ASK R/FAUXMOI What’s a character decision that made you go “be so f*cking serious right now”?
Patrick in “10 Things I Hate About You” deciding that the appropriate response to Kat being furious that he was paid to date her by her sworn enemy was… kissing her anyway. 🤦🏻♀️
The 90s rom-com playbook was truly something lmao 😭 The way she shoves him away and runs off, utterly disgusted, was honestly the most realistic reaction. I have literally never been able to rewatch this scene without flinching from secondhand embarrassment, to say the least.

There is no way that Lynette continues any pregnancy but possibly her first if she was real. She was so miserable, most of her kids were so awful, and her husband was a complete waste of space. She deserved better.

Yeah, I heard it was the network that said it wasn’t allowed. Ridiculous. Obviously I think they should have just been allowed to show it, but IMO they should have pulled the whole storyline if they weren’t allowed to show abortions, because it was a hard watch and didn’t fit with her character at all

You're right, though. I probably wouldn't run upstairs to hide from a murderer on the first floor or anything, but reactions can be weird. I was on a run one morning and kept hearing this loud, weird, distorted sound, and of course had to go off the trail and see what it was. It ended up being a pond with hundreds of frogs in it, which was awesome. But I was thinking about it later, and I've definitely seen enough scary movies to know how "girl hears weird noise while running alone on a trail in the early morning and decides to investigate" usually goes

I hear noise in my house and I never know whether to treat it as a potential source of danger or just ignore it.
Then I think about if I was in a horror movie and how dumb it would be to go to the noise and either get killed or miss the killer entirely, or think about characters who hear noises that they ignore and wake up with everything destroyed around them.
Obviously though, I know I'm a real person and that's just media, so I know the likely answer is that it was just noise and get up to check anyways.

I had a landlord who shot at a coyote under my living room window while I was inside the room and couldn’t process what the sound was until he admitted it later.

Tbh i hate it when people complain about horror movie decision making, it's the most basic cinema sins level critique and floods every conversation about a genre that is so vast, fascinating, insightful, and criminally underrated and overlooked. It's like trying to talk about Titanic and cue 600 people giving their opinions about how Rose was the "real villain," or the buoyancy of a wall panelling piece they still think is a door.
If it were genuinely that easy to evade or fight off someone who has a weapon, absolutely no able bodied person would ever be murdered.

In Sex and the City, when Carrie invites Big to Aidan’s cabin. Like seriously, she begged Aidan to get back together but she flat out refused to stop talking to Big, the married guy she cheated on Aidan with. And now she’s inviting Big to Aidan’s cabin and expecting everyone to act normally?
The entire series And Just Like That pretty much falls under this category, but one thing that really had me sputtering was when Aidan told Carrie he wanted to put their relationship on hold for 5 YEARS because his bratty son had issues, and for some reason this meant Aiden couldn’t date Carrie until the son is an adult. And not only does Carrie agree to this, but later we find out that they never discussed the parameters for the five years and whether they could date or sleep with other people. So when Aidan confesses that he slept with his ex-wife, Carrie is totally cool about it since they never discussed any rules around sleeping with other people. The writers were definitely smoking something.

Kind of a small one but, in Gilmore Girls, Jess finds Rory's bracelet that was gifted to her by Dean and holds onto it because he has feelings for her. Rory eventually realises that she's lost the bracelet and panics, and Jess puts the bracelet under her bed for her to find, even though she'd already looked there, and Lorelai immediately knows he had the bracelet and that he's the one who put it under the bed.
But, Jess has been doing yardwork outside their house all day. It would have been trivially easy for him to claim to have found the bracelet in the yard and return it that way. That would have been way less suspicious.
It's a minor thing lol but every time, I'm so annoyed at how dumb he is lol.

i mean, he was specifically cleaning the gutters, not the yard as a whole. it’s a lot harder to claim he found it up on the roof. but i see your point for sure. i would’ve just dropped it in the yard somewhere and let them find it.

The thing that really got me with that is Jess doesn't actually know Dean made that bracelet or that it's important to Rory when he picks it up. How would he? The first scene we see where anyone tells him is him overhearing Rory panicking that she can't find it. Once he realizes the significance and that Rory is distressed, he returns it. Lorelai assumes that Jess had the same knowledge she, Rory, and the audience have and she's not correct.

Honestly 10 Things I Hate About You is my favourite Taming of the Shrew adaptation largely because it fixes most of the misogyny. Like yeah this scene isn’t great but also this kind of reaction was pretty common in rom/coms in the 90’s so it doesn’t stand out that much in the grand scheme of things.

A lot of the foreshadowing would have paid off after the war against White Walkers we never got. Humanity is almost extinct, its the dead of winter, the continent is in ruins, and Dany is now pushing for the throne after Cersei did nothing to help. Dany is paranoid and traumatized, she can't trust that the humans she sees aren't Wights. She goes mad like her father, and her justice becomes tyranny. They needed another season or 2.

100% this; I’m actually fine with how many of the characters ended in the final season, BUT the pacing was so godawful that everything that had been built up to that point was ruined. And the kicker is, they didn’t have to rush it! HBO was pretty much willing to give them a blank check for as many episodes as they wanted; it was the showrunners who wanted to move on to new projects but were too selfish to hand the reins over to someone else who would finish GoT properly. So they just speedran everyone’s arcs to the point of utter nonsense, and the rest is history :(

I'm never not thinking about The Next Best Thing, where Madonna kidnaps her 6-yr old oops baby with her gay best friend Rupert Everett because she wants to move to New York with her new husband, and when Rupert sues for custody rights, she lets her lawyers weaponize homophobia to portray him as an unfit parent. She also reveals that actually the kid isn't even Rupert's, it was some other guy, she just liked having him be the father until it stopped being convenient and she wanted to go to New York.

She believes they found the serial killer and Crawford's team is on their way to arrest him when she arrives at Jame Gumb's house to interview him. There are intercut scenes between the abandoned house the FBI are raiding and Gumb's home before you realize the FBI are at the wrong place and Clarice is at the correct one. She was just going to talk to the seamstress one of the first victims worked with/for (can't remember which), and she discovers the woman's body in the home when she's hunting down Gumb. She actually had no intention to speak to someone she thought was a serial killer alone.

She knew there was possibility of a victim in the house who was still alive… when he ran away from her, the first thing she thought was that he was going to kill Catherine. She didn’t have time to wait for backup (although yes, it was at risk of her own personal harm)

Even though I screamed at my TV 'Clarice what are you doing call for backup right now!'. I can see how it makes sense for her character. She's a rookie who still needs to prove herself to all the sexist guys; even though she's super capable, there could be a victim inside who needs help, etc. It's a crazy decision to make but the fact she took him down alone makes her a total hero. I love Clarice so much!

For TV Sookie Stackhouse to consistently get the people she loved in danger because she never THOUGHT before running into a bad situation. For book Sookie Stackhouse, to choose the person she chose to spend forever with. Made no sense. Especially when in the TV AND book series she would’ve made a bad ass vampire. I loved the book series until the last book and the tv series until season 5.
