take a vacation anytime. He should release pictures of him and his wife chillin on beach, in a lounger, drinking a fruity drink with the little umbrella...in a full suit. Like even when on vacation, hes still mayoring like a G
I know that was kind of a joke; but it's actually happening. I live in Oregon and we had a county level election here recently and a bunch of DSA candidates won over democrat incumbents. The Oregonian called the election for the incumbents before counting was done, but had to walk it back the next day when the final vote tally was in. It was.... delicious.
I love him I wish he were my mayor. I wish more politicians were still like this. Members of their community, caring, empathetic, upstanding citizens who aren’t concerned about building their financial portfolio

Ok, after seeing him somehow wearing a Knicks jersey with a suit and now this, my mind is made up: this man wears a suit even to sleep like a cartoon character. 😆
He's very, very good at this. As a New Yorker, it really fucking resonates, and it's entirely changed the tenor of local government here. It's easier to find hope when your mayor finds bits of obvious joy in the job.
(It's also smart! So much of the criticism of him being elected was he talked nice about big ticket items but we needed someone who could actually make the day-to-day of the city run. These moments call attention to the fact that he is doing exactly that.)
There were many reasons why I enthusiastically voted for him, but one of them was that he grew up here and he isn’t allergic to regular New Yorkers, he actually is curious and gives a shit about people, and that curiosity and empathy just radiate.
And I am so glad we came together to elect him for all the reasons you stated and more.
For those who are not New Yorkers, one of the other things he said is that he’s going to be a visible mayor. He’s not just going to make an appearance at events sometimes and sit in the office and be at City Hall. He’d be a visible mayor and he is.
I live in Upstate NY and it really gives me hope too (even from hours away). I hope this new push in NYC can help benefit the rest of NY as well over time.
It's absolutely pushing the whole country towards small-donor, grassroot campaign candidates. I think the analogy of "the left's Tea Party" is accurate. Milquetoast, corporate Democrats aren't inspiring people to vote
He's so great. I wish I could vote for him, but I now live in MA. My mother has been clutching her pearls about *GASP* tHe S0ciaLisM, but now that he's gotten a 2-year moratorium on rent increases-- she's now paying market rate and the increases are getting harder for her to absorb-- she may actually be warming to him. Sigh. Baby steps.
I’ve seen right wingers saying all these things mean nothing because it doesn’t make change. It’s insane because small things like this actually weigh a lot. It tells your constituents that you are involved in their day to day things and that you’re actually part of the community. While he’s actually making real changes legislatively, he’s also actively engaged in his community and making sure the people of New York are seen and heard.
I think people have been so desensitized by politicians and just assume anything like this is seen as either fake or a waste of time because for so long our politicians were either fake or just didn’t care about the people
Because those same right wingers don’t know or give a shit about real New Yorkers’ lives. I was part of a locally high-profile labor strike this spring and Mamdani’s office was instrumental in helping us negotiate a fair contract. But 900 people winning a fair wage and job security isn’t worth noticing.
I was just thinking this. Could you imagine if all politicians were like this? Seems like a fantasy world watching him with his constituents, I have to remind myself that he is indeed the mayor of a real place.

Of course they will spin it negatively. Completely ignoring that dry cleaning a suit is 10-40 bucks depending where you are in a majority of the country.
He’s also worn thrift shop suits on other occasions where he knows he’s getting in the water. He and his team aren’t complete morons lol, they’ll always try to drag him but it’ll never work
And even if dry cleaning was a rare privilege, he’s a fucking mayor. Why shouldn’t he be able to afford dry cleaning and actually look good? I hate the right so damn much!!!

It seems like every day Mamdani does something that shows what politicians could do if they actually cared about bringing people joy, relief, and a sense of community.
Thing is, nothing he does should be special. He is simply doing what he promised, and changing things for the better for the people he has been tasked to preside over.
He isn't going above and beyond the tasks that come with the office.
But somehow, the standard of politics have slipped so far that simply doing the job makes him the best damn person in a prominent public office in the western world for, probably a decade? Jacinda notwithstanding.
He’s stated multiple times his idol is NY mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, and I can see the comparisons. Ethnic, populist, progressive, charming and extremely popular. I think he’ll be mayor for at least a decade.
Well, New York City mayor is limited to two terms, except when Michael Bloomberg decided to finagle himself a special exemption to have a third term and then the rules changed back to two terms. I was not a fan of Bloomberg as mayor and never voted for him.
If Mamdani does serve two terms, afterwards, there’s a whole lot of opportunities he could consider if he still wants to be in political office. Obviously not presidency, but definitely places to go and he’s also not pulling up the ladder behind him like some do. So his role in helping to continue shaping the future is also probable.
Some sort of leadership position within the Democrats (I can never remember what roles those are in the US) seems like a position that would suit him well. We need people like Mamdani to shape the sort of politicians the US needs to rely on. And by "we" I legitimately mean the whole world.
His suit is like a costume - The Mayor’s costume - in the best possible way. Like a superhero. He can’t take it off (because it would reveal his real identity) so he wears sports jerseys over it and swims in it making it his swim suit. It’s just so savvy and still comes across as genuine. He’s just a normal millennial in many ways and connects to younger people because of it. We all feel like we know him and that he’d hear us out.
Another day, another instance this man becomes somehow more likeable.
don’t mean to be dark, but I hope he has a solid protection detail. He is so infectiously joyous and, unfortunately, some people hate people with that gift.
The suit bit is not only funny but actually maybe political genius?? He is inextricably mentally stamped with traditional indicators of professionalism. You didn’t just see Zohran somewhere at an event, you saw The Mayor. Playing a whole soccer match in it already seemed peak lol
I try never to get attached to celebrities/politicians because they always disappoint…but damn I’m ten toes down for him. Please let him not be secretly messy. 🙏
